Back in the 2018 World Cup, there was a very strange discussion in the French media after the French anti-racism organisation LICRA (International League Against Racism and Antisemitism) tweeted that the Croatian team was too white ahead of the World Cup Final. Nobody seemed to think that the Nigerian team was too black, by contrast.
Having lived in Croatia for 15 years at that point, mostly on a Dalmatian island, seeing non-white people was a rarity in my daily reality. Nothing right or wrong about that, just the way it was. It got me thinking about how many foreigners lived in Croatia, and just how homogenous Croatia was compared to other Caucasian countries in the world, and I published my findings on Total Croatia News - www.total-croatia-news.com/li...
This video is the first in a two-part series, and it deals with the data in that 2018 article. The second video (feel free to subscribe to receive it) will follow, looking at the data from 2023, just 5 years later, to see if and how Croatia is changing (spoiler alert - it is).

This isn’t the 1800s anymore, any country that is successful has diversity. Any country that has diversity doesn’t lose their identity or whatever bullshit croatia think it has. Your country has rarely been a contributor of anything important to the world, it has been focused on xenophobia for centuries, that’s why nobody wanted to trade with you or develop anything around you. White Croats is the actually first name your tribe had in 800bc. This days a lot about your “culture”.

The European countries that have a huge amount of non white population are countries that have been colonizers in the past like : France ,UK ,Spain ,Portugal and even Italy . If they haven't had many colonies they have been economically powerful like : Germany,Switzerland,Austria,Denmark and Sweden and have attracted people from all over the world. Now Croatia hasn't been any of that ...in fact Croatia has since joining the EU lost a large chunk of the population to the previously mentioned developed countries . Only know we started replacing those people that left with migrant workers from countries like the Nepal or Philippines .

interesting, i figured perhaps some of the other balkan nations would be as homogeneous if not even more. personally as someone whose lived in both a multicultural nation and currently living in croatia, i can say that i do honestly prefer a homogeneous nation as opposed to a multicultural one, granted i am a croat, so i doubt id feel the same in some other homogeneous nation, but i feel a stronger sense of community and patriotism even, knowing everyone i come across is most likely a fellow croat with similar experiences, likes, dislikes, views etc, makes life that somewhat easier as opposed to constantly being on edge whilst living in a multicultural nation (personal run ins with immigrant gangs, foreigners who dont understand english/croatian, people who outright hate croatians etc). then again thats just my experience, perhaps others feel differently to me, but i certainly am glad that croatia is homogeneous, even if i dont hate multiculturalism.

O dear. There is no multiculturalism. Never it has been. You can have ofc multiethnic great empires or states or countries or civilizations just look at Roman Empire or Kushan civilization, or Switzerland- they must share the same views, the same culture. They don't do what Arabs do in France live in boxes of paper in north parts of Marseille (btw so beautiful city, at least seaside of it) or Paris in ghettoes without job, for example. So, they came and embrace australian lifestyle, they only can came if they work, and not to vote for leftiest parties (those btw always need social war, and complex of social saviours) and not really have a job, or do crime. I think you didn't get my point- Romans for instance. They civilized all the ethnicities and barbarians, and spread their latin and culture, way of life (all the way to late medieval times, latin was present). Or Kushan civilization, Afganistán is not thumb of civilization, ofc. But to make civilization one must have political and military strenght, laws and must cultivate people by allowing them to do fair bussines. So doing irigation system, Kushan did that. @LucaAnamaria

In response to the criticism that Croatia's national football team is "too white": It's not. Croatians are white. The team represents the people. Growing up in multicultural Canada, I have a huge appreciation for other races, cultures, languages, and religions. I will never judge a person or treat them any differently based on the colour of their skin or the country in which they were born. Diversity is lovely because it can make us friendlier, more educated, and more welcoming and open-minded. That said, there are benefits to sharing a common culture. There's a sense of unspoken understanding and of unity. We eat the same foods, listen to much of the same music, and enjoy many of the same books--or at least, we can use them as common points of reference. We take pride in our country in a way that's harder to do when you don't share a collective history or narrative. We celebrate and grieve together. It's more difficult for outside influences to penetrate our inner value structure, for better or for worse. We might disagree with each other on political matters (left vs. right), but the culture we share inevitably brings us back together again--either in the concert hall, at the football stadium, or at the dinner table. We're more cohesive and resilient. People who champion diversity to the point of criticizing Croatia's football team for its whiteness are forgetting two very important points: 1) there's nothing wrong with being white or coming from a white culture (is it not racist to assume that there is?) and 2) if every country were equally diverse in terms of race, we'd all look the same. There'd be no global diversity at all. We'd all live in equally multicultural countries with no unique national narratives to speak of whatsoever. And that can feel very isolating. At the end of the day, people need to feel like they belong somewhere. That's the joy of having a homeland. So, to sum up: I think it's ok for there to be a dominant or majority race or culture in a country and then for there to be a little diversity too to spice things up. 😁 But it works best when the majority and minorities respect each other and don't try to change one another too much. And it's important for the dominant cultural character and values that define a nation to remain intact. People shouldn't come into a country and impose their own cultural values or practices onto the existing culture in order to change or erase it. That's a one way ticket to the destruction of a nation.

@LucaAnamaria
@LucaAnamaria 11 ай бұрын
@@krunoslavkovacec1842 There are people hell-bent on destroying the concept of nations and nationality, so they'll make whatever comparison suits them to try to instil a sense of guilt and shame and get a population to abandon their own heritage in exchange for "progressivism". It has already happened rather successfully in Canada. The culture here used to be predominantly indigenous (First Nation, Inuit, Métis, etc), British, and French. Then other Europeans were taken in, like the Irish, Italians, and Ukrainians. Then mass immigration was introduced, which changed the demographic as folks from Asia, Africa, and Latin America were adopted. This in and of itself was not necessarily a bad thing, though some people take issue with the sheer number of new immigrants. What followed next was troubling: due to Canada's history of colonialism, slavery / racism, and whatever else, authorities basically instilled a sense of shame, implying that Canada was bad, white people are evil, and total multiculturalism (to the detriment of Canada's English-French heritage) was the only road to redemption. Now we live in a universe where our Prime Minister (who certifiably hates the country and its people) wants to introduce half a million new immigrants by 2025, further watering down any common history or values shared by Canadians (even those of us from immigrant / minority cultures who were born here and who assimilated as best as we could). Assimilation used to be a prized mindset here. In earlier times, it was responsible for terrible things, like the residential school system. Later on, it became less ruthless and simply encouraged everybody to get along and get on the same page, identifying as Canadian first, European / Asian / African second. Being Canadian meant loving hockey, eating Timbits, listening to Celine Dion, and most importantly: being kind and open-minded, treating everybody like a human being. This trait was ingrained into our national identity and it is what has allowed people of many creeds and colours to feel a sense of brotherly kinship despite our differences. We don't judge. We don't discriminate. We don't marginalize. At least, that's what we all aspired to. Ten years ago, there was a change in tone and identity politics (making you identify more deeply with your race, religion, or other culture) became more popular and acceptable. People were encouraged to embrace their differences and to downplay their similarities and shared values. They were even encouraged to express their anger at all white people for collective crimes in history. Slowly, the concept of "Canadian" was disappearing. And this trend was getting louder. During the pandemic, when the government started segregating unvaccinated people, Canada completely lost its track record of being friendly and open-minded. Our country turned into something none of us can recognize anymore. The indigenous would say that Canada has always been this ruthless, but most of the rest of us just didn't see it. We weren't affected by it. Now that it's affecting us all, the result is a total lack of national cohesion and the ability of rulers to more easily divide and conquer. Don't let this happen to Croatia.

@@PaulBradbury we don't have to be the whitest country or anything like that, and we already have been influenced by the Austrian, Hungarian, Italian, Turks etc... But that's in a good way, the problem starts at the HEAVY type of multiculturalism that waters down the local people and culture. The current numbers are not to bad as the permanent residences are still low, and many of them are from neighboring countries which is ok. Asian countries are the biggest problem down the road (speaking from experience), as the are completely the opposite of Croatians.. I am a Canadian-Croatian who has travelled to Croatia fourteen times. Cultural life in Croatia is as varied as her regions in terms of dialects, foods, traditions and influence of history - who controlled what part of Croatia and when. Since independence in 1991, Croats have been, as a cultural/ethnic group, building their own knowledge of the past and how they need to be united for the future. Unfortunately, many of her people left and continue to leave due to economic and political reasons. I love going back to Croatia as often as I can. I spend the summer travelling visiting locations from Baranja to Istra to Dubrovnik while also visiting all my relatives between excursions . We are one people who have been under the influence politically by all our larger neighbours over the past thousand plus years. This is why we fight for our culture, language and heritage both in Croatia and those of us Croatians scattered throughout the world. We are proud. Many immigrants from around the world are now moving to Croatia to escape their own homeland for economic and political reasons. These individuals will add to the culture of the region and also learn from Croats how to become an adopted Croatian. As one of the writers stated below, Croatia never had any other colonies nations in the world such as Britain, France, etc. Croatia is very homogenous compared to the over 250 countries and 450 ethnic groups - both foreign and indigenous peoples - that call Canada home. This is why I love both my place of birth, Canada, and my deep roots in Croatia. If it was only easier to get Croatian citizenship as both my parents were born and lived for decades in Croatia; but that is a whole other political discussion. Croatia, love it, and accept it for her beauty and complexity! Pozdrave iz Kanade - Boze cuvaj Hrvatsku!

You meant 99,3% Croatian citizens and not (ethnic) Croats, there are pretty clear statistics about Croats being around 85-90% of the population. Of the largest minorities, people of Serbian and Italian descent are here for centuries, and also Bosniak and Albanian populations are significant although most came in recent decades, but their way to Croatian citizenship might be pretty fast all things considered and many people (especially of I would say Bosniak, Jewish or Rromani descent, but don't be too harsh if I'm not precise there) just declare themselves as Croats when they are asked. But all in all, they're still white even if they are Muslim or Jewish, so from recently militant americanized perspective it basically doesn't count as minority. Nonetheless, considering foreign born population, Croatia (like Slovenia) got a lot of migrants from poorer Yugoslav republics (like my father) and the ethnic tensions were not irrelevant, so even if still white, the immigrant population is basically similar to UK or France, and non-White immigration is booming recently if someone like those from the western media really must make those racist divisions.

Your government needs to encourage its citizens to have babies and have families. White people are not reproducing much anymore. So, they must look to India, China and to Africa where the population is almost comical and they still have high birth rates. If the Croatian government provided financial incentives to help and encourage to have large families then that would help to stabilise your population. Until then, if Croats choose not to have families, the result is mass immigration.

When I met my Croatian wife around 2012 I was noticed by people and I stood out in a crowd being a mixed person. Now we have loads of Nepali, even Indians and also Filipinos, so Croatia is definitely now more brown and I don't stand out that much anymore. I still struggle though finding my wife in a crowd. 😄

Yes, awaiting the official stats from MUP, but according to the Indian Embassy, there are 2500 Indians and 7000 Nepalese, for example. Five years ago, the only county with more than 3500 was BiH. It will be interesting to analyse the stats when they come.
