What's the advantage or math behind x+y+z instead of x+(yz)? Also at the end of row 1 you state put a hdc, but make a, dc, which is correct?

This is a beautiful stitch, so lacy. I would like to make a baby blanket using this stitch, but I’m confused as to what stitch to use at the end of the rows because at the end of the first row you stated to put a half double crochet, yet you put a double crochet in that last stitch. At the end of the 2nd row, you did put a half double crochet, now which is the correct stitch... a half double crochet or a double crochet? 😊

I don't understand the multiples given at the beginning? multiples of 3 and then add 2 plus 4? can someone please clarify this to me?
