An amazing video. The workmanship is stellar! Gaston, may I ask, what is the glass that you look through when you are using the torch? Is it to protect your eyes from the brightness or is does it allow you to see changes in the metal as they happen....or maybe both? Also, you don't use any flux when soldering? Thank you again for sharing your skills with us!!!

Hey Linda. Thank you so much for your comment. The glasses are to protect the eyes from the bright light emitted by the melting platinum. It's the same concept when you're welding.

I like making cheap aluminum rings and sell them for small amounts of money not skilled enough yet for gold silver rings as they are better and cost to much to risk messing up From experience I can tell you how skilled you are this is not easy and aluminum is easier because it don’t need forging just a mold and a good sand and that’s kinda hard I do some steel rings and I can tell you it’s hard the aluminum rings I sell for 50 cent I donate some of them to I don’t think I’ll ever be that skilled

Very nice work Gaston, you and I work almost identically in 3 stone ring construction. I have made hundreds of 3 stone rings over my 50+ years at the bench. I can see your classic training in your construction techniques. I imagine you apprenticed with a master, perhaps in Europe. I trained in Ireland in the 1960's but moved to the US in 1971. I'm curious about the sanding discs you are using, obviously the are high heat and seem to work well on Platinum, if you feel like shared the brand I would appreciate it. Anyway, I enjoyed watching you work. Regards, Terry Walsh

As intriguing as this construction from bar and flat stock method is, I definitely agree. If I thought it were possible to at least construct portions of the ring in wax and cast it in platinum, that is precisely what I would try first. Metallic 3D printer doesn't work so well for platinum, though, so we're still a bit far off from just being able to 3D print a platinum ring. Maybe it would do for silver or gold, since they melt a bit cooler.
