These are my opinions only. I believe that Patrick Cripps was let off from his hit on Callum AhChee due to a technicality. I believe that the AFL will change the rules around the Match Review Officer, the AFL Tribunal and the AFL Appeals Board so that this never happens again. A player should not be let off from a technicality when it results in another player being concussed.
Timeline:

2:31 - Paddy Ryder vs Will Day
4:11 - James Rowbottom vs Zack Merrett

I don't like seeing a player get concussed, however you can't suspend players because they accidentally hit someone head high when you are going for the ball. Most times it is when their head hits the ground. As you can see Cripps had eyes for the ball and actually made contact with the ball. You can't expect a player to stop going for the ball in midair. At the tribunal they expected him to make a millisecond decision and they take 4 hours to come up with a decision. There are too many inconsistencies in the tribunal that they need to correct. I think it is great that Carlton beat the tribunal at this, and I hope other teams will follow until the AFL get this tribunal suspending the right players that are just going for the man.

I mean, Ah Chee ended up missing a handful of games due to concussion, so I don't know HOW Cripps didn't have his suspension stick, given the MRO are sticklers for punishing the outcome and not the act itself. Not only that, but Lachie Neale (in my opinion) was robbed of a few votes in big moments ... unfortunately, it comes across like the Brownlow is scripted, especially if you watch the Final Round in isolation as the votes are read out, and each player contending for the Brownlow are ruled out. Not a coincidence they were read out in that order.
@holdingthebull

Yea that's exactly right. They knew the results before they read them which they apparently "didn't know". Which is a load of you know what. They did it for the suspenseful finish. What a load.

I don't think there would be one single club that wouldn't contest this charge. It is in anyway Patrick Cripps fault that the AFL cannot take full responsibility for the overturning of the suspension. The big problem is that there is no fairness in that Match Review process. To prove the point, Ed Currnow gets two weeks for touching an umpire, Dustin Martin and Lochie Neil grab the umpires and guess what "Nothing to see here ". Marcus Bontepelli swings his arm knocking Ed Currnow out cold " Nothing to see here". Dustin Martin actually punches opposition in the throat and no action taken by the umpire's and players punched in the throat spend weeks out with the injuries caused. So if you can explain to all in sundry how this is happening, I for one would love to hear it. So instead of planting click bait do your due diligence and get to the heart of the problem not the easy out.

First thing I would say is that everything happens so fast. Slowing it down doesn't really help as it makes the decision time look slower. I think Mackey left the ground to contest the ball slightly. Probably should have gotten at least a week (I haven't googled this yet). I think any contact that is with the head, whether it's intentional or not, should be sent to the MRO for review. Your thoughts?
@el-violador

@@holdingthebull results off the top of my head we're 2 weeks but with an appeal the suspension was dropped. Clarke earned a broken jaw for his efforts and missed a fair bit of footy. My opinion is that it was right to go to tribunal and be dropped (though I could live with a week as setting an example). Mackay had eyes on the ball and importantly for my point his arms were outstretched. Mackay or Clarke were both at risk. Mackay just used a better technique (turning so that you're not leading with the head). There is also the point that the ball was legitimately in no man's land. The reason I like this as a comparison is that watching Cripps, it's almost the opposite on all counts of how I defend Mackay. His shoulder is tucked for impact and Ah Chee was between Cripps and the ball (meaning Cripps has to go through him to get the ball). If I was in Cripps's position I likely would do the same thing. To me it's a professional free kick gone wrong. He's trying to prevent a run on play by stopping a clean mark, allowing a chance to zone up and force high kick rather than a direct one. I can't stress enough that I don't think he wants hurt anyone. He just rolled the dice by playing the man. To me he should have lost and therefore missed 2 games (and missing those votes) making Neale the outright winner and not just default due to suspension
@holdingthebull
@holdingthebull Жыл бұрын
Yea I do tend to agree. I have seen some media say other players who have "won" the brownlow but missed out due to suspension. This doesn't fall under the same case as Cripps as he only won it in the last game where he realistically shouldn't have been playing in the first place.

Anyone who thinks Cripps deserved the Brownlow is not all there in the head. Not only should he be suspended for his dog act on Ah Chee but he also was no where near the best player of the 2022 AFL season. Not only do AFL rig the results of matches these days but they also rig the Brownlow. This has been happening since Gillon McLachlan took over as CEO and the reason he hasn't resigned yet is because he is trying to make sure the match fixing continues long after he is gone. The Brownlow can never be taken seriously again and neither can results of AFL matches.
