„You Go On Ahead“ is an all time classic for me. Just genius layered songwriting. I can never get enough of it.

I really enjoyed your analysis of these two tracks. I look forward to another Sunset Rubdown reaction! The combo of ‘Stadiums and Shrines II ‘and ‘They Took a Vote and Said No’ really got me into the band. They are the first and second tracks off their first LP Shut Up I Am Dreaming. The band is so much fun.

Late to the party but awesome you revisited the band. Trumpet-Trumpet. Toot! Toot! is really an interstital song (for Sunset Rubdown) that fits perfectly in the overall album musical narrative particularly the last 4 songs. You Go on Ahead is a better example of a Sunset Rubdown song that takes you on an unpredictable journey which is awesome. You really need to do a full album listen to one of their 3 proper albums. They all are great but probably best to start with the last "Dragonslayer" which is the most polished... "Shut up I am Dreaming" and "Random Spirit Lover" are also excellent. Lots af linked themes between the two when you dig into the lyrics. BTW... did you catch the "Blinded by the Light" musical reference in You Go on Ahead (Manfred Man version) with the high 3 note arpegio iine and lyrics about Black Car. Cracks me up every time I hear it...

I didn't catch that reference but now that you mention it it's clear as day 😄

They're just called Sunset Rubdown. Spencer Krug is the name of a member in the band. You figured it out. I'm always impressed by your ability to discern and remember so much from a song after only one listen. Really hoping articulate silences part 1 and 2 by the stars of the lid are covered this week. Take care.

This was interesting hearing your take on these two beautiful songs. Id love to hear your re-action to the whole album 'random spirit lover', or even just trumpet pt 1 and the two songs it separates (the taming of the hand that came back to life, and child-hearted losers). Spencer is a weirdo. Hes a university of mcgill trained classically trained pianist, and an obsessive composer and experimenter. Those three songs together feel like a snap shot of spencer, at least how he was in 2007.

instantly reminded me of theatrical post-punk/goth of the 80s-early 90s. aren't they a bit late to the game? sounding good nevertheless, might want to check them out

I think this marks the 6 song you've covered by Spencer or one of his bands. The first was 'Idiot Heart'. That's the track before 'You Go On Ahead' on the Dragonslayer album of Sunset Rubdown (which I think is also a proper band, but one where Spencer is the primary front-man). Three songs were under his Moonface moniker, in livestreams 78, 113 and 118 (sometimes solo piano, sometimes with a larger band). 'Kissing the Beehive' from his other band, Wolf Parade (not solo/creator gig, but part of the band), seemed to really bounce off of you. I'd be curious how you'd hear those tracks now, placing them in a common context? I think it's safe to say you've had a crash-course in a an artist who's one of my long-term favourites. There's quite a range of sounds and styles across his body of work, though also something very identifiable about everything he touches. His last few years of 'solo' work, under his own name, are definitely a new stage and style (probably closest to the solo piano years, though neither solo nor piano focused). I guess I've kept at pushing his stuff your way because I enjoy your analysis even when the songs don't have the same emotional resonance for you as I experience. Clearly, I think his is a 'voice' that deserves more recognition than I think he gets, so maybe it's a way to try to pay him back for all the pleasure he's provided to me.

I had no idea all of those projects were connected by him. I'll see if I can find some time this week to review some of those and give you an opinion about all of it within the context of knowing it's all his work.

I'm really glad you've been suggesting Spencer's brilliance. I've not followed his stuff under his own name as closely as previously. I think moonface is my favorite Spencer Krug evolutionary phase. A 20 minute vibraphone song as an EP, an album with 1980's sounding electronic organs, an album entirely on piano, and an album where he randomly takes the helm of a band he met on tour in Europe. His mad genius is breathtaking.

I’m wondering if there’s any Wolf Parade or Handsome Furs to recommend? Sons and Fathers.., I’ll Believe in Anything, Sing Captain… I love them all

@@spencershaw4419 Bryan covered 'Language City' in the most recent live-stream, and 'Kissing the Beehive' in a special selection about a year ago. I don't think he's done any other Wolf Parade tracks, but I share your love for the tracks and albums you've mentioned. I don't think any of the Wolf Parade stuff has particularly floated his boat, but as always, he's had interesting things to say about them.

Really reminds me of some of the more experimental sides of early Glam Rock.

The band IMMINENCE with one of these songs or all the songs. These are new songs that don’t have a music video to them. 😄 These are visualizers for the new album “The Black.” All of these songs are amazing…. 1. “Beyond the Pale” 2. “The Call of the Void” 3. “Come What May” 4. “The Black”
