Ever since finding out about that, I could see Hopper as Weldon in almost every scene. Always thought McGill was a bit young for the role as written; figured at the time it was because his character had taken "early retirement."
@Diakron79

@@jennifersman7990 Hopper had the role of Weldon on MV, but he demanded an extra bonus to his salary in the last minute in pre-production. Michael Mann was so infuriated for being jerked around by the antics, he dismissed Hopper immediately, then he was advised to hire Bruce McGill to replace Hopper as Weldon, and history was made. Mann was so electrified by McGill's performance, he and McGill worked together in feature films later on throughout the decades.

Out Where The Busses Don’t Run, possibly the best, if not certainly in the top 3 episodes of Miami Vice. Bruce McGill was outstanding in his role as Ex-Vice detective, so many parts in this ep he comes out from way left field, the ending, with Brothers in Arms running as background even had Crockett and Tubbs not believing what they were seeing. Classic Vice, classic 80’s. love it!

My introduction of him was “Matchstick Men” with Nicolas Cage. That was the first movie I ever saw Bruce McGill in, he is such an underrated actor and easily one of the greatest supporting actors of all time to plays side characters in movies and TV Shows. He was the villain in an episode of “Walker Texas Ranger” with Chuck Norris, he was also in “The Last Boy Scout” with Bruce Willis, he was in “Cliffhanger” with Sylvester Stallone, he was in “Timecop” with Jean-Claude Van Damme, he was in “Exit Wounds” with Steven Seagal. So many he has been in, always enjoyed seeing Bruce McGill pop up in a Movie or TV Show, he is one of those actors you definitely have seen numerous times but can’t think of his name. Great Actor, I remember watching this episode of Miami Vice a few years ago, Bruce McGill definitely made this one of the best episodes of the show and he is absolutely hilarious and entertaining as Hank Weldon, even when he goes crazy and over the top with impersonations 👍

Bruce McGill was cast only days before production began, after Dennis Hopper, for whom the role was written, pulled out. McGill flew from New York to Miami during the middle of the night to arrive on time, and began reading the script without having slept for some time. McGill spent the whole episode doing on-the-money impressions of everyone from Star Trek's "Scotty" to Monty Hall to Edward G. Robinson. Weldon would have been a cool character to see again if he hadn't truly been "Out Where The Buses Don't Run".
