I just wanted to isolate this scene, since I've not found video of just this scene without the scenes before and after it. It's my favorite between Sephiroth and Genesis.

If any lessons can be learned from this scene it's certainly this: don't talk shit about anyone's mama. You may inadvertently trigger the apocalypse.
@dantespimp9 жыл бұрын
***** Of course Jenova is NOT his mother. 9_9 But he was built from Jenova's cells. Sephiroth has Jenova's DNA, making her as much a part of him as Lucrecia and Hojo. Furthermore, Sephiroth was told his mother was Jenova. So as far as HE was concerned, that was his 'mama'. And lastly... this was a joke. I didn't think I had to put citations or references in a joke over Sephiroth's mother. Sheesh. relax. Have a Snickers.

***** Honestly, while Angeal found redemption and Zack stayed the hero, Genesis isn't better off than Sephiroth. People forget Genesis murdered his step parents. He sacrificed the group of SOLDIERS he took with him during his defection, making them into clones with Hollander's help. And it was Genesis' pride that started this whole mess in the first place. Not only did this hot-headed jerk shoot a fireball right into Angeal's face during their three-way fight, but when Angeal intervened later, Genesis' own attack backfired and caused his fatal wound. The 'Goddess' cured Genesis only because she demanded him to redeem himself - hence, why the Goddess looks at Genesis disapprovingly. Genesis knows he fucked up. He isolates himself from the world, sleeping in some cave of wonder out of guilt. Genesis only awakens from his slumber when he senses the world might need him after all. He wants to redeem himself, restore his SOLDIER honor, and amend for his sins. So no, Genesis isn't in a happy place like Angeal or Zack. He has a long way to go before finding redemption. As for Sephiroth... his path isn't complete. I find it similar to Darth Vader's. Even more, Sephiroth actually achieved his personal dream. He becomes a God - an entity that is forever tied to everyone and everything (which is a big deal for him since years of isolation led to abandonment issues). I can even argue his actions indirectly saved the world. Keep in mind, Gaia was already going to hell due to mako over-consumption. Humans were sucking the life of the planet. The end of the world was going to happen no matter what. However, when Sephiroth entered the picture, several things happened. One, Shinra (the all powerful giant) finally met their match. And two, the desire to stop Sephiroth unified many diverse forces (including Shinra) that wouldn't have cooperated together otherwise. In bringing Sephiroth into the fold, humankind finally realized how precious the Planet was. I don't think it was a coincidence that the rise of Sephiroth happened during the Planet's own crisis. I compare the events of FF7 to the biblical Apocalypse event. For me, Lucifer stands as the Executioner while God stands as the Judge. The Four Horsemen help clean house prior to Lucifer's arrival. In FF7, God is the Planet, the Four Horsemen are the Planet's Weapons, and Lucifer is Sephiroth. Through Aerith's sacrifice and Cloud & company's actions, humankind proves their worth. As a result, the Planet answers Aerith's prayer, the Lifestream emerges, stops Meteor, and everyone is saved. That Sephiroth keeps returning even after defeat suggests he plays a much greater role in the whole cosmos. Where there is Yin, there is a Yang. He is that yang. So in this sense, it's hard to feel bad for Sephiroth. If his destiny is to challenge people and become the God of Death, then you could argue he finally achieved his lifelong dream: he's become one with everything. :)

***** That's the thing, Genesis was already a jerk before degradation happened. He shot his own best friend (Angeal) right in the face with a fireball. :/ When Angeal attempted to intervene *again*, Genesis still went after Sephiroth, which resulted in the wound in the first place.
@dantespimp8 жыл бұрын
***** I think we'll agree to disagree then. I felt Genesis' character was weak and inconsistent. The creators could've come up with a better catalyst for the events that didn't require him. Yet, because of Gackt, they felt obligated to give Genesis the spotlight in Crisis Core than to someone else. I mentioned to you already in another comment (you seem to always reply to my comments, by the way... O_o) that Angeal would've been a perfect alternative. When Genesis got cured, I felt the game essentially rewarded a spoiled brat. Sephiroth had more redeeming qualities than him. Even in the original FF7 game, Sephiroth showed compassion - he gave Cloud permission to see his family. He also acknowledged that leaving a man behind was cold but knew the mission had to move forward during the bridge incident. He spoke highly of Dr. Gast and freely explained the nature of materia to Zack. And it was evident that he envied Cloud for having a hometown - a sign Sephiroth cherished emotional ties. Even in his downfall, Sephiroth wanted to avenge the Cetra (despite not knowing Jenova wasn't a Cetra). The issue with Sephiroth is that he cared intensely; a little *too* much in fact. :P In contrast, Genesis was only out for himself. He wanted to be the 'hero' but let his jealously with Sephiroth get the best of him. Then he got wounded and it all went downhill from there. Yes, Genesis got his 'wish' - stopping the degradation. But that doesn't make him a 'hero'. Only Zack qualified as the hero in the story. Genesis only stopped his degradation. Even then, it came at a great price. Therein lay the irony. He got his wish but lost everything, including his two best friends. Sephiroth's own fall could've been prevented altogether had Genesis not been a dick and simply stuck around. But Genesis *and* Angeal abandoned him, making Sephiroth completely vulnerable to Jenova's influence. This is why I don't like Genesis that much. He receives a cure for his disease. But what did he do to deserve that cure, aside from being responsible for everything bad that's happened afterward? It would be one thing if Genesis learned from his mistakes. But the game compilation ends with him finally awakening from his seclusion. We got Gackt grinning like a madman and flying off with ominous words. Nothing in that scene indicated a humble man who learned from his mistakes. But whatever. It is what it is. Perhaps after FF7's Remake, they'll do a better job at establishing his character. :P
@dantespimp8 жыл бұрын
***** You're only mentioning the redemption arc for Genesis only *after* I mentioned it though. XD You yourself said he was a 'hero' and lived a happy life after he got his cure, stating his dreams came true (while Sephiroth was destined to be damned 'forever'). Now you're flip-flopping your previous statements based on what I said and believe he was punished? O_o I'll resume my stance and simply say Genesis was never punished for his crimes. While his punishment comes from within (through self-infliction), no one makes him answer for his sins. Rather, the Goddess *rewards* him with a cure and leaves Genesis the choice to redeem himself (it's a choice, not an obligation). If the Goddess needed to save anyone, she should've saved Sephiroth. By the way, Dirge's theme song wasn't intended for Genesis. Not only was the Genesis scene a minor special cameo, but Genesis' own story arc hadn't been decided on until *years* later, when CC came out. This is why Gackt's scene is so ominous, dark, and somewhat sinister. At the time, no one knew if Genesis was a good or bad guy or his personal story. Previously, you made a point about Genesis serving a vital role in being the catalyst to the events. But you also mentioned (in these comment and in others) that the theme of friendship is the reason why Angeal and Genesis are also needed in FF7 canon. I agree. However, with the theme of friendship also comes its consequences. By that, I mean the consequences of *abandoned* friendship. The same ties that bring three men together ironically destroyed them when they became unglued. For Genesis, he abandoned Sephiroth to seek a cure. For Angeal, he abandoned Sephiroth because he thought himself a monster. But no matter the reason, the results were the same for Sephiroth: they betrayed him. It's important to remember Sephiroth suffered from abandonment issues (no mother, no father, and the only surrogate guardian he had - Dr. Gast - left him before turning up dead). It was a *big* deal for Sephiroth to place his trust on anyone. Angeal and Genesis were the only two he let into his private life; they gained his trust. When they abandoned him, they broke that trust and only made Sephiroth more reluctant to let anyone else inside his heart. This is why Sephiroth shouts 'traitor' a lot (first, referring to humans as 'traitors' and later to Zack in their fight). As I said before, Sephiroth cares intensely. Not only did Shinra betray him but so did his best friends. By the time Nibelheim happened, Sephrioth was an emotional wreck; a walking time-bomb. Having been abandoned by Angeal and Genesis, and forced to confront his origins, Jenova became his new light during his time of distress. Sephiroth sees himself in Jenova. The entire human race betrayed Jenova (back when he thought she was a Cetra), so he can relate to her frustration when his own friends betray him. It's actually worse (and more damaging) that Angeal abandoned Sephiroth. He was the one redeeming character that taught Sephiroth the importance of honor and dreams. When Angeal abandoned Sephiroth, not only did he betray his trust, but he also demonstrated how *expendable* honor and dreams were. Sephiroth realized all of the things he sprouted was bullshit. If Angeal couldn't abide by what he preached, why should he? That's where Sephiroth is coming from and why it made turning to Jenova that much easier for him. People perceive Sephiroth as this super villain, but really, the lack of connections and breaking of important bonds could destroy anyone; whether you're a bishie villain or a high school student. This is what I meant about the consequences of friendship. You can't only look at the positive gains. There are negative ones too. You can't argue that only Genesis' presence served as the catalyst when, really, Angeal did as much damage. After all, Angeal's inability to stick by his convictions/principals actually led to Zack's own death. Angeal took the easy way out in having his pupil kill him as opposed to weather out the storm and help Zack in saving both Cloud and Sephiroth. But Angeal chooses death instead. He isn't strong enough to accept his origins and, therefore, forsakes everything he stood for. Only Zack (optimistic colorful Zack) is able to remember his nobler intentions. In the end, Angeal and Genesis served as the last thresholds of Sephiroth's humanity. Dr. Hojo, Shinra, and even Dr. Lucrecia and Dr. Gast all contributed to Sephiroth's downfall. But it was his own best friends that became Sephiroth's final straw.

@chocobotaxi45063 жыл бұрын
Sephirot had a very weak sense of self from the beginning, never allowed to become a person by the company, Hojo, everyone who used him as a weapon hell, even his fan club. Then it was weakened by the betrayal of the only two people who had ever seen him as more than a science experiment or a weapon (excluding puppy boi over here), and then completely shattered by one of these two people. It's no fucking wonder he went cuckoo, let's be real. Like, real-life people with such a weak sense of self are barely able to human, and it's very easy to shatter their Self and build it back into something else, and that's what happened to Sephiroth. He had no way of fighting the mental breakdown and probable influence that Jenova must have used on him. Sephiroth's story is a tragedy, honestly, and Zack was just unlucky enough to be caught in the middle of all of this bullshit. Also, it'd be easy to hate Genesis for it, but his sense of self was shattered too, and Hollander took advantage of that. Genesis is not without blame but he was a victim too

Genisis knew angeal would degrade because they were both from project G the reason angeal had a white wing is because he kept his honor but was having a mental issue due to the jenova cells, Genisis had a black wing was because he went mentally insane but most importantly because he killed innocent people and the jenova cells.

A lot of people dislike this scene because they added Genesis but I kind of like it, he gets more of a rise out of Sephiroth than if it was just him alone with Zack. We see more of Seph's emotions here than just the disbelief and shock we see in the original game. It will be interesting to see if this gets another take on Remake. I heard that makers consider Crisis Core as canon for purposes of this game, even if we have 4 different versions of this same event(they have few different details, but end is always the same). This was the most recent one, and boss battle especially takes lot of inspiration from "Last order" anime: dialogue between Zach and Sephiroth remains largely the same as does boss battle coreography(all though extended of course for gameplay reasons). kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6HQiGqoadJ4nJI

Genesis is suffering a tragic fate. But his narcissistic and sadistic behavior makes it hard to ever feel pity for him. He is cruel to Sephiroth and takes some kind of sick enjoyment in it. Bitter that he was never on Sephiroth's level... In any sense. And then the raw ego to think that Sephiroth would join his side and help him.
@FernandoAlvarez-mp6wp2 жыл бұрын
I don't see it that way, they were friends. I wanted Sephirot as well as him and Angeal to turn against Shinra by telling the truth. He ignored that it would end up aggravating Sephirot's emotional and mental instability produced by his childhood and how manipulated he had been. And of course, he was not very tactful.

I think it's more along the lines that Angeal and Jenova can pass on their genes unto other beings, morphing them to look like them. Sephiroth on the other hand doesn't have this ability so Genesis thinks he is safe if Sephiroth shares his cells with him him.

That was never the case genesis, he was implanted with jenova cells while still inside lucretsia's body, after hojo convinced her to get pregnant by him, which hojo manipulated her, and used her to achieve his goal of making a supreme being, which he succeeded, but he was a shit father and only seen his son as an experiment, and not as a human being that he should have loved, nothing more, nothing less than an experiment that went right when it comes to all the physical factors, and a means to an end.

***** You remember when Genesis saw that woman dressed like a Goddess surrounded by the Lifestream? She just closed her eyes when he attempted to reach out to her, her look literraly said ''You've fallen low...'' as she turned away and dissapeared. The following scene was Genesis (seemingly) falling into a pit of darkness, though it may be that the Lifestream was just flying away/scattering, it really did seem as though he fell into pitch-black nothingness. Looking back, when I first saw the scene, I thought Genesis died then and there... but he died a bit after. That would have been a sad way to kill him regardless, I'm glad he died after writing the last part of that diddly-darn book, Loveless.

I get the villain thing, but Genesis should've stayed down.

Genesis you meanie, you're pretty much the caticlyst to what turned Sephy all crazy. I know all Sephy wants is to know the truth and his reason for existence but I think with Gen going awol and revealing that he was infused with Jenova's cell while wording it to make Sephiroth as the perfect monster led him to believe that was his purpose. If Gen hadn't done that thing's could've turned out differently. But poor Seph's already been filtered out by the creators to be the bad guy ;(

I genuinely can't fathom if someone find Genesis likeable. What makes him likeable? I've played the OG Crisis core, and I always get the feeling that both he & Angeal do not really consider Sephiroth as their best friend. While Seph was willing to go against Shinra's wishes to not chase & destroy them, cause he sees Angeal & Genesis as his only friends. If you find Genesis likeable, you might see yourself in him in a way I guess?? a bad friend and a petty a$$hole.
