I had no idea there were other variations for the secret belgian binding! Thanks for sharing so much bookbinding knowledge on your channel!

Thank you so much for this video! I saw this variation on a page of a fellow bookbinder and wondered how it was done. Amazing work! Greetings from Argentina 🇦🇷

Loved this one! This appears to be a studier version as compared to the first variation of the crisscross/Belgian biding. I suppose one could use a piece of cloth to glue the sewing to the spine, even when one is not using the cloth on the covers, right?

2:35 Could one maybe use a narrow chisel for the initial hole and then use the screwdriver to widen it? (I have an OCD for neatness and accuracy, so please correct me if I am over-complicating things here).

Absolutely. Whatever works for you. Do plenty of practice on scrap before trying on a book.

I enjoy your videos and teaching style very much. . In childhood, I recall seeing a book, wherein the signatures where sewn as individual little booklets... then the booklets where sewn to a cloth in the spine. Alas the book was badly damaged to allow the internal structure of the spine to be exposed. And the memory fascinates me, as it is so clear that each section was held together as if it where an individual book. Are you familiar with such a binding? I wonder what such a binding method is properly named.
@DASBookbinding3 жыл бұрын
Wow, it's a real shame you don;t still have the book. I love damaged books because you get to see the hidden stuff. What you had goes by a number of names such as stub binding or reverse guard or meeting guard. It has been common in atlases made with single sheet sections so the plates open up completely flat. There used to be a pleated material sold to bookbinders called Portland Guard for making these types of books. Bill Minter talked about it in a GoBW SOE video. Hasn't been available for decades. Thanks for sharing. All the best, DAS

This a masterpiece, so beautiful donr... i really need to ask, Is there a way for me to turn my spring bind notebook to a fansy hardcover book?
@DASBookbinding3 жыл бұрын
Some sort of overcover I think is the best solution. Sorry, but I've never made one. I'm sure there are vids on YT for it! Good luck! DAS

Fantastic video as usual. Would it be possible to combine all three variations to make a single book? It should be possible right? Thank you much
@DASBookbinding3 жыл бұрын
Yep. I think it would give me a headache keeping track, but... :) DAS

@@DASBookbinding Hello. A couple of weeks ago I finished a crisscross binding with all three variations. I think this is my third comment because KZbin keeps deleting the link. It truly was a headache as you said it would be, but the result is very very satisfying. I think the method of attaching the covers together is superior to the popular variation. I didn’t necessarily pull the thread that tightly and yet the cover was not as loose as the popular variation. The concertina also hides the ugly gap between the signatures very well, so I do share your sentiment about it. Overall I think that when you combine all three variations it makes for a fantastic result. Thank you so much for these videos and I hope you have a happy Easter. I’ll try attaching a link to some pictures but in any case it’s in my Reddit profile.

is this variation a more sturdy binding than the others?
@DASBookbinding2 жыл бұрын
Maybe? It's a rather delicate binding to start with. If you want sturdy then something with a lined spine is better.

It seems the sewing would go much easier with the boards held vertically in a press.
@DASBookbinding3 жыл бұрын
When I was editing the video it did strike me that holding it vertical did seem to go very well. Only trouble with putting it in the press is that it doesn't always go a smooth as the one I picked to show in the video. Just holding it vertical seem to work well. All the best, DAS
