You might recall the Kitchen Conversation we had in September with Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos and his wife, actor Ariane Labed, when their film THE LOBSTER premiered at the New York Film Festival. During their visit to Criterion, the duo also took a trip inside our film closet to talk about (and take home) some of their favorites from the collection, from Bob Rafelson’s FIVES EASY PIECES to Robert Bresson’s AU HASARD BALTHAZAR.

@@oscarsalesgirl296 hmmmm haha yeah eh now that you mention it it definitely does seem like that could be possible. Cause yeah seems strange that when he gets to that film and mentions Josh all of a sudden she gets dismissive/uninterested out of nowhere, her reaction does seem telling of something. Although I would have to assume these segments are edited down quite a bit and heavily condensed from a lot more footage that we're not seeing, so who knows, maybe her reaction there had nothing to do with Josh even.
@MaddestMousse
@MaddestMousse 3 жыл бұрын
Oh... Could also have something to do with the mere fact that it was a Polanski film...
@MaddestMousse
@MaddestMousse 3 жыл бұрын
Cause it does kinda seem the reaction is maybe to the film itself when she looks at the DVD, that little head movement is like "uhh yeah okay alright then sure if you say so" or like "okay... whatever, like I care". not that the movie isn't brilliant I dunno but more just a reaction to Polanski himself that can potentially come with mention of his work? Maybe she's just full on not down with him in full capacity and knows that Yorgos knows that and that's what that reaction is.

I owe a lot to Yorgos -- the unique brilliance of both Dogtooth and The Lobster gave me that final push I need to make my decision to pursue film in further education. I'll make sure to check out the films he selected here. Thanks a lot for this video.

+smotnick Care to elaborate? All I'm saying is that Lanthimos' films can't really be told in any other medium of storytelling, and hence helped convince me that cinema can be a unique and powerful tool for discussion. If The Lobster can get financed, there really can't be too many limitations on creativity or originality in the industry.

When it comes to directors, I always try to guess a handful I think they will pick. I had Lanthimos pegged so well. I assumed he'd pick something from Bunuel, Ali: Fear Eats the Soul, Naked, and then something overly stylish (Le Samourai/Branded to Kll). I also loved seeing Labed choosing Man Bites Dog. Possibly explains why they clicked personally. Now I'm thinking of a double-feature of Man Bites Dog and Alps, or Dogtooth
