Crocheting a ribbed sweater

Here is another pullover sweater tutorial for you all! This one is super fun, easy, and quick to make! This ribbed, cozy sweater is made up of four separate pieces that are slip stitched together, so I could avoid sewing. This size of this sweater is easy to adjust! The length of the sleeves can be made shorter or longer and the length and width of the body of the sweater can also be made shorter or longer. The neck portion can also be made longer to create a turtleneck!
This is a great project for a beginner's first sweater! It uses simple stitches like slip stitches and double crochets and simple techniques like crocheting in the back loop only (to make the ribbed effect) and slip stitching parts together. It can also be a quick sweater for more advanced crocheters!
Stitches:
Slip Knot (sk)
Chain (ch)
Slip Stitch (sl st)
Double Crochet (dc)
Materials:
Yarnspirations Caron Cakes in "Raspberry Ice"
- Weight: Medium (4)
- Fiber: 80% Acrylic, 20% Wool
- Approximate total length: 1066 yd / 975 m
- Approximate total weight: 20.25 oz / 575 g
5.0 mm Clover Amour Crochet Hook (Amazon affiliate link): amzn.to/3noE9mz
Yarn Needle
Scissors
Gauge (according to yarn label):
13 sc - 14 rows = 4 in / 10 cm
Dimensions:
Main Panels - 42 cm/16.5" long x 49 cm/19.3" wide
Sleeves - 42 cm/16.5" long x 17 cm/6.7" wide
Tips:
- Add/subtract chains in the beginning to get a longer/shorter sleeve or body
- Add/subtract rows to make a wider/smaller sleeve or body
- The chain 1 or 2 at the beginning of each row does NOT count as a stitch
- Tighten your slip stitches to make the seam smaller and less visible
- Pull your loose ends to the inside of the sweater and weave them in (or leave them hanging!)

I never wear any of the clothes I made whether crochet, sewn, knit. They’re just not as nice as even thrift store clothes and the supplies get expensive. Awkward fitting and stiff. I stick with accessories because they actually are nicer than stuff you can buy at the store when made by hand.

In my opinion sweaters that are crocheted flat and pieces together are quite beginner friendly. I made a stunning sweater and it was just 3 rectangles joined together. The sleeves were tricky but nothing a confident beginner can't handle!

if you use a thinner yarn, the sweater won't be so stiff. It will drape better.

@@kaylaaa6351 I agree, it is cute-- I was just giving info to anyone who would find it useful. I've been crocheting a long time, and I know that crochet clothes are more comfortable to wear when they are not as stiff. I apologize if my comment sounded like a value judgement somehow.

what if you used a larger hook? would it still be as stiff?

@@liyahhbearrxo It would be less stiff than what is shown here, but still more stiff than if a thinner yarn were used (hook size could be adjusted when working with a thinner yarn, in order to get the desired fabric look (shape of cables, etc) and drape by doing a few swatches of the same cable stitch with a thinner yarn along with various hook sizes). The stiffness, if using the same yarn shown here, but with a larger hook, would come from the thickness of the fabric/ribbing. With a larger hook, the stitches would be less compact and close-together than what is shown here, allowing better drape, but the fabric itself would still be quite thick, and thus not moving, draping, or flowing readily (or not as readily as it would if the fabric itself were more thin). Also, the ribs would not look as neat and well-shaped as they do here in this video.

Have you considered using a 100% cotton yarn? It would be much stiffer than an acrylic/wool, but it could work well for you!
