There were a few bands, including Urfaust, who were calling themselves Brown Metal, because whereas Norwegian Black Metal was all epic and inspired by the majestic Norwegian landscape, these 'brown metal' bands were from the low countries of Belgium and the Netherlands and sang about the uninspiring flat swampy landscape they were used to.

The vocalist is amazing, truly a breeze of fresh air and originality on the BM scene. It almost feels like he is borrowing from DSBM, given the "nonsense" lyrics and the overall expressiveness of his emotional state. I remember first time hearing this band I immediately fell in love with their sound, maybe given because I enjoy DSBM and black metal in general. But this just feels different. Really glad you got around checking this band! Also a good reminder for me to revisit them 😀

Urfaust, they were such an original BM band. One of those that as soon as the "muisack" kicked in, you knew it was them.

Hey look, it's the band shirt I'm currently wearing. RIP Urfaust. They've been known to use broken recording equipment. I think the extra wall of sound on the last movement was just the guitarist hitting another distortion pedal. I learned this song on guitar by watching a live video of them. It's subtly the most technical song I know. There's no solos tho. Just complex folk riffing. ABAB. I believe the live versions of this song make more sense because the weird fade in makes you misread the format. Most of their music is in this format, steady unchanging slow beat, distant echoey high soaring melancholy vocals, meditative wall of distortion, and lots of intoxicants. I believe the beat is in 6/8. Idk enough music theory, I just remember hearing samples of 6/8 beats and thinking, "That's every Urfaust song"

One of the most unique masterpieces of black metal. This is a good track, but I think this album/compilation is so much better when listened to as a whole package! Looking at the cover art, it looks a little bit like something maybe Kittelsen would make, but I don't know where the art comes from. There is something so hypnotizing with their music, the vocals are the main driving force. Ethereal tales of darkness from the victorian era, or well earlier. I could form such pictures in my head, (but I would certainly need to learn some more about the old times of when fairy tales and the occult was prevalent as such). Yeah it's weird how black metal of all things could make you think about and connect the dots to a time way back in history even when all the music possible would be classical and folk music and such. The music does still fit this image in my mind at least Also, people seems to wonder if the lyrics even existed in the first place, or if it's like Cocteau Twins

I saw Urfaust live once, a few years ago, it was an absolutely ritualistic ecperience, I felt myself entering some trance-like, meditative state after a bit. Truly amazing! P.S. the title pronounciations was not very accurate (edit: "Töchter" specifically), but it was fine.

I thought he honestly pronounced it pretty well considering how hard some of those sounds are for English speakers.

@@tedesco7219 Yea, after listening again, the "Töchter" part was a little messy, the rest was fine. And you're right, it's hard to pronounce indeed.

Oh this is solidly black metal. And it's great black metal at that, with a solid catalog, and for a two piece a great band live.

Urfaust are probably my favorite metal band because they really sound like noone else, especially the vocals. There are no lyrics whatsoever (except on the one cover song they made), so don't even bother searching them, it's pure emotive expression. They are probably the band that got me into Black Metal (at least partially, not a huge fan of the scene overall and won't ever be) by playing with many BM elements but also giving their own spin on things. In my humble opinion, this here isn't even in their top 20 of their best songs, they can do quite a bit more. "Die erste Levitation" would be much recommended, or maybe "Der Einsiedler". Also they consistently made amazing band shirts with some of the sickest prints I've seen.
