How are you using a 3.5 mm hook on two strands of medium #4 yarn? The recommended hook size for one strand is between 4 and 5 mm. I'm not doubting you, I'm doubting my understanding of what you mean by "medium weight yarn".

It takes some adjusting to but it can be done 🤷♀️

Are you listening to the reason why I'm using that hook size or all you want to do is doubt?

Using a smaller crochet hook creates tighter stitches. This is useful when creating items that you don’t want the normal spacing between stitches. Just creates a tighter look. The recommended hook size on yarn is just that a recommendation. You can change the hook size depending on your need. If you need loose large stitches for a more open concept then you use a larger hook. Hope this helps!
