The herringbone half double crochet (US terms) is a great stitch for adding just a little bit of detail without being too fussy. Known as the herringbone half treble in UK terms, it's a very simple variation on a regular half double crochet; one extra step is added which, when worked back and forth in rows, gives this stitch a little slant which creates a gentle herringbone pattern. How to: for this stitch you can begin with a chain of any length. Yarn over, insert hook into third loop from hook, and pull up a loop. This gives three loops on the hook. Now pull the working loop under the next loop on your hook (a slipstitch). You are left with two loops on your hook. Yarn over, and pull through both loops. Herringbone half double crochet complete! Work this stitch along your whole chain. At the end of the row, chain two and turn, then begin your herringbone half double crochet stitches in the next stitch. Your last stitch of the row will be into the top of your turning chain 2. Repeat this row as many times as you like!
