Earlier this week, I had to attend a boring meeting which ended on what the speaker did at his fishing vacation. So I sat at the back of the room and starting this granny ripple blanket. This is so easy. Thank you.

This tutorial is very professional, and I appreciate that the basic stitch techniques are skipped over. I'm beyond a beginner, and get really annoyed having to fast forward through the stitch technique on many videos. There's a great technique for the border and also tying the ends in. Just finished the Granny Ripple Afghan today. I made it to fit my queen sized bed. Took me about 1 month of crocheting while watching tv in the evenings. I used Fall colors from Red Heart - Warm Brown, Aran, Medium Thyme and Carrot. Looks really pretty. Thanks for the great tutorials.

mary obrien - I think what you're asking about is "chaining up" - it is how you start a row in crochet so that the edges match the rest of the work.

I am SO glad I found this! I have made lap blankets for a long time (I'm really old! LOL) and always had the problem that the bottom row would curl at the peaks- no matter how loosely I did the stitches. Your single crochet back across it makes it perfect- you are a genius! Staci ... My Gramma taught me to crochet, and in return; every time I visited I would make up samples of various patterns for her. If she could hold it, and poke at it, she could crochet it, but she never learned to read "patternspeak". One thing that Gramma always insisted on, is that there is a Right Way To Hold The Yarn. The way she taught me helps with tension [both in your work and in your shoulders!]. Hold your left hand in front of you, with your palm towards your face. With yarn in your right hand, wind the yarn CLOCKWISE around your left little finger [at about the first knuckle, near the tip] Now, lead the yarn in front of your middle two fingers... Between your 2nd finger and your left Forefinger... Behind your Forefinger [counter-clockwise, here]... And come back to the front, with the yarn held taut by the arch of your Forefinger. You'll be holding your work mostly by gripping it AT THE WORK POINT, in your left hand, between your thumb and 2nd finger [I'm holding mine that way as I type] The advantage of holding your yarn this way is that it requires only a slight twitch of your Forefinger to adjust tension, and to feed in more yarn, just twitch your little finger I hope this works for you....

Oh, thank you! My nails are natural, with a shellac polish manicure. Shellac/gel polish allows my nails to grow, and regular manicures (at home or at the salon) really help my hands look their best. Thank you so much for the compliment. :)

The min I posted asking for help i knew that was a silly question. As if you could help when i hadnt included a pic, anyway as im not 1 to give up i kept trying & yes!!!! Finally its laying flat. Simple problem of having foundation row way too tight which of course then didnt allow for any give, so for any other folliwers if this happens to you simply crotchet first row looser. Cheers

Yes, you can always count out your foundation chain using stitch markers, before you get started with the first row.

***** - I don't remember the exact color names of the bulky yarn I used for demonstration in the video. I know the yarn is Malabrigo Chunky, and the gray color is called Polar Morn. You should be able to pick out the other two colors from online photos from retailers.

Very nice tutorial. I had somehow noticed what size crochet hook you were using (besides the fact that it was a Susan Bates® Silvalume® hook); you were using a 6.50 millimeter size K-10.5 hook with the yarn you were using.

I have watched quite a few of your videos and really like how you explain everything. I have only one problem . . . to me you are doing the ripple pattern upside down. Any pattern that I have seen or done you start going up to a point then going down to the valley. Not used to it being the way you are doing it and trying to figure out how to do it the way I am used to. Kind of crazy I know just stuck in the old way of doing things. I still love your work.

I do the two crafts but each has it's advantage. Crochet is faster but has a lot more stitches slst sc hdc dc tr dtr and so on knitting has just 3 slip knit and purl.

I didn't do anything special with the colors...the colors I chose (listed in the video description field) just sort of came out like this. My only goal was to keep the colors from running in rainbow sequence.

Love your videos. I am primarily a knitter also but crochet is much quicker I agree. Would it be possible to do the method where you crochet and do your foundation row at the same time? It's really improved my starting row troubles. I imagine you would go ahead and do the increases and decreases at this time. There are some beautiful samples on ravelry!
