After practicing law in a Latin American Country for 10 years I can really tell you that there is certain point in your career in wich doesnt matter the university you went, your capacity, abilities, knowledge, networking, skills and other elements will be more important. Obviously at the beginning can be very usefull to have a diploma from a top university but I will recommend more to keep studing, focus on the field of law you like, do a lot of networking and dont loose your focus on your goals. I went to a british university to study a Master in a very good University and lots of my classmates came from top british universities and I can tell you It didnt impress me their knowledge or ther abilities at the end is about SELF WORK.
@turlstreet
@turlstreet Жыл бұрын
International students frequently under-rate the UK's top universities because they study master's degrees there. It's important to understand that master's degrees are something of an after-thought in the UK's higher education sector, regarded by universities as of only tertiary importance after bachelor's degrees and doctorates. This results in significantly reduced time with professors (something international master's students often complain about, quite rightly), as well as fewer available resources. A master's degree at Oxbridge (for instance) is also not as difficult to get into as a Bachelor's degree at Oxbridge, and postgrad students don't receive the famous 1-1 tutorials that undergraduates do. Because of all of these differences, UK companies don't regard them as adding much value -- Magic Circle law firms explicitly treat an undergrad Oxbridge 2.1 the same as a postgrad Oxbridge distinction, or a first-class BA from any other 2nd-rung university like Edinburgh or Imperial. The final issue is difficulty, with a master's in law typically requiring only 60-75% as many modules per year as a bachelor's, with greater choice, as well as a more lenient grading system (this is born out by my own experience on the examinations board of my department at Cambridge) and all my classmates who like me studied both their bachelor's and master's at Oxbridge achieved a full grade boundary higher in our master's/LLM than on the BA (e.g., a first-class/distinction at master's if we had received a 2.1 for the BA, or a 2.1/Merit if a 2.2 at BA level). This is of course an unfortunate situation, and I have long argued that UK master's programmes deserve proper attention as degrees in their own right. A good start would be to have dedicated professors for these programmes, rather than just having professors from bachelor's and doctoral programmes being seconded for occasional lectures and seminars, as is currently the case.

@@turlstreet Hi. If you pay attention to what I wrote I never spoke bad about my university in the UK to the contrary I think UK universities are good and the professors were pretty good too. My comment was about my classmates which also study their undergrad in british univeristies. Im not saying they were bad estudents or not smart but I was not impress with their knowledge or skills even when some when to LSE, south hampton among others for their undergrad. Why Im trying to say is that in the long run the university you study is not as important as other things like your ability for networking, your negotiation skills, your capacity to study and solve complex cases. Therefore, I will advice any future lawyer to focus more on developing these skills more than graduating from the best universities in the world. Again, if you read my comment you can clearly see I never underrated the british universities.

Yale Law and now also Stanford Law are ranked above Harvard Law in the US. Your list seems mostly based on the total number of faculty members and the "brand name" among non-lawyers, not the selectivity, faculty/student ratio or other relevant factors related to these schools.

Makes zero difference. I went to one of these 3 and they are all great, all have national reputations that get you greta jobs, and for the rest of your life people will think you are smart -- even if you may not be. Also, after the intense competition at these schools, you're never afraid.

Yes because the USA's law degree is a Doctorate. You can become a tenured professor with it in USA and in most other countries it also allows you to become a law professor. I am from México and one of my friends has got a Mexican law degree (which is a bachelor like most sane countries, lol) and did his JD at Harvard. I dont get the impression that where you go to law school in México makes nearly as much of a difference as it does in the USA. Mexican law has many vices, but is nowhere near as credentialist as the USA's.

Not quite; Oxford's undergrad law course is a BA in Jurisprudence. Their postgrad is a BCL or an MJur, depending on whether you come from a Common Law background, or another legal tradition, respectively; both are 'taught' masters. The Graudate Diploma in Law, (the 'GDL', sometimes called the 'Law Conversion Course',) of which you speak is a course offered mostly by for-profit schools, is a year-long program, and allows those who didn't study law at undergrad to 'get up to speed' in a year. Hope this helps!

Well, they're most likely American so if Hollywood says it's the best, it IS the best. I'd had hoped the list would actually look at what would be beneficial internationally, like if you went for an EU position, a UN position or an international division of a major firm. Otherwise, a "world" list is meaningless since Harvard ain't gonna teach you shit about German law, French law, Ugandan law or whatever. Not only are the laws themselves vastly different (which is somewhat important for a lawyer) but even how the court itself works is completely different from place to place outside some bare bones common things.

If you think a legal education from the likes of Harvard, Yale, or Stanford is not globally and internationally oriented, you have another thing coming. Please don't assume anything out of spite.
@Zinras
@Zinras 5 жыл бұрын
No spite involved, the comment you made was just hilariously ignorant. Imagine the hubris required to assume that Harvard teaches you the full library of law in every country on the planet and that because it's the pinnacle of US-based law, it is thus also the pinnacle of world law. You know, as if US law applies outside the US. Just casually stating that no universities on the planet come even remotely close to any on this list. You'd think that maybe an Indian or Chinese university could sneak in, given their laws cover a billion+ people in each country and maybe they'd have a good lawyer or two, or maybe even a cheeky continental European one that specialises in EU law for the 500+ million people in the union there. Kind of the point of a *world* list. I'm sure it's pretty accurate as a general Anglosphere list, although I'd pity the fool who thinks going to Harvard grants them a free pass to English or Aussie courts.

I can explain Yale's ranking as the 4th. I agree with you that Yale is the best. I am sure you are American though, because most of the world's countries never hear about Yale as much as they hear about Harvard. This list reflects a world ranking of Law Schools and it takes into account reputation. Thus, ranking Yale as the 4th world-wide kind of makes sense.

Katteti Vikram LSAT establishes your interest in law and no one really knows what GRE score is needed for law school admissions. The LSAT however has its medians listed for each law school so you can gauge how well you need to do for acceptance.

Is it possible that I can still get into these schools if I went to a undergraduate university that is not highly ranked?
@CrimsonEducation

Absolutely! These schools take quite a few factors into account. Here you can set up a free consultation with one of our academic experts who can speak with you a bit more about all that: hubs.ly/H0bv7zn0

Katia Espinoza Mr Green is hundred percent right. No one gives a damn about the UG school except for Yale and maybe Stanford to a lower extent. Just get your GPA and LSAT numbers up and you’ll be good

Why does the comment section act like the US is the only country in the world. The UK universities rank so high because you can qualify as a lawyer anywhere in Europe after gaining your solicitors qualification. On top of this almost every single English speaking country is based on English law, studying English law allows you to easily do a common law LLM or Graduate degree and then study anywhere in the commonwealth.

Remember that there is a world outside the English-speaking world. Four (and a bit!) of the G7, for example, aren't English-speaking: Canada (Quebec), France, Germany, Italy, and Japan. If you want to practice there (or in any other non-English-speaking country), you'll generally need to go to law school locally. Lawyers in those countries tend to see an LLM from Harvard or somewhere as a nice-to-have to prove that you actually speak English (and will actually be able to advise your many English-speaking clients).

By what criteria? Law schools in Italy have taught generations who have developed Western Law. The French literally invented Continential law (with inspiration from the past). Netherlands leads in human rights/international law. University of Hong Kong is best in Asia, etc. I guess you also know that a US law degree with worthless in almost 200 countries, making any accredited law faculty in Russia better if you need to practice in the Russian Federation.
