When looking back in the history of architecture, we realize that the architecture was primarily static, only ‘changing’ as the environment would change and would affect the material of the façade in different ways. These interesting facades were achieved through materiality or ornamentation, present in structures like Venice’s San Marco, a mosaic of spiritual treasure and in the elaborate friezes of the Parthenon. Over time, as technology progressed, the facades transformed as well. This paved the way for designers to develop architecture that responds to environmental stimuli in more interesting ways than ever before. Today, our cutting-edge technology offers dynamically transforming buildings from static monoliths to ever moving surfaces. These moving facades are what is known as kinetic architecture.
The simple form of kinetic architecture such as the drawbridge on castles can be traced back to the Middle Ages. But it wasn’t until the 20th century that architects truly began to discuss the possibility for movement as a significant portion of buildings superstructure. This is because the advancements in mechanics, electronics, and robotics provided new horizons to be explored and innovated.

This was very interesting to watch! I’d love to hear your thoughts on this, If an architect designs a full curtain wall system with led lights embedded in the glass, allowing different images to be displayed on the facade, would that also be considered kinetic architecture? Or does a part of the building have to physically move to be considered kinetic?

Good question. There is already a building that exists similar to what you are saying. Check out 'Rye Lights' by Ryerson in downtown Toronto. As long as the building facade gives an illusion of movement, it is considered a form of 'kinetic architecture' as far as I know.

Great video as always. I knew that to an extent humanity was dabbling in type 4- on the micro dimensional scale, but i wasnt aware it could be done to buildings. Honestly i dont know where we are on the micro scale. We havent really fully mastered type 3- but we dabble in type 4-. Perhaps when quantum computing really picks up steam we could dabble beyond type 4-

Absolutely! Quantum computers will definitely put us beyond type 4- I feel.

Beyond type 4-? Maybe one day...but how bout we master the technology we already possess before delving into ever smaller and dualistically larger projects.

@@spencervance8484 I completely agree with you there! We should master what we have first before dividing our attention with other things and completely mess up on everything lol

@@CriticallySelected when you say master are you talking about mastery to the point of say a shovel? In which case absolutely anyone knows how to use. Or are you talking about to the level of say how to farm? In which case a relatively small group knows how but produce enough that they benefit everyone with their excess
@CriticallySelected
@CriticallySelected 2 жыл бұрын
@@spencervance8484 Well, the shovel analogy would be super useful if we could get to that level. But even the farming analogy would be extremely good! Because if we think about it, even today, the general public cannot do many specific tasks, for example, make a cell phone from scratch. But we all do have cell phones and there is no shortage even though only a handful people probably know about the inner workings and specifications!
