To keep some kind of chronology from THIS point - you'd want to see Quantum Of Solace and then go back to Dr. No. and work through to Die Another Day then, do Skyfall. Otherwise, it won't make sense or carry the same weight.

@@DreadnoughtMetal2006 That seems like how it should work, but Craig’s Bond is clearly in a different timeline than the Connery Bond, maybe certain missions have played out the same, but many of the events in the official Ian Fleming adapted stories didn’t happen to Craig even though his run stated out with the first official adaptation of the character. I’d say you could start with Brosnan’s run since Judy Dench’s M only makes sense if she’s been the only M Bond has ever known.

That was actually a mongoose battling the snake at the beginning of the movie. They hunt and kill cobras. They are fierce agile fighters, and they have a mutated cell that blocks the snake's neurotoxins from entering their bloodstream. Apparently in the majority of their fights the mongoose kills the cobra.

Even the title song text and raw melody makes so much sense: If you take a life do you know what you'll give? Odds are you won't like what it is When the storm arrives would you be seen with me By the merciless eyes of deceit? I've seen angels fall from blinding heights But you yourself are nothing so divine Just next in line Arm yourself because no one else here will save you The odds will betray you And I will replace you You can't deny the prize it may never fulfill you It longs to kill you, are you willing to die? The coldest blood runs through my veins You know my name If you come inside things will not be the same When you return to the night And if you think you've won you never saw me change The game that we've all been playing I've seen this diamond cut through harder men Than you yourself but if you must pretend You may meet your end Arm yourself because no one else here will save you The odds will betray you And I will replace you You can't deny the prize it may never fulfill you It longs to kill you, are you willing to die? The coldest blood runs through my veins Try to hide your hand Forget how to feel (forget how to feel) Life is gone with just a spin of the wheel (spin of the wheel) Arm yourself because no one else here will save you The odds will betray you And I will replace you You can't deny the prize it may never fulfill you It longs to kill you, are you willing to die? Vesper’s dialogue in the dinner scene after Bond wins is fascinating. She says, "You've got a choice, you know. Just because you've done something, it doesn't mean that you have to keep doing it." On the surface, she's talking about Bond being an agent and killing people, but the subtext for her is she's talking about betraying her government and by extension, Bond. She's already in love with him, and she's having to deal with the realities of her situation. It was easy for her to betray her government when it was just a faceless institution, but it's much more difficult for her now that she deeply cares about someone personally victimized by her betrayal. By saying that Bond still has a choice in what he does, she is also saying that she can choose to stop being a traitor. But she can't quite convince herself, which is why she's so adamant that Bond can change; it's not really about whether Bond can change, it's about whether she can. Bond returns with a quip about people who can't take advice being the ones who always give it. This startles Vesper because, like the scene on the train, he can see through her. He can't see completely through her; he doesn't know what she's struggling with, but he can see that she's driven by something. Vesper is so rattled by Bond's insight that she's put on the defensive and answers his question with a question of her own, sidestepping the issue. Bond brings the issue back to the forefront by revealing how much he's able to see through her, and saying that he'll never know what's driving her. This is a perfect opportunity for Vesper to come clean and tell him everything, but the opportunity is lost. She gets a text, Bond realizes that Mathis is a traitor, Vesper is kidnapped, then Bond is kidnapped, and then she is forced to make a deal to save Bond's life by giving up the money Bond won in the tournament. After that, it's too late for her. She can't tell him her situation because the people she was working with would kill Bond. So they continue to fall in love, but she knows the relationship is doomed. Her only hope is to die and pay for her sins against Bond. She knows he'll hate her forever, but his hatred is worth it if it keeps him alive. She loves him more than she values her own life.

Casino Royale was the first Bond novel by Ian Fleming published so in a way you are at the start of the series despite all the other Bond films before, which never followed the order of the novels being published nor always follow their storylines , but this film does follow the novel's essential story pretty closely in regards to the main characters, but with a lot of added action scenes to give some kinetic energy.

Hi Coby, UK viewer here. I’ve watched a few of your other film reactions but when I saw this come up, I instantly subscribed to your channel. I am a massive Bond fan and have been since my dad took me, at the age of 7, to see my first Bond film, Diamonds are Forever, on its first release in 1971, and I’ve been hooked ever since! In the 1940s, Ian Fleming once told a friend that one day he would write “a spy novel to end all spy novels.” And he wasn’t wrong. Whilst not the best Bond book (IMO) Casino Royale sets the tone of James Bond and his world and the next 12 novels just adds to that, with fabulous villains, beautiful girls and exotic locations. The films took the books to a higher level, injecting humour, puns, gadgets, size and grandeur (courtesy of production designer Ken Adam’s wonderful set designs) and not forgetting the fantastic contribution made by British film composer John Barry, who took Monty Norman’s low key James Bond theme, added guitars and brass and came up with a thunderous theme that almost everyone (whether they’ve seen a Bond film or not) can instantly hum when asked to. For all of the production talent working behind the scenes that made Dr. No the big smash it was in 1962, the lightning in a bottle moment that cemented the success of that film and the ones that followed, happened when the producers took a chance on a 31 year old Scottish actor, Sean Connery, to play James Bond. Fleming wasn’t initially impressed by his casting, having already envisioned someone like David Niven in the part, but he changed his mind after seeing Connery’s portrayal of his hero up on the big screen. Connery simply oozed charm, charisma and sexuality in the role, and set the template for the other 5 actors that followed him (all of whom had various levels of success or failure in the role.) As much as everyone goes on about Daniel Craig being the best Bond ever, I totally disagree. No one IMO will ever match Connery’s portrayal of Bond (though I think Timothy Dalton came close.) The first four Bond films, Dr. No., From Russia with Love, Goldfinger and Thunderball (and the sixth film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service) stick very close to the Fleming novels. Of the rest, some of the films take certain things from that particular book being filmed and use them, whilst others (particularly the Pierce Brosnan films) are pretty much all new stories, with perhaps a passing nod here and there to a character or incident in a Fleming novel. I really think you’re gonna have a blast seeing all of them though. Can’t wait for your reactions and comments.

great reaction. Craig’s Bond is a reboot, and Casino Royale was the first novel, but, for complicated reasons, the filmmakers didn’t have rights to that book when they started the film series back in the early 1960s with the movie Dr. No, starring the original Bond, Sean Connery. the Craig series is essentially a self contained universe and appears not directly connected to the rest of the Bond Film series (Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, and Pierce Brosnan)

Fun fact for gambling aficionados: This is the first Bond film where Texas Hold'em was the game of choice, replacing Baccarat. And on that note, I always found it ironic that the most popular poker game of the time was named for a state which has no legalized casino gambling.

One of the hallmarks of a James Bond film is they often feature the current trends of the time in which they are made. When this film was made, The Bodies presentation Bond finds himself in when he goes to Miami was a popular travelling exhibit. Texas Hold'em poker was all the rage at the time, so they featured that throughout the story. In Ian Fleming's book, they played Baccarat.

If you read the Fleming novels you'll know that Bond's first ever love interest was Vesper Lynd, but she winds up dead only to save his life. Bond finds love again on another mission. Her name is Teresa di Vicenzo. They get married (watch On Her Majesty's Secret Service), but is killed by Blofeld's henchwoman Irma Bunt on the way to their honeymoon. Bond never marries after that, and his womanizing then becomes an emotional coping mechanism. He sleeps with women without getting emotionally attached to them. He hasn't forgotten Teresa, and he only ever loves her, still. Casio Royal was the first novel Ian Fleming wrote in the Bond series. In modernizing the plot, I think they ended up with a slightly weak script. Nice reaction. Subbed.

41:11 true to the novel though. And in that, the assassin actually did mark Bond by carving the Cyrillic letter Ш (š) into his hand for шпио́н (špión) meaning spy. It got surgically removed though. Obviously since it’s no longer the Cold War in 2006 and Mr. White isn’t Russian, they just cut that bit out in the adaptation.

What makes this work is that unlike the majority of Bond films, even the Craig films, the plot beat for beat is basically pulled from the Ian Fleming novel. Obviously, there are the modern set pieces, but the plot 90% from the book, including much of the dialogue. There's only one other 007 film where Bond falls in love with the girl. On Her Majesty's Secret Service. If you like 60s nostalgia and a great love story, that's definitely one to watch. Chronologically, it takes place after the events in Casino Royale. Casino was the first Bond novel. It gets a lot of criticism from 80s and 90s Bond fans who don't like how gritty it is and the fact that Bond isn't constantly making quips (or that Bond doesn't have dark hair - weird), but he doesn't do that in the novels. The quips are definitely a movie thing. I'm a big fan of the books because you get a sense of who he is as a person (alcoholic, drug addict, self-important womanizing orphan). The films generally don't do that. They're just straight up action comedies for the most part. My favourites are the spy thrillers like this one, From Russia With Love, The Living Daylights, and On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

I am a bit late but: Bond intending to leave MI6 wasn't a fake out. He fully intended to quit to be with Vesper, and if she had lived at all, he would have, so for him to come bak, she had to die (and stay dead). Also Casino Royale was the first James Bond book that was originally written so it kind of was a bit a stand-alone at the time. Regardless, glad you enjoyed it and were surprised at the twists! Remember that Casino Royale was the first Bond novel. Somewhat different from the film, since it was set in the Cold War era, but closer than with most other Bond films. There was a 1967 film version with the original Bond, David Niven, but it bore little resemblance to the novel. The root threads of the Bond universe lie in the preparation of the novel. Ian Fleming's secretary who typed his manuscript became Miss Moneypenny. "M" was modeled on Fldiming's wartime intelligence commander who had much the same rough personality as "M", the classic male MI6 head. Fleming began writing the novel in 1952 on his Jamaica estate. The estate's name - Goldeneye, which was never a novel.

From Sean Connery to Pierce Brosnan, the Bond films just go from one actor to another, but with the Daniel Craig era, they "rebooted" Bond by having him just get the "00" status. Judi Dench started as "M" when Brosnan took over the role, with her being the new boss and Bond the seasoned agent. Now with this, she's been around and Daniel's Bond is sort of the "new" guy.

Interesting tidbit. This is one of the very few James Bond films to actually be based on the original novel of the same name. The original author wrote 21 stories for the James Bond character. Only 8 have been adapted to film: Dr No. From Russia with Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, On her Majesty’s Secret Service, The Living Daylights, and Casino Royale. Most take the name and name of someone characters but none of the plot.

There was an episode of The West Wing when the President (Martin Sheen) is having a conversation with some of his staff and he starts talking about martinis. He says they should always be stirred, never shaken. If you shake a martini with ice, the ice chips and melts faster which dilutes the drink. "Bond was ordering a weak-ass drink and being snooty about it."

This is my favorite Bond film because of how gritty it is. Up until this point Bond films have been very pretty and tame like a fashion show almost. But this brought the believe ability of being a spy and at same time have some major style points. Wasn't as big of fan of later movies because they felt more like Mission Impossible over top action rather than a Bond film.

As with the first chase scene, Bond movies usually start with an epic opening scene! The guy who invented the theme song, and played it on his one of a kind guitar, and was a very famous guitarist who taught guys like Jimmy Page, a few years back, sold his guitar, for untilds amount of money, on Pawnstars!

Casino Royale is the first James Bond novel. Doctor No was the first Bond movie and the year Dr. No came out there was a spoof on spy thriller movies called Casino Royale starring Peter Sellers. So the true origin story of James Bond 007 has never been made into a movie until this one.

Casino Royale was the perfect Bond movie. It's probably my favorite of the films Daniel Craig did besides Skyfall, which was also perfect, lol. But he was great in all of them. Casino Royale will always hold a special place because it's the beginning and origin story. Eva Green was just magic in this film. Her chemistry with Daniel Craig was off the charts. It was the perfect casting choice to get her. She is easily my most favorite Bond girl of every Bond film and I've seen them all. It's hard to believe this movie is already 18 years old as it was released in 2006.

LeChiffre doesn't use an inhaler for asthma; it's a benzedrine inhaler. Benzedrine is an amphetamine that was widely available OTC and (ab)used recreationally until it was made a prescription drug in 1959. Taken from the novel, LeChiffre is a benzedrine addict and his public use of the substance is meant to give the character a slimy feel as by the 1950s, when the novel was written and originally set, public use of benzedrine was akin to chewing tobacco today, namely seen as crude and disgusting.

The movie didn't handle the "Mathis!" moment the best compared to the original novel. The reason Bond got suspicious and ran outside was because he realized there was no reason for Mathis to want Vesper to come outside to talk, when he could just come inside and talk to them directly. That, combined with how Bond hadn't seen Mathis since the game ended, made him realize someone else sent the text for Vesper to come outside.

Great reaction Coby, i was waiting for this reaction for so long. Love this one Daniel Craig is the best Bond since the late, great Sean Connery. You are gonna love this James Bond movies they are all tied together, and that chase in the beginning with that guy that do Parkour, well that guy is Sébastien Foucan the founder of freerunning one of styles of Parkour. And a fun-fact, the Aston Martin (Car) flip actually set a world record for flips in a single stunt. A number of world records for stunts were set during this glorious evolution of Bond. I watched a making of documentary for this stunt and they really struggled getting the Aston to flip they kept trying bigger and bigger ramps but the car was just too stable and kept landing on it's wheels, so they had to use an air ram mounted under the car something they really didn't want to do because if you look closely you can see it. Keep up the amazing work, cant wait for the next one. The chair-rope torture scene is from the original James Bond book, Casino Royale by Ian Fleming. If you read the book Casino Royale, he gets even more beat up than he does here. Like Bond loses pretty much every fight, and the times he does win he has to publicly embarrass himself to not die. That's why Bond in the books is always improving himself. keep up the good work.

And the characters , same thru old series, but brought in in a new light..I'm rambling but looking forward to watching your journey! ❤

Daniel Craig was a member of my gym, waaaaaay before anybody knew him. He's only about 6 months older than me, so I'd estimate he was probably only about 20, 21 or 22 at the time. I was a boxer in my younger days and went to this weight training gym once a week. It was a hardcore gym with dilapidated brickwork and damp. It had a boxing room, and it was there that I spoke to Daniel on a couple of occasions. He asked me to show him how to throw some punch combinations, and that was it really. I thought he was a nice guy of few words.

With Bond going back to the 60s, it's not u worry about if he dies, but how he gets out of it! I suppose I favor Sean Connery, but Daniel is good, so was Pierce, and I wish George had done more than one. He had a real boyhood charm!

Casino Royale was first filmed as a 1950s b&w episode of a CBS TV series 'Climax' with Barry Nelson as Bond and Peter Lorre as LeChiffre. Fleming hated it and would not sell the rights to his other 007 novels until he made the deal with Saltzman and Broccoli. You can actually find it on KZbin.

After watching The Bourne Identity , all the previous Bond Films looked like cartoons. I thought no Bond movie can match the slick story telling and action of Bourne Identity. Then comes Casino Royale , A full Bond Re-Boot , With Daniel Craig as the New Bond, and for the first time the action and the story telling made it look like James Bond is Vulnerable both Physically and Emotionally. A fantastic re-boot , that matched The Bourne identity. Subsequent Bond Movies haven’t matched my expectations to Casino Royale , some have loved Skyfall, I liked the last two ones better than Skyfall, but Cadino Royale remains my best Bond Movie to Date.
