I was there, for sure, you keep hearing me shout "Brava", also at the and of the opera's she sung in Scheveningen, studying at the royal conservatorium I was always there, and she always smiled at me at the end of the Opera, while I kept shouting "Brava" and she made a bow, only for me standing near the stage, I stil see her sweet face!!!!!

In 1983 I was chorusmaster for a production of Lucia di Lammermoor in Edmonton. Canada - with Deutekom and van Limpt. Years before I heard her sing Norma in Seattle.

John Mitchell, I think it is very interesting that you knew her in a working situation, what was your impression of her as an artist ?I knew her in the beginning of her career in the Stadsschouwburg in Amsterdam, I remember her doing small parts like one of the servants in Electra, and suddenly she was doing the big parts like Lucia and Norma. I never realized the greatness of her talent, in fact I did not like her much. I did not like her way of singing coloratura, I still have a problem with it, in general there was a timbre in her voice that did not appeal to me, only in the high registre the voice became really beautiful. It was maybe more her stage comportement that troubled me, she was no lion on stage like Callas, and I adored Callas, and even more her comportement backstage. She was no diva, she behaved like any other Amsterdam housewife, and maybe that kind of put me off, so I lost interest. It is only now that I rediscover her anew, and every recording I hear leaves me more impressed. She was one of the few great singers of that time, and we Dutch should be so proud of her !Why do you think she never became to be recognized as the best of the best of that time ? Greetings John.

@@12341234W1 If i may try to answer instead of John, it's very easy....Just compare her and Callas. Callas married a man who could be her grandfather for his money, just because he promised to make her a diva. She slandered everybody around her, singers like Tebaldi who in my opinion were better than her (just like Cristina here!!), she was American, spoke good English and French and had the mentality of business and success at any cost, and she paid dearly for her success,,,, she quarreled with managers and impresarios and even declared she would never speak with her mom let alone help her financially because she was a bad mother....Then she succumbed to Onassis who started his career as a drug dealer....And finally married an alcoholic singer, trying to refresh her career..... and had no kids, and probably committed suicide. Now, isn't it better to live like Cristina??....Also, most of the successful singers had husbands in the field who helped them, such as Horne, Sutherland, Caballe. Cristina was married to a boxer who could do nothing for her but accompany her everywhere and carry her luggage, I suppose... But she didn't "sell her soul", she remained herself, modest and honest, and as the saying goes, no scandals - no recognition!! If you hear bad news or good news, you'll first be interested in the disaster, not in the celebration. People look for dramas. Callas provided them, even by losing her voice. Cristina preferred singing nice operettas about love, and sweet Chrismal carols, and so she was less conspicuous. However, if you watch the videos from 1969, you'll see the crowd cheering for her no less than for Callas....

@@12341234W1 Also, Callas sang only in Italian (and some French) which was almost her native language, of course her accent was better and she sounded more natural than a Dutch singer, but she never tried to sing in English like Horne, let alone in German, she sang Isolde in Italian.......Cristina's Italian was good, and so was her German and her English and French (Plaisirs d'amour) let alone her Dutch,,,. I personally can't understand what people find in Callas. Her timbre is ugly, her upper register is egregious, and I suspect she had some back teeth missing which created a balloon effect, some blowing up of the cheeks, I don't know what it was, but I find it repulsive. But this also contributed to her fame, making her unique, you recognize her right away, with all her faults, and this is a mark of greatness, just as you may like Picasso or hate him, but you know right away it is his painting (or imitation with his signature... haha...) Cristina has her minimal faults, sometimes sounds like others, sometimes is a bit flat, sometimes loses focus and "speaks" instead of singing, but then comes her high diminuendo and you know it's her... I admire her coloraturas, and her acting ability is enough for me, I like concentrating on the music. In fact, I prefer a signer to stand still and not to caress and embrace and hold his colleague, which I find gross. Anyway, such a crystal clear voice, so pure, so beautiful, so stable in its vibrato, even when she was 55, sick....no, no, she had no rivals, maybe besides Nilsson whom I also adore,...But fortunately they had different repertoire so they complement each other.

Hallo daar, Ek is 'n Suid Afrikaner wat nou in Engeland bly. Ek stem 100% met jou, Cristina was 'n wonderlike sopraan en ja sy was NOOIT waardeur! Loosely translated I agree wholeheartedly with you and yes, Cristina was never truly appreciated! She entered the singing world when we had Sills, Sutherland, Callas, and Caballe reigning. Sadly she just did not make it to the top, NOT becuase she lacked talent but because there were too many reigning divas then!
@robertdonkers19377 жыл бұрын
I agree to disagree, Cristina performed al 1st tier opera houses, from the MET, Covent Garden, La Scala, Vienna with the greatest singers at the time as her colleagues. Del Monaco, Corelli, Pavarotti, Krauss, Carreras, Trojanos, Bruson, etc. She has not recorded as much just one complete Mozart and two Verdi Operas. A commercial artist she never became unfortunately.

Ongelooflijk- Unbelievable. (English: No proper recording and no understanding why the Dutch were so neglectful towards their own great singers and did not understand/appreciate enough the value of their art. Now it’s too late and lost).
