I think it's really cool that you keep listening to Schnittke, stuff like this is what sets you apart from most other reaction channels. Schnittke is obviously not an easy listen but he's never boring and there are so many moments of surprising beauty and tenderness in his work, as well as raw emotion. You should check out his Requiem, either on your channel or just privately, it's one of his greatest works and probably the only Requiem that includes sections for electric guitar and drums. Schnittke takes elements from so many different styles and eras but he somehow always manages to make it sound personal and idiosyncratic. His film music, which is mostly written in a more tonal and often Romantic idiom, is also fantastic.

One thing dawned on me: ALL slides on string instruments automatically include micro tones. Must be the most common use of microtonality. But the slower the sliding is, the more prevalent the micro tones get.

It's funny you mention that. I'm sure you're gonna get a kick out of the discussion on Thursday's video

Opposing movements could be Opeth(?) Or maybe just opposing harmonies(?)

Wow, that was anxiety creating. Some beautiful sections, but lots of pain and dissonance. I think our violist plays with the side edge of the bow, and believe that's standard. I could be wrong...

So, dissonant classical suits you better than electric guitars mimicking alarms and sirens huh? You conservative snob! Seriously, I enjoyed this quite a bit (more too). The romantic style/moods paired with/contrasted to the tense dissonance makes for an excitement and nerve that either couldn't fix on it's own. I heard some iteration of Stravinsky's Rites of Spring in there as well. And you didn't get to all escape alarm sound mimicry here either 😅

I hadn't made the connection between this and Scarcity -- this is definitely a dissonant day for the channel 😅 Also you got a chuckle out of me with that first line. :)
