A little tip for stuffing. I used to make handmade dolls. If you buy a roll of quilt batting. I get mine from Walmart. It comes in a roll in a bag. Pull pieces off and shred it with your hands so it resembles regular stuffing. It’s a much sturdier stuffing. You’ll get a firmer feel and it never loses its shape. 👌

The first tip is incredible! I usually don't have any trouble with the rest, but I've always held my breath when trying to close the magic ring--I've accidentally ripped the yarn once or twice because of it ^^' Thank you!

Sometimes it depends on the brand of yarn or even the line of yarn- I LOOOOVE Honey Bunny by Hobbii because it flakes the least for me - Baby Snuggles by Hobbii however is not my fave because it flakes wayyyy to much for me

Here in Belgium we have a company called Veritas. They have chenille yarn called dolce, it's amazing it doesn't really flake. Also for attaching parts like limbs to the body it works great and doesn't flake, unravel or get stuck like other yarns. The only down side is they only have it around fall/winter

Thank you and some extra amigurumi tips for other viewers. First of all, thank you for the magic ring tip! I am using Parfait XL, I've used smaller cheniells and so long as I was gentle and kept the stitches really gentle and loose, I was able to carefully tug the loop closed as with regular yarns. However, this super, super fluffy yarn just would not cooperate. I look forward to seeing if this will work. However an alternative I went to was the alternative to a magic loop, which is just two stitches and stitching into the first loop. I use thread or a smaller white yarn to secure the circle completely closed as is typical of amigurumi. I also found sewing on with real thread or smaller yarn to attach pieces has been very effective to keep the yarn in good quality! Thank you so much, best of luck!

I've found that doing a ch2 and then put the first 6sc in the 2nd chain works better than trying to cinch up that mc. The yarn tends to get stuck, break or shred. Doing the ch2 eliminated that for me.

Thanks for mentioning this! A lot of people do like this way and are very successful with using it - I tend to always have a small gap or I’m trying to hide the bump of the knot so I decided to not delve into this alternative way too much!

Thank-you for the different tips. I’m new to crochet all together and working with plush yarn for the first time. I would love to know though when seeing pieces together if the yarn was to fray/come apart what are you best to do? Or even at any point during a project? I have been very lucky and haven’t had any bits fray too bad on me yet, some have wanted to start but nothing drastic as of yet.

Thanks for all of the info. I enjoy all of your videos. It's nice to see another guy out there who crochets - and maybe you can help. Hello dearly beloved viewer, and real life sister - Yes, I started off having EXTREMELY tight tension as you might see in a doll I made for your son. I actually use a larger hook in comparison to many other plushie crocheters because my tension is already way tighter so there's not as much of a need for me to drop hook size to avoid gaps.

Great tips there. So many "alternatives" to what I'm used to. I avoid these plushy yarn especially the chunky ones because my left arm is so strained just making one amigurumi. Do you experience this or do you hold the plushy yarn differently from other yarn?
@crochetmezaddy

This might have to do with either your tension, your grip or even the hooks handle - I get hand strains from smaller yarns 😅

Great video, I have been looking for tips as I’m about to undertake my first plush toy so this was helpful. To stop yarn from fraying do you do anything to the ends such as strip off the material and tie the inner string together, also do you yarn over when crocheting with plush yarn or do the tighter yarn under?

I was told to use a bamboo hook instead of a metal hook when using the plush yarn. Is that a thing? Also, would you recommend using a strand of worsted weight yarn in a different color so you can see your stitches when using darker colors?

Can you address this question in a video at some point…..I recently made a sock monkey out of cotton yarn. When I went to sew on the ear, I couldn’t decide which direction I should lay the ear before sewing - Inside of the ear down or outside of the ear down. I felt like the stitches showed more on one of the sides so I ended up having to undo one ear. Maybe make a video showing methods on how to attach appendages. Thanks so much. I hope your subs increase because your videos are very helpful

Helpful tips, for sure. 😊 Zack, how well does the yarn-under technique, to close up the gaps, work with plush yarn? Is it much more difficult to see the separate stitches? I've only made one item with plushie yarn--a baby seal hat, and it was white and black--and although it came out beautiful, with no gaps, it was SO hard to see the stitches, so it took away the 'fun' of the crocheting process so much that I never wanted to use plush yarn again.

I don’t think it’d affect the visibility of the stitches but yarn under tends to help with hiding any gaps in the stitching :)

I personally do yarn over because I already have a tight tension and don’t really mind the different - however many amigurumi artists opt for yarn under as it has a “tidier” stitch across all yarn types.

Each of my stitches are long. Where yours seem to be square. I struggle and pull and try to keep tension. I fight with it. When I’m pulling thru the last part of the stitch, my hook catches. I don’t know if it’s the angle or what, but I wish you could make a slow motion video of how the heck you get such perfect stitches. I don’t know if I’m holding the work wrong or tilting the hook wrong. 😩
