I've got axes, but I wanted a solid t-hawk to run in my bushcraft and wilderness survival set-up. That's why I got the CRKT Chogun Woods T-Hawk, and I was really happy with my purchase. This thing looks cool (always a plus), and it functions well. I was honestly pretty surprised at how well it split wood, and when it comes to chopping, it really dug into the trees I was working on. One thing I wanted for this was a sheath, and now CRKT is working on producing one. If you are looking for a nice tomahawk that will get the job done, definitely check this one out.

I have this hawk and it is fantastic, I didn't care for the coating on the handle so I wrapped the bottom 8 inches with leather and cover that with a clear coat, after drying I took sand paper to the leather area, FANTASTIC !!!, No slip at all and better control, Thanks for reading.

I bought mine last fall and as a first hawk purchase after a weekends use of a friends hawk from a different company. Only initial complaint was they hadn't finished sharpening the blade. I had to resort to a file for about an hour before turning to a sharpening puck it was that far from completed. I actually almost retuned it to see if a sharper one was on the shelf at Cabalas in Winnipeg.

Paracord basket weave is always a good wrap to have hold of in winter cold as well as wet conditions too. Hope this helps. That sharpened beard is good for splitting pelvis on the kills of big game to even holding it inverted as in self defense weaponary too. That Tomahawk sure does have a good throwable balance to it and it sticking 83% of the time. At least with my throwing it does. C-ya.

Great Video. I love this THawk. Very tough, very useful all around. I didn't like the gloss on the handle. Got some paint remover, painted it on, removed it, sanded a little bit. Then I wiped it down with Linseed oil. Much better now. I made a leather mask and a removable collar to protect the hickory from getting bashed up as I use it. CRKT Tanto blade (M16-02Z) has been my edc for almost 20 years. It has more than earned it's keep in everything from survival, camping, tactical and anything else thrown at it. I bought 3 extras, still in the box. My point, I trust CRKT. Great products!

Ive known about this tomahawk for a little while and actually bought it after seeing this video. I was impressed with how it seemed to handle for you, BUT the one I got was super dull and waxed coated all over and even on the cutting edge. I spent a good 2 hours scraping off the wax from the cutting edge and working it over with various course stones and finally a fine stone to put a decent cutting edge. If I would have known this $50-$60 tomahawk was going to have the same blunt dull edge as a cheap $15 camp axe I would have saved my money. My advice for anyone looking to buy this or any edged tool, inspect the product in person and don't order it online like me.

That blade is sharpened on the back of the hook part of the blade is because when your in battle you can reach around someones neck and pull it thru and cut their throat open. That's why it's sharpened by the handle.

Hey ET, I have one of these hawks and I love it. I did not like the varnish on the handle so I stripped off the varnish , removed the head and soaked the handle in Teak oil . The handle swelled up and then I put the head on tight. After the handle dried I used fine steel wool to polish the wood. As maintenance maybe once a year soak the head end in oil so it stays hydrated. I drilled a hole in the handle end and put a leather lanyard on it. Use the lanyard to secure the handle to your hands. No slippage. Great vid

I just purchased a Chogun from Amazon (who gave me a credit card, making my purchases easier in conjunction with my Prime subscription......DARN YOU JEFF BEZOS!! (LOL!!!!)) and I like the overall feel and heft of it. I also purchased the leather sheath for it you mentioned (the original video was posted 3 1/2 before this comment) and I like it as a way to protect others from being cut by the blade. It's fairly sharp out of the box but it's not a scandi grind, so I bought a Lansky puck....from Amazon.......and proceeded to grind it down to shaving sharp, thanks in part to including a Smith coarse/fine diamond sharpener for the final edge, as well as a nice strop. The sheath is nice and can be attached to your belt through slits that are cut in the area directly behind where the leather protects the center of the 'hawk. A dangler can be fashioned from leather strips pushed through the holes above the snap strap for the handle and run through the belt slits, then attached to the belt. The snaps don't open readily, likely because they're new, but if you need it NOW and can't deploy it, it's a problem. This is only the case with the snap strap around the hammer head and the shaft; the snap that secures the flap over the blade is pretty solid, and releases pretty well for deployment. A leather loop for the shaft would've been better, I think. The secondary edge at the "beard" end of the blade wasn't exactly sharp on my model, but I attempted to get an edge on it. After trying to do so, I concluded it's likely best left as a false edge of sorts. The tip of the beard of the 'hawk is sufficiently sharp to cut or catch onto a piece of wood to draw towards you if needed, so grinding down the rest of the blade, to me, seems unnecessary. I have yet to test this in the field (it's sorta cold here and I'm working nights) so the jury is out on this for me as far as practicality in my estimation, so we'll see how that works out. Thank you for your review.

I really enjoyed your review of this tomahawk and agree a hammer pole on the back of the head is more useful than a spike when camping. I've been using a tomahawk as part of a system to process wood for the last few years. There is one thing I didn't see you do in this review, the tomahawk head is easily removed and reinstalled on the handle. The head is a friction fit to the handle so just bump the butt end of the handle on a solid surface to remove the head. Reinstalling is just as easy, put the head on the handle and bump the head end of the handle on a solid surface and it should be just as tight a fit as before. If you remove the head it's much more efficient when using it to make feather sticks or other fine work. Being able to remove the head also gives you more options if you are carrying a tomahawk in a pack. I hope this helps.

@DefMunkyYT
@DefMunkyYT 9 жыл бұрын
Over 40 and Fit The handle swells towards the top and the hawk just sits wedged against the swell. It isn't like an axe head where lose is bad. Just turn it upside down and tap the top of the handle on something hard or hold the handle and smack the top with a mallet. The sudden jerk down on the handle will tighten the head. That is totally normal and one of the reasons why a hawk handle is so easily fabricated. No pins, wedges, or complicated fitting is needed, and it will NEVER fly off unless something is seriously wrong.

When you get up to a two handed "Hawk" I don't care what shape it's head is it's an axe. Hawks chop but are lighter than a heartier hatchet. Two hands are Axes no matter how it looks. Great video because it showed the size of it. If I were looking for a true Hawk this would have been too big for my Bug out Bag

Got it today from Amazon. It was literally too dull to cut my palm by pressing and slicing. 15 minutes with file and stones resulted in a shaving sharp edge. The back side of the beard is ground to a slight taper but has absolutely no cutting edge, which is o.k. for me. Lots of wood curls on the top of the head where the handle is pressed on. They are not a problem but are ugly. I will trim them later. I have done a bit of chopping and splitting, made a couple of tent stakes, shaved some cedar bark and so far I am satisfied. I bought this to have something in between my Estwing camp hatchet and the modified boys axe I often carry. The size is just what I was looking for. It should pack or belt carry just fine. Have to make a sheath for it which I enjoy doing. Overall I am happy with this tool and would reccomend it. Just dont expect a finely honed edge or a perfectly fitting handle at this price point.

I agree. No living tree should be harmed. Weither or not its your property, a true bushcraftman knows not to cut into living trees. 1. You are to be in stealth/show no signs of being in the area (meaning no trash or freshly cut down trees. 2. Take only what you need. 3. Just any general decent person wouldn't cut down or into living trees, espcially knowing we are loosing a lot more and more every year, and we need them to BREATH. Yes i will say I'm a tree hugger. why? Because i like to breath for starters, 2. We need the entire ecosystem. Without trees and water, every living thing is doomed on this planet. So these dip s@$#! on here who are being a$$&#!@# to you, can go suck d$!#!!!

How would you compare this to the Cold steel pipe hawk? The cold steel one is half the price as this is. Yet is the performance better then the CS model? The CS Riflemans hawk is too heavy to take backpacking and I want to find a good hawk for that purpose. I must say that the hammer version is way more practical than the spike model.

Considering that the steel tomahawk is a steel hybrid of the Indian stone war ax and the Norse bearded ax, you really can't expect too much in the way of chopping down trees out of it. It is a war weapon that can be used for small camp chores and for busting rib bones and such on large game animals. But it's true intention and purpose is to split skulls and bust through ribs into hearts and lungs, not clear cutting forests. How well does that suckered keep an edge?

Don't drill any deeper then 1/8"-3/16" into the wood. My pattern is two staggered lines of about eight circles on each side of the handle. Don't drill anything near where your palm will be, it will give blisters and cuts for your trouble.

I like how in the teat you chops rotten soft wood that was lacking any grain whatsoever. You also didn’t mention that the handle had a crappy grain. Also the grind on the thing was crappy, it was too fat. You also didn’t touch on the balance of the tool

Say Heah, Yeah, I like a Hammer Poll rather than a Spike. I also like a broad edge. That's why I got my 2Hawks Warbeast, Oh mine also comes with three sharp edges, How Kewl, Huh. For such lite implement I like teaming it up with a compact trio carry. I can team it with a large variety of knives I own. I like teaming my Bravo 1 in 3V. My Fallkniven A-1/H-1, my Ratmandu in the SR101, or my Rodent 5. I can also get the best out of my Blackbird SK-5 with my Tomahawk. I have other's. But I can also use my Traditional Leuku caay with my Bhuku STAK as my neck knife and my Stromeng KS-9/KS-5. But, Yeah my Bravo 1 in 3V is a exceptional belt knife with my Warbeast Tomahawk with y Wicked Tough Saw with the Combo. Yeah, I like the versatility of my Warbeast, I can even use it as a Ulu, Thanx You, Tim.,,.

Fellow 603 dude. You should try your claims ONLY during our winter months if you really want any cred! You tubers are so fake ! With that said, I USE this. The metal can hang but it ain’t splitting anything over 4” of frozen wood. You are welcome for the free “ real” feedback.

Lets be honest man. What do you say?! Its a bad choice for an axe. If you use this for chopping and splitting, there are much better options. If you use it as a throwing axe, well thats another story. You dont use an axe for carving work, like you did. You got a knife for that job. You use an axe for chopping and splitting and the spiked version is better, because it brings something unique on the table. All axes can be used as hammers. The spiked version can be used perhaps as a digging tool, which is actually something unique. Not many have a shovel in their bushcrafting kits and for hammering I could carve a wooden mallet...

why do people use a tomahawk as a ax???
@vShoTzZ25
@vShoTzZ25 9 жыл бұрын
Craig Speirs The term tomahawk is very vague because humans have been using similar axes for thousands of years. A tomahawk is not solely designed for killing people, its one of the best tools/survival tools you can have and its extremely easy and cheap to make compared to a knife or a machete.
