As hilarious as this is, it's also likely because it's like. "Ah we want someone who *sounds* like this specific actor...but we don't want to pay what it would cost to HAVE that specific actor."

You would still think someone would have the presence of mind not to ask an actor to act like an actor who is themselves and then not cast said actor. At the very least don’t send the “we want you to sound like Taliesin” part TO Taliesin 😂

Everyone's jumping to the conclusion that it's to save money (which, fair). Practically speaking, if you have a specific voice in mind for the character, it's best to be upfront about it. If you want someone to sound like a specific person or character, then just say it. The alternative is beating around the bush and being vague and generally unhelpful. You're just causing stress for both sides and wasting time. This is why casting calls are so open about it and why these actors are more amused than upset. Edit: Even if calling the original actor is a viable option for the studio, having an open casting call may lead to another actor doing a better job than your inspiration or someone thinking outside the box and changing how you view the character (e.g. James Woods ignoring Disney's more serious and creepy description for Hades and playing the character like a slimy used car salesman on a whim). It's better to keep your options open, even without considering the cost difference.

Most performer industries are like this. Roles will often use that as a reference, and may find someone better suited. Saying "sounds like Laura Bailey" could mean intonation, sound of voice, but doesn't necessarily mean the exact actor.

They know exactly what they are doing unfortunately. Laura Bailey being an extremely successful voice actress has earned a minimum cost for her services. Now imagine you want a voice for a character, and you can only think of Laura as the perfect voice but her contract is WAY outside your budget. You'll then look for new talent that sounds similar because it's cheaper.

VA's cost money and when the CD only gets a % of a budget (often a small %) they have to make due with what they can. As insulting as it is, Marisha getting asked to sound like Laura is basically the casting director saying "We can't afford your friend but you're much cheaper so can you sound like her?"
