First I want to say you look absolutely stunning as a fairy in the woods. But I just wanted to say I love your honesty when you talked about how long it took you to make them. Sometimes I'm hard on myself for not getting projects done as fast as I would like to. I have to remind myself that a lot of crochet videos are edited to cut out all the time in between which makes it seem like they're banging out projects left and right.

The original wings that those were based on were homemade - from tights stretched over bent coat hangers and decorated with glitter glue and fabric paint. The ones you made are SO MUCH nicer. They can be kept and handed down or passed along to friends for ages. Bigger IS better! You don’t grow out of them! The secret is making them lightweight, with enough structural integrity. My mom made me a pair of butterfly wings using a cut hula hoop as the frame when I was little and I wore them for years. 🦋 💗 🧚🏻♂️

Do you think crocheting around armature wire, like around the edges would help it hold itself up for costuming? I’m thinking of making these into like a shawl design, but they’d be great for costumes.
@-Reagan6 ай бұрын
@@torakfett3351 I used that technique for the mini pair of wings I am working on for my little dog (to attach to her halter) and yep! If you go around the edges of the wire it’s very slippery so it twists, but once you have a single crochet or slip stitch all the way around your wire frame, it holds much easier. You can shape it any way you like. I’ve thought of using this technique with freehand crochet to make an enormous witch hat, like Ranni the Witch - a character from Elden Ring.

I love these. Adding to my project list. Maybe if you made the center connecting piece wider & had wires coming off of the edges of the wings that would give you more stability. Also a lighter weight yarn might help.

I read, or saw, a hint about finding the inside end and it said to pull from the right of the ball with the label facing you (or the top if the label is printed vertically) - doesn't always work precisely, as I do still get yarn barf, but it seems to succeed to a reasonable degree

Just an idea, but I wonder if you could take an old backpack and cut the back off (with the straps on it) and kind of sew the wings to that. You could attach them at more places along the center back part to give the wings more support. If not the entire back part of the back pack, maybe just the straps? With the black detailing on the wing you could probably hide where they were attached. Also, if someone wasn't fond of the backside of the crochet on the outside of the wings, showing they could sew a cute fabric on there or add more details, or even just decorate with flowing tulle or something.. Idk, it makes sense in my head!! lol One last thing, when you mentioned the moth flying around, my first thought was "it's probably attracted to a pretty moth on her shirt".. lol

@robynw63076 ай бұрын
The moth was attracted to your top. LOL So weird. I'm currently crocheting a hat (with some ribbon yarn that I was given and didn't know what else to use it for), and the brim is stiffened with wire. I've never used wire before either. It was recommended in the hat pattern to use galvanised wire rope. 10m of 2mm thick gwr from Bunnings was under $6. I will try to remember to let you know how it goes when I get to that stage. Another improvement (though it would make them even heavier) would be to put the black stripes and the white dots on the other side as well. It would look fabulous from either direction then. They are beautiful. Love the pointy ears.
@robynw63075 ай бұрын
Hi Leigh. Just letting you know that the wire rope worked a treat. Keeps the brim of the hat stiffened without showing through the crochet, and is still flexible.

I'm already looking at how expensive music wire is so I can make some of these >_< might be harder to work with but it should end up more ridged and need less weight in total for a nice effect.... though I don't think any of my yarns are suitable, I've mostly been working with cotton chain recently and it's quite heavy, I need to look perhaps at polymer yarns or even going with a much thinner yarn and maybe working up some lace like wings... definitely thoughts to be had

If you ever decide to give up the crafting life, I see a bright future for you in graphic design and illustration. 😂😂😂 Seriously though, you are an EPIC AUNT! Those wings are terrific! And I think you should make another set, add a tiara and wear them every week. Lol One more thing…I LOVE your sewing machine. I can see the brand but is it vintage or a new model? I have a vintage that I am currently refurbishing but yours looks like the 21st century version.
@SkeinSpider6 ай бұрын
Absolutely, who wouldn't want to hire me as their graphic designer after seeing that? 😂😂 It's a new, well new-ish model, but designed to look like a vintage machine (don't know too much about it though as it's my mum's machine). How's the refurbishing going? I have a "proper" vintage machine from a great-aunt that I'd like to get up and running one day but I'm not sure where to start.
@MochaCrochetsandCrafts6 ай бұрын
@@SkeinSpider the refurb is going slowly. It still works but it needs a new electrical plug and cord. I've been stalking eBay looking for one because there are several of those machines for sale on there, but so far no one is selling parts or even an old not working machine I could scrap for parts. If I have to, I have an electrician friend who could probably make one for me, but if I could find an original plug that would be pretty cool. What all does your vintage machine need?
