I like to link the 'hold breath' to the hit points (hit points, maybe multiplied by 2/3). Afterwards drowning will do an x amount of damage per round. This means that hits also have immense consequences for holding breath...

Thanks for the video. Love your thoughts - finding someone who can both express themselves well and also understands the game on all levels is uncommon. The teacher training clearly helps!

@@TheDungeonCoach I’m surprised you haven’t! Your style is very much that of a teacher, easily able to break down information into manageable chunks and get it out there in a way that’s easily understood and useful! Rock on, Coach!

I’m planning to get it mostly because I’m such a huge critter. And I love the rivals thing. My hold breath homebrew is so similar! We really do think alike.

Having rivals to characters is fun. My party has an amazing race type thing going on. They have one team they really dislike and two other teams they like and someone died during the race. The idea of rivals reminds me of a book The Die of Destiny by Frank L. Cole.

Homebrew for underwater. Concentration check when hurt. Fail, lose half of your remaining air/ time. And remember that you don't get necessarily get air right after a fight. Oh yeah, and swimming with armor is a problem.

Agreed, underwater combat was a bit too lenient, but constant CON saves seems tedious and would slow the game down. So I made PC actions consume rounds of air instead. Action=2 rds, Move=1 rd, BA=1 rd. When you include the turn needed to hold your breath, that is a possible 30 seconds of air consumed. This is just a simplified form of my homebrew and there are exceptions depending on PC actions. It's just enough to give tension and force PCs to make hard choices with limited oxygen.

Strixhaven is amazing!! I'm obsessed with that book. Nay-sayers are crazy koo-koo puffs. I made a homebrew with my Strixhaven campaign. The Witchlight-esque carnival is located in the lower right side of the common campus (they are open during weekends and holidays). Also the Biblioplex library has the same selection as the Candlekeep Keep does. I'll probably implement other modules into the book as well - like the Acquisition Incorporated will take on the form of an Extracurricular that are generally the majority of the members are or ran by the Lorehold. As for Call of the Netherdeep, I'm excited! I tend to play a character that has a water breathing and swim speed because underwater adventure is overly alluring for me.

Next time you review a book you should consider reading it first, so that you'll actually be able to talk about what it contains, and whether those things are up to par or not. The only thing I took away from this video, is that you don't like adventure books, in which case you should probably not have wasted your own and everyone else's time 'reviewing' an adventure book.

Hold your breath SHOULD require concentration. Combine the mechanics. You have a number of breaths equal to your con modifier (minimum 1). If you start your turn not concentrating on holding your breath, you lose 1 breath. Every minute you lose 1 breath. For every turn you can breath you regain 1 breath. While at 0 breath, you are unconscious and cannot have more than half your hit points.

Honestly I so deeply dislike the rivals. SPOILERS to convince my players that they are about to embark on months of sessions but if they mess up the first section by rolling poorly, congratulations you're either villains or sidekicks to the story. Villains are cool and if the PC's want that then great, but the very real possibility that they become the ensemble of the story if I as the DM don't intervene, is a very frustrating and discard worthy mechanic. I can't do that to my players, either take away the realism of playing the game or force them to have their actions be meaningless in comparison to the rivals. I'll find a way to tweak it, but for sure not a fan.
