I'm happy CR is taking things in a new direction with their content...but this new campaign they plan on doing just doesn't resonate with me. I love the mystery/horror feel of it but I prefer to READ Mystery and Horror rather than watch that much content based on the genres. For me, only fantasy-themed RPGs will capture my interests

@@nickcarpenter3109 I get it; at this point, some people might feel fatigued by it all (much like people have been with Marvel movies lately.) But from MY perspective, the Fantasy genre has been sorely limited these past few years. Sure; we've got stuff on streaming like House of the Dragon, Rings of Power and of course, Legend of Vox Machina (with Mighty Nein coming to Prime soon next.) But Rings has become a HUGE letdown and when it comes to movie, no one puts any effort into the work anymore. It's just special effects and nothing substantial to follow it up. Horror is no better either; while YOU'VE been feeling worn out by the Fantasy genre, it's Horror that's been that way for me. You've seen one story with vampires, werewolves, zombies or a murder mystery; you've seen them all and THIS direction CR is going feels just like that

@@FiLtheThriL Actually yes, D&D was dying before they came along and they changed that and got old players and new one excited about D&D and the gaming hobby in general. WotC is the one to blame for hurting our hobby in the first place. Having said this it really is sad this all happened and it didn't have too. WotC got a cut of the pie. They published two books to Critters in partnership with CR and get a tonne of money on the DMsGuild for Mercer's creations. They actually GIVE CR money, by way of D&D Beyond sponsorship, because they know it's such good advertising. The OGL changes were 100% to stop larger corporations (Disney for example) from jumping into the RPG field using D&D's rules. They'd almost certainly have cut an individual deal with Mercer and CR to have it not affect them.

One point not mentioned is that streaming shows is a compelling way to learn a system's basic structure, even if you don't learn the rules in detail. Sitting down and reading a 100+ page Player's Handbook is daunting, but it's not so bad if you've been following a show with that system and got a basic understanding of how it's played. I first learned Dungeons&Dragons from the first season of Adventure Zone and they were *terrible* at knowing how to play the game, but it still helped me out when starting in a game proper.

Yep literally I keep saying that a huge reason people bite on 5e and CoC making them the highest played games out there...are because of the amount of easy to run oneshots and adventure modules for them. If a creator puts out a campaign setting in the hopes someone loves the setting, great....but if you product a few oneshots to show off the interest system mechanics and a module that will slowly introduce players to the world...makes the DMs load less (aka more likely for DM to want to try) and then players can get the itch to learn more.

I think learning rules by osmosis as you watch a compelling show is how a lot of people prefer to learn. That audience CR has access to will have a passing knowledge of how to play after and episode or two even if they didn't intend to. Just a quick question for Bob - would you be up for a YT post to get a feel for how many of us are planning to watch Candela Obscura? And a follow up after the first episode? I get the impression that some people are exclusively invested in 5e and others are following the live-play cast members regardless of system. It's definitely going to be interesting to see how this plays out. In the meantime, I'd like to suggest checking out sci-fi RPG Stars Without Number (Revised) and/or its fantasy cousin Worlds Without Number. In addition to their own game rules, a huge section (read: most) of each book is dedicated to system-neutral worldbuilding, with all sorts of random generation tables to help things along. As such, I feel like they might be right up your alley. Even better, DriveThruRPG has a free version of the core rulebook for each, so you can check them out without having to throw down cash beforehand. Anyway, I'd really be interested to see your take on Kevin Crawford's sandbox setting generation tools. (I was kind of blown away by his depth of thought in many regards.)

Keeping low hopes for a pleasant surprise. Honestly I have very big concerns about this, and this is coming from a critter who's cought up with the whole show and almost all side show's and one shots. As much as I love critical role they flopped BIG TIME on the blood hunter being very lackluster & other things like the Echo knight etc being broken at the same time. A lot of function's have so many holes in them because of ideas being poorly translated into the system with bad writing and cross checking nuance things players can do with certain abilities. ie: Aether walk; what happens if you leave something inside of a creatures body like a bomb or a dagger in the stomach? cuz it has enough space to still be considered "nearest unoccupied space", etc etc... There are just simple not enough examples or well used words and such in the ability descriptions.

Good points! Ultimately I think that shows how CR (and Matt's design) doesn't really fit with 5e where every little thing needs to be spelled out. Most games leave things up to interpretation so the players can be creative and the GM can actually be a GM, making calls about what should work and what shouldn't

I could be wrong about but I was under the impression that once published under Wizards content CR lost control over that content meaning they couldn't make changes/updates to work better. This may have been a contributing factor in setting up their own publishing and why the new Taldorei book didn't show up in Wizards store. I know balance isn't easy but Wizards has shown alot they didn't really care about making subclasses even balanced with eachother.

I think there's enough room for CritRole to do D&D and roll their new system out at the same time if they want to. They've definitely expanded to the point where they have a larger pool for casting than just the original CR group. My husband keeps insisting that there's some kind of merger in the works with Dimension 20 based on the amount of crossover appearances that have been going on lately with those two channels/groups, so that would certainly give them the expanded talent group they need to add new gaming system campaigns to their network if they want to go that way.

Great video! What you didn't really hit on is that a high profile streaming show going their own way is a great thing for us players (read: consumers) because it will create high profile competition for D&D. With that level of competition, WotC won't be able to rest on their laurels as easily, and will need to step fairly lively to stop loosing market share from not only needing to make up all of the lost good will from the OGL nonsense they pulled, but also to complete with CR's new stuff. Not to mention the eventual interest fall off after the Stranger Things excitement finally has passed that you spoke about. The irony of it all is it has kind of turned the infamous phrase, "You won and so did we [sic]." into kind of a self fulfilling prophesy. Perhaps not in the way WotC had imagined 🤣, but everything in the TTRPG world can't help but get better from this point!!

100 % Daggerheart is gonna be a hit. Tales of the Valiant kickstarter is working really well, so people still want 5e type of system. Said what you want about Pathfinder 2e, it's design could be seen as the opposite of 5e which alienate some audience of 5e. So if Daggerheart is aiming to be more rule light than Pathfinder, it could help to get some old 5e fan on board For me, I am curious about Daggerheart even if it keep the trend of fantasy being the main genre of TTRPG (I much prefer supernatural and sci-fi setting)

Gotta wonder if the Daggerheart system is going to go down the OSR route and base itself on B/X or BECMI. Although I guess it seems maybe a bit more likely that they'll take the O5R route and base their system heavily around the foundation laid out in 5E, as they do have their own playerbase to worry about and the familiarity might be a help for some of the members of their crew that just still seem to struggle with understanding the rules of the game they've been playing every week for the last 8 years.

On live shows CR often(?) always(?) asked who started playing D&D because of the show. My impression is the response was overwhelming. When they switch to Daggerheart either the ongoing campaign or start a new campaign, the majority of those will switch too. I think it's very hard to gauge how big the crowd of "casual" TTRPG players is, how many D&D players just bought some books and simply play. They might not even be aware of the OGL "controversy". They might know there are other systems, they might have heard of pathfinder but to them that's something strange only the real nerds play. When CR switches at least some of them might reconsider their game system too.

For all my fellow D&D and Critical Role fans out there, let's chat about the new system that Critical Role is developing. I've been a D&D player and Dungeon Master for 30 years. My love for Critical Role lies in the outstanding role-play and player dynamics - elements often missing in many role-play games, including my own. The camaraderie and focus that the Critical Role team displays are awe-inspiring. However, will this lead me to adopt their new system? Well, I'm still on the fence about that. The system needs to evolve significantly before it can compete with the maturity and extensive online community that D&D provides. The readily available rules clarifications and sage advice are invaluable assets for D&D players. Now, with D&D One on the horizon and Wizards of the Coast striving for backward compatibility, this might be a good time to consider transitioning to a new system. But bear in mind, it took me a while to transition from D&D 2e; I didn't even DM 3e or 4e. So, let's see how things unfold in the next 2-3 years. Whether it's D&D or any other RPG system, the magic lies in the stories we create and the bonds we form!

It's crazy, but as huge as 1.26 Billion hours of watch time sounds, the whole of Critical Role is ~1500 hours at present. And considering the majority of the videos on youtube have >1 million views, it's entirely possible CR has more "viewing hours". Though it's by WAY fewer people given that the whole of Stranger Things is probably 1/50 the length of CR.

They wouldn't do a live switch for the 3rd campaign. Critical Role understand the importance of moving on without burning bridges. But yes, they'd be silly not to at least try and switch to their own system for the next long term campaign.

Stranger Things' 1.26 Billion hours is likely still *far* less than Critical Role's watch time. Their KZbin channel has has 630 million views, campaign episodes are most of that, and they average 3-4 hours. Counting a "watch" as 2 hours per video (only slightly rounding up from half of 3-4), would make for the same 1.26 Billion hours, and that's before counting any watch time from Twitch or Geek & Sundry. Where Stranger Things probably takes the win is that it's far more people watching: there's only ~34 hours of ST, but over 1000 of CR, and people are probably more likely to watch ST as a larger group.

Had WotC fostered more of a community mindset, maybe allowed for product delays for more polished releases (looking at you Spelljammer), and you know, not have tried to screw over the OGL or send Pinkerton's to harass a KZbinr for their own mistake, I'd probably be just happy for this news rather than rooting for anything that kicks them in the craw.

I am with you on not being as enthused in the d6 pool system. Not they are bad, I have played ALOT of Shadowrun over the years and some Star Wars (that that was like 25 yeas ago and I don't remember much other then was just d6's) d20 or percentile (just 5x more divided really) have been my preference. But hey I am open and maybe they way this system plays will move my opinion on d6 dice pool systems up a bit.

i def agree that a mid-campaign switch is a bit too agreesive.... i dont think Matt would opt for that as the group as a whole dont seem to have bad blood with Wizards and in general probably dont want to burn any bridges. I can see, however, something near the end of the current campaign going the way of FF14 Online Ver1.0 and the world being "reborn" into a new system for the 4th campaign

Not their first time switching rpg systems for a game. They can use Daggerheart, illuminated worlds, and the d&d systems all at once in multiple different games if they want to. Im old enough to remember when at d&ds height during the late 80s to early 2000s multiple d20 systems available. For the most part though, pathfinder and d&d has passed them in popularity. It will be interesting to see if the short term illuminated world's systems and the campaign system daggerheart becomes as popular as pathfinder and d&d

I have to admit, I watch Critical Role not because they play dnd but even though they play dnd. They are just sympathetic and funny people and I enjoy to see how they have fun together. AND, of course, they are trained actors, so they know how to make good character play. I really hope they drop DnD. A monopoly situation will never make it happen that good ideas will rise up from nowhere, indie developers, 3rd party content creators and so on. And there are so many cool rule systems out there that need to be experienced.

I realize that it may track for google searches, but they were never playing 5E or 4e in Stranger Things (I've never cared to see if they were playing AD&D or 2nd Edition as I played both when they were still relevant), and it doesn't guarantee people who were actively trying out the game. If WotC had kept going with the utter trash that was 4e, it wouldn't have looked at ALL like what ST characters were playing on that series. 5E only has some vague semblance to early AD&D iterations and powers and attacks are nothing like it. Lots of old school players gave up on WotC and came back AFTER CR showed us the system in action. If CR had stuck with PF1, a lot of us old school, who had moved over to PF1 after 4e, would have been fine staying with that comfortable "3.75" that Paizo came up with. Experienced DM/GMs coming back to play 5E after we were shown the system wasn't utter crap is a big reason why the totally new ST/CR derived players had somewhere to try it out without doing it once and then giving it up. CR showing us another system and all the rolls and how it is played really is a good way to get DMs/GMs interested in learning the rules and running it. We all know we don't get to have 5-7 amazing professional VAs at our table every week, but it still gives us good vibes.

2:30 I believe, you got it the wrong way round. People don't watch Critical Role because it is Dungeons&Dragons, they are into Dungeons&Dragons because that is what Critical Role is (was) playing. They are into Dungeons&Dragons because that is what was shown in Big Bang Theory and in Stranger Things. It is because The Rock admitted to playing D&D back in the day that the jocks and cool kids, the demographic that used to shove roleplayers into the highschool lockers, now suddenly want to play D&D. If the movies, tv shows and celebrities start showing other systems, the new generation of players will follow them to the other systems. The number of new generation players that are willing to even consider other systems without celebrity endorsement was minute and statistically negligible...right up until the day when WotC declared their OGL policies when even bandwagoners suddenly started looking for greener pastures.

I dont think Critical role is going to convert their current campaign into daggerheart. if anything if they were converting characters to the new system it would be their old characters from camapign 1 or 2 to play them more. they've already said they're not done with mighty nein's story, having come back for a one shot with them before and want to do so again

CR are at a really good moment to switch to their own system mid campaign if they want. The gods are about to die. The way magic works is about to be reset. Tey could start the "new world" with their own system and that would fit perfectly with what is happening on the campaign.

People forget that they were playing Vox Machina as a Pathfinder game before they converted it to 5E for streaming. I honestly thought they'd make the switch to Pathfinder 2E for campaign 3, the thought that they might have had their own game in the works since C3 started makes sense why they wouldn't want to learn a new system before learning another new system.

Yea, I hope Daggerheart is a Classes-less 5e Style system. I feel like it would fix the problem of Class Names that seems to be how WoTC plans to enforce copyright trolling. Like maybe purchase abilities "A la carte" style, like if I wanted a Robe Wearing, Staff wielding Divine Caster that uses Intelligence, you buy the packages to create the class. I feel it would fit more interesting characters.
