@@maximum14ft - He may well have written that before he even heard that Laudna was dead. He's paranoid enough to do that even before knowing that Otohan was specifically onto him, just in case something like that did happen. There were signs that big things were afoot before that. I forget how early he knew that Otohan might know about him. He might only have known for sure in the same Sending that asked him for help finding a way to resurrect Laudna, or an immediate followup. If so, that was probably on the airship out of Bassurass, or even while holed up under Imahara Joe's shop. I forget. But I think there was some time when he knew things were super serious, before Otohan pulled the Eshteross connection from Orym's (?) mind, and could plausibly have written the letter then. Other people are recalling that the party asked for his help finding resurrection, but I wasn't totally sure if Eshteross only learned of Laudna's death in person when they returned to Jrusar. (I edited this comment to not state that as my best guess, though, thanks for the correction.) I was thinking the way they RPed that scene that maybe Eshteross hasn't known, but maybe I'm misremembering, or they forgot their Sending, or seeing the body was what made it feel truly real so it still had a big impact.

All of them-especially Matt, Marisha, Tal, and Liam-give great physical performances. Look at how Marisha plays with her hair early in this episode (she’d never do that as Beau), or Tal’s resting pissed face (Caduceus always looked relaxed). Liam’s harder to pin down in this arc-at least I’ve been less aware of Orym’s mannerisms-but as Caleb he almost never made eye contact, and when he did it was always at an extremely important moment.

@@Aozora210 - You could see with Jester that *sometimes* there was an intentional choice by Laura to waste words because it's what Jester would do. Just like Sam did a couple times as FCG, after seeing how much fun Laura had with it as Jester. But sometimes I think it just kind of happened that Jester would run out of words without getting to everything, even when she was sort of trying not to waste another spell slot. @@spcwild - Yeah, I wondered if that would work. In previous dreams where she tried to cast stuff, Matt was pretty clear she wasn't literally casting a spell, she was willing it to happen and it did. (She's a sorcerer, that's kind of how her spells work already... Except for her spells that aren't psychic spells, she does have to say the verbal component and gesture the somatic, even though it comes naturally, innately from their force of personality, not from study.) Since her upward flight had stopped working, and she was over Exandria in a dust storm, not on Ruidis I think, she probably assumed she was falling because the Ruidis flare was fading, so her ability to Fly was ebbing and gone. I'm curious what would have happened if she'd tried, if she could at least have done something like Feather Fall. But we couldn't have had that while also having her acting choice with full impact. Holy crap, that had my full attention.

This is a beautiful thing that is woven into the class details themselves. The begining training of a blood hunter, the very first step to controlling the curse, is to prevent it from being transmitted unless intended. They know they can't completely control the curse, so they make sure even if they lose control of their bodies, they won't unknowingly spread it. Very fun background for the class. Chetney is still new to this. He likes to play with the power he was given, and pretends he has it all under control. @@thefire76 Ashton has a custom +2 two-handed hammer/maul that goes with his backstory, The scythe isn't better, at MOST it's a sidegrade? Chetney didn't have a magic weapon and he has Butcher's Bib, an apron that makes him crit on a 19 with slashing damage (aka works with that scythe/greatsword), and he can reroll bad weapon dice roll to have better crits. He took dueling because he wanted to use his woodcrafting tools as weapons initially, but you gotta take what your DM gives you, and even if it's not the ideal weapon choice for him, it's still a very strong upgrade that wouldn't help Ashton much. He sometimes pays for stuff with silver coins, doesn't he? I think in Matt's setting, silver doesn't hurt lycanthropes just to touch it, or Matt probably would have been looking out for that and said something when Chet tried it out. Silvered weapons bypass the damage resistance of lycanthropes, including Chet's hybrid transformation, but narratively it seems fine if that's all silver does. The real downside for Chet using it would be wasting his level of Rogue, and his Dueling fighting style. * Dueling: +2 damage with 1 handed weapons when not wielding a 2nd weapon. (His off-hand chisel is a reflavoured shield, doesn't count as a weapon) * Sneak Attack: +1d6 damage on one attack per turn with a finesse or ranged weapon (even if you use Str instead of Dex for the attack). A chisel could be that if they're treating it as a shortsword; his damage is piercing and it's 1d6. I think we've seen Chet get sneak attack damage at least once, maybe when Matt reminded him. He usually fjorgets to add it, even when he has advantage or there's an adjacent enemy. He'd be giving up 2 AC from his "shield" to do only slightly more average damage, assuming Turmoil has at least a +1 damage bonus. (Or less if only one attack hits, but he gets Sneak Attack). If Turmoil has a bonus to hit, hitting more often does swing the average towards it. Assuming Turmoil is a +1 weapon: * Turmoil as greatsword, -2 AC: 2 attacks each doing 2d6+1 +3 (str) + 1d6(crimson rite) averages 14.5 for one, 29 if both hit. * Sword+board (chisel): 2 attacks for 1d6 +3(str) +2(dueling) + 1d6(crimson rite) averages 12 each, plus 1d6 sneak attack on one. So 15.5 for one hit, 27.5 for two chisel hits if he gets Sneak Attack. * Turmoil as 1h club, plus shield: 2x 1d4+1(club) +3(str) +2(dueling) +1d6(crimson rite), average 12 each. No sneak attack; it's not a Finesse weapon. So 12 or 24 average for 1 or 2 hits. (But hopefully at a +1 to hit, which might compensate vs. the chisel, especially on high-AC targets) * Hybrid transformation unarmed strikes: 3 attacks if he also spends a bonus action: 1d6 +3(str) + 1d6(crimson rite). average 10 per hit. RAW, the +2 dueling fighting style doesn't apply. For Sneak Attack, you might argue that it's a finesse "natural weapon", since the blood hunter rules let you use Str or Dex, but they don't use the word Finesse. So with crimson rite activated on his unarmed strikes (separately from his weapon), average 30 damage if all 3 hit. Next level, Chet's unarmed strikes will get +1 to hit but not damage, so they'd match Turmoil. Hybrid Transformation and Crimson Rite are both bonus actions, so if he's not already transformed and flame-on, he can only make 2 attacks per round for the first 2 rounds. But after that, he doesn't have other good bonus actions since he only has 1 rogue level, not 2 for cunning action. (In a recent episode, Fearne used Cunning Action disengage, but she can't actually do that. She could have had Mister fiery-teleport her away.) But once he does have this combo up and running, it's his highest damage per round, especially after his next ASI (in 2 levels presumably) brings him up to Str 18 (+4). That will add one to each attack, so 3 for this option if they all hit, vs. 2 for the other options. Chet can still use a shield in hybrid transformation, and still make 3 unarmed strikes, so this option doesn't have an AC downside; only the 2h greatsword option has that. If he only hits with one attack, he still gets Sneak Attack, so it's 2d6+1 vs. 1d6 (chisel) +2(dueling) + 1d6(sneak) Both plus + str+rite. If Turmoil has + to hit, that's definitely valuable, and swings the balance Turmoil is a magic weapon, so it will bypass resistance in creatures that are resistant to non-magic weapon attacks. But next level, assuming Chet takes a 7th level of Blood Hunter, his claw strikes with hybrid transformation will count as magic weapons if he has a crimson rite active. (Speaking of, did Orym give back that magic shortsword Vex gave/lent him before Pike astral-projected them? This episode, they thought his weapon wasn't magic. Orym can use Turmoil, but it would be terrible for him; Dex 20 (+5), Str 10 (+0). Neither greatsword nor club allow dex.) --- Anyway, we have to look at how much Chet is gaining and losing vs. how much Ashton would gain. It would be a pure upgrade for Ashton, no tradeoffs. He'd be doing an extra 1 damage per hit, and have a +hit bonus so he adds all that base damage (str+rage + 2d6 weapon) more often. And with no downside in AC. And if he hits with two attacks, an upgrade of +2 damage. vs. Chetney hitting with both attacks gaining 1.5 average damage (chisel vs. greatsword), assuming Chet gets Sneak Attack. But if he's not getting Sneak Attack (either because of conditions or because Travis forgets he's a rogue), then 2h mode is a bigger upgrade for Chet. Trading defence for more offense is viable, especially with hybrid transformation against enemies that are mostly doing physical damage. Whoever doesn't get the +1 bonus to hit (assuming there is one) will miss slightly more, costing the party their average damage on some fraction of attacks. * Ashton with hammer: 2d6 + 4(str) + 2(rage) = average 13. * Chet with +0 greatsword: 2d6 + 3(str) = average 10. optionally plus 1d6 (3.5) crimson rite for average 13.5 * Chet with chisel: 1d6 + 2(dueling) + 3(str) = average 8.5. Optionally plus 1d6 crimson rite, average 12. (Plus sneak attack, but he only needs to hit once a turn to still get it.) Ashton's rage bonus will go up to +3 at lvl9. He might also boost his Str to 20 at lvl8. Chet will probably boost his Str to 18 at lvl9 overall, bloodhunter 8th. So Ashton has one or two more increases to damage-per-hit coming at least as soon as Chet does. Chet's hemocraft die (crimson rite damage) goes up to 1d8 at bloodhunter 11th. Having a transformable weapon would let Ashton carry a shield if he wanted, for times when defense was important, like when spending actions grappling and stuff. If it costs an action or bonus action to use the command word, that would be a big deal. Ashton needs to rage on his first turn, and doesn't have the Dueling fighting style.

(Which were all about it being silver, nobody even mentioning the mechanical downsides.) When I watched this episode last Thursday, it seemed crazy to me that they wouldn't consider the ways Chet is specialized for 1h stabby weapons. And the climax of it reveals how BH eventually caused yet another cataclysmic event...with an immortal Laudna or a Hag Fearne or an eldritch being Imogen turned BBEG! *sigh* Toi bad the potential community uproar forever invalids those kind of scenarios...
