I have yet to figure out how to effectively shuffle with sleeves. Maybe my sleeves are just shitty, but they're always too sticky to mash shuffle or overhand shuffle well. And I can't riffle shuffle (nor would I want to bend my cards anyway)... last time I played with sleeves, I overhand shuffled for like 5 minutes straight, and still ended up screwed by having puddles of 4 or 5 lands stuck together in chunks throughout the deck.

We had this special shuffle for this exact reason. Split Lands and Cards and then put them 1:2 back together. Then shuttle your Deck.
@LoPan12
@LoPan12 Ай бұрын
@@IceMetalPunk the trick is that once you mash (use bottom corner to make it easier) you need to let up on the pressure you're using to hold the deck together. Easiest way to do it without dropping your cards is to put the not ful,y mashed deck bottom down on the table, and then kind of let go with your fingers and thumb, and then push it together with your palms. I can mash shuffle very quickly and effectively this way, just takes practice. Feel free to ask me if I didn't make any sense above 😅

I'm so happy that this happens. I'm so glad Matt got back into mtg. I've been working for over a year now on a commander set that adapt the Mighty Nein story. I've currently done 237 cards, excluding the basic lands, with no more than 5-6 reprints, the rest is original creation. After literal hundreds of hours, i need to make a bit of fixing and the set will be ready for printing. From the start i always wanted to send one full printed set to Matt, and i hope i'll do in the following months. I'm currently working on a C3 set, but much bigger, including the Crownkeepers story in it (and let's be honest C3 is just so dense, it's going to take me a few years). I really love making those.

@TheViv06
@TheViv06 Ай бұрын
@@zmollon for sanctioned competitive play, the original mulligan was “all land/no land”. If either player had all lands or zero lands in hand, they were allowed to reveal the hand, shuffle then draw a new 7. The first revision (always named after the city in which the pro tour began using it) was called the Paris mulligan, in which a player may decide to shuffle and redraw their hand minus one any number of times, always reducing the draw by one. est 1997 The next version was the Vancouver mulligan, which followed the same rule as Paris, each mulligan reducing the draw count by one. With this version, if you started with fewer than 7 cards in hand, you would scry 1 card before the beginning of the game. est 2015 The London mulligan replaced Vancouver, and is the current version used for pretty much all sanctioned play. With the London, every mulligan taken is a full draw 7, with one card per mulligan sent to the bottom of the deck. So a game where you mulligan twice before keeping would have you draw 7, then take 2 from your hand and move to the bottom. est 2020 Commander and other multiplayer formats have a kind of static “first mulligan is free” rule, then follow the standard competitive mulligan rule for each one after that. I have heard of creators using what people have dubbed the “streamer mulligan”, which is starting off by drawing a 10 card hand then keeping the best 7, and putting the rest on the bottom. Seems to make for better content games 😁

Mulligan Rules as far as I remember them: Classic Mulligan - reshuffle draw 6, then 5, etc. Vancouver Mulligan - reshuffle draw 6 scry 1, draw 5 scry 2, etc. London Mulligan - reshuffle draw 7 every time but put 1 card on the bottom of library for everytime you mulliganed Multiplayer has one free Mulligan + first player drawing as well

Liam had a good question about tracking everything on the board. When you’ve played long enough you’ll remember what a card does and certain card names send off warning bells like Parallel Lives, but until then you just have to wait and see what happens then ask questions like, “what card just gave you an extra 20 tokens,” or something. Commander has so much crap going on so it’s hard to keep track of and I don’t recommend it for new magic players, even though that’s what I started with and is my preferred format. Playing 1v1 with 60 card formats is what I recommend to the teens I work with that want to learn. I hate being a rules lawyer but I feel like a buzzkill keeping track of triggers or telling everyone their card doesn’t work the way they thought it would, or that certain lands enter tapped 😢😅 but that’s how I learned I guess. When you play around better players, you get better and expand your knowledge. Sir, this is a Wendy’s

Yeah... I've been playing exclusively Commander since around 2012-ish, but my friends just recently got into it. I love playing with them, but having to constantly remind them that no, static buffs are not in fact counters, and then insist on that after they Google it and misread a forum post... like I said, I love playing with them, but there's a learning curve for new players.

They are using Parallel Lives wrong. It doesn't work with Emily's commander. It creates a copy of the token that is created 0/0 hydra, but it does not copy the counters. That means the copy dies immediately.
@taylorjohnson5148
@taylorjohnson5148 Ай бұрын
@ it does work according to gatherer. “The Hydra token enters the battlefield as a 0/0 creature. Any abilities that modify or trigger on this event apply. After the token is on the battlefield but before any player can take actions, +1/+1 counters are put onto the token,” “If an effect, such as that of Parallel Lives, causes Zaxara's ability to create multiple Hydra tokens, they each receive X +1/+1 counters.”
@IceMetalPunk
@IceMetalPunk Ай бұрын
@@paulgreene9570 No, they're not. Parallel Lives doesn't turn something on the field into a copy of the hydra token, it causes extra hydra tokens to enter as part of the same ability. When they enter, they also enter with the counters just like the original did. It's not copying the counters from the original, it's making the ability from Zaxara create extra tokens and apply to all of them.

Trample changes how damage CAN be assigned. Banding changes WHO chooses how to assign damage. Trample doesn't automatically put excess damage on players - it allows the controller to do so, but it's not mandatory. See 702.19b "any excess damage is assigned as its controller chooses among those blocking creatures and the player, planeswalker, or battle the creature is attacking. "

Super fun seeing Matt getting back into MtG! Hopefully, there's more to come. He really brought some interesting brews here and on Commander at Home. One thing about banding, though, it actually completely negates trample. Since trample isn't something automatic happening when you deal excess damage, it changes how you're allowed to assign damage. If you wanted to, you could still assign excess damage to the blocking creature, but there's basically no reason for you to normally. But with banding, the defending player can force that to happen. They could also spread damage out on several blockers, possibly soaking it all up without killing anything. It's actually kinda good when you're multi-blocking stuff.

32:00 i get it that Liam is new to the game, but Treetop village comes in tapped so that would be 1 less mana for the primal might and then the Sunfrill wouldn't copy the adjusted galtha values.

One thing I noticed is that at 28:24 Liam had the city's blessing, thinking he didn't have it. Had to double check, but lands count towards the ascend mechanic. It specifically says "as long as you control ten or more permanents, you get the city's blessing." Lands and tokens also count as permanents. Yes, I did look it up, because I wanted to double check. But I also noticed that nobody said anything about it, however, as Liam Is Fairly new to MTG, he probably hasn't had the chance to learn every single mechanic. Just thought I'd let you folks know! Love it so far!

So Matts deck has several weird functions, which each cancels out the strength of the other players. Banding helps stopping Trample, Rampage punishes hoards of 1/1s, mirror flipps DeathTouch =)

so at 1:14:04 matt put the shield on his commander which gave it hexproof meaning it cant be targeted by spells and abilities from opponents, meaning that the march of swirling mists at 1:15:26 would have been unable to target it and the combat should have still happened.

Yes, but the effect didn’t target the commander, it was a blanket effect on his board, so it gets through. Same reason hexproof doesn’t negate board wipes.

A bit of rules lawyering for Liam's plays, to hopefully help him learn this pedantic game better (as if he'll ever see this; he's got much better things to do): 24:01 Drover of the Mighty's increased power counts towards Ghalta as well, for a total of 11, allowing you to pay only 2 green mana for Ghalta's colored mana cost. 24:18 Ghalta is the 10th permanent you control (lands are permanents), giving you the city's blessing from Wayward Swordtooth's Ascend ability. 28:11 Sunfrill isn't temporarily copying Ghalta, it's a permanent effect (it would say when the effect ends otherwise). And a bit more pedantically, it was never "Ghalta", since Sunfrill keeps its own name. 28:17 Wayward Swordtooth is able to attack or block, as you should already have the city's blessing. 29:30 Treetop Village enters tapped. 30:01 Primal Might's X value should be 6, since Treetop Village would've already been tapped. 32:11 Yes, though Sunfrill is copying Ghalta currently, it can still copy Ghalta again, but copies only look at the printed values/effects on cards. It doesn't copy the adjustments from Primal Might, and it doesn't copy the damage marked on Ghalta from the fight. Sunfrill is still a 12/12 Legendary Elder Dinosaur with trample. 33:50 Not about a play, but just strategy: The commander tax is colorless mana. Throwing Ghalta at a threat with deathtouch is more advantageous for you, because Ghalta's cost reduction also counts toward paying its commander tax. The other players would have to pay 2 extra each time for their commanders, but the extra cost is largely negated for you. 37:39 Emily's play, but with Liam's cards, so I'll include it: Emily had played a sorcery, indicating that the beginning of her precombat main phase had already passed, so can't get mana from Hulking Raptor until her next turn. She had already tapped all her mana to play Villainous Wealth, and so would be unable to activate Thrashing Brontodon's ability. 48:46 Benefactor's Draught untapped all creatures, not just Emily's. Your Ghalta should be untapped. 1:56:38 Emily said Llanowar Elves has to block, which is true at the moment, but you can choose to tap it for 1 "floating" mana to avoid it blocking, so wouldn't then lose the Elves to and pump Gabriel further. 1:57:50 Ify didn't say it, but Liam should've lost 7 more life from Ify's Wound Reflection.
