Hi Leslie, I have used, in this tutorial: 2,5 mm (0,1 inch - letter C ) crochet hook, yarn 100% acrylic, 250m/100g (in US closest DK3), manufacturer "Dora" Turkey. If something is recommended, that means you don't have to strictly respect that. So, if on some yarn written 3-4, you can use even smaller hook 2.5 ( smaller hook-fabric is hardness ). You can also use a cotton yarn, the same size like acrylic (work is beautiful). Kind regards Nina
