Serious question for Jeremy (as I think he noted that he doesn't do the social media). As a new Crokinole player, when you are shooting, are you looking at the disc OR at where you want the disc to go (either in the 20s hole or hitting another disc, as an example). i have tried both methods - with varying results - and wondering what most people do.

Hi there, I got a question, how I flick my fingers is I hold my index finger just behind the edge of the board (or sometimes push it against the playing surface and then release), and let the edge give me the right amount of flicking pressure for the shot, is this a valid shot (if this makes a little bit of sense :)?

Barb n I are loving your videos, thanks for taking the time to produce these videos! Question, does it matter which side of the disc/button one uses?
@TraceyBoards
@TraceyBoards 2 жыл бұрын
from a rules perspective, no. From a success perspective, there can be a difference in how the button slides convex vs concave. Many of the top players prefer the flat side down. Some will intentionally use it flat side up if they need more drift or 'action' on their shot. Glad you are enjoying the content, lots more to come.

I'm new to Crokinole, and I'm really loving it. A fellow beginner shoots using a technique similar to the one you describe in which the shooter places a finger on top of the disc and gives it a shove rather than flicking it. Actually, this guy puts two fingers on top of the disc while giving it a push. We're just playing for fun, so I just let it slide (so to speak!), but it seems to me that this violates Rule 7e, which states that a disc must be STRUCK by one or more finger. If the shooter is merely sliding the disc forward, it isn't really being "struck". I'd be interested in your opinion on this.
@TraceyBoards
@TraceyBoards 8 ай бұрын
Glad to hear that you’re liking it 😁 and you are right- if you’re playing by national Crokinole association rules, shoving it from the top is not a legal shot. And, so long as it’s house rules you can let it slide, so long as everyone’s happy playing! It’s just something to keep in mind if your friend ever goes to a tournament

Great vid! Your videos convinced me and the wife to take up playing! We got ourselves a 'beginner' board and are having loads of fun! Question: are you allowed to switch hands for shooting? I'm ambidextrous and can shoot with both hands but this means I'm not leaning as much for my offhand shots... is this allowed or an unfair advantage? Thanks for your videos, they are very informative and well done! Also thank you for introducing us to a very enjoyable game!
@TraceyBoards
@TraceyBoards 2 жыл бұрын
We did a video about this a while ago: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5-vioOfmbOgerc Short answer is that there is no rule against it. The fact that you can shoot with either hand is just great for you. you shouldn't be punished for that any more than a top level player should be punished for being able to shoot better than others with their dominant hand. :-)

If I’m reading this right, you’re most likely looking for a disc tray to put discs on before shooting, so there’s no need to pull them from the gutter 😁 traceyboards.com/shop/crokinole-accessories/crokinole-8-button-tray/

Nice tips! I've thought about picking up a blank die, write those different styles (including the spider) on its faces and use it to randomly choose which style each player needs to use on the match. I think it's going to be really fun! Besides that, how do you choose which side of the disc to use? Thanks!

Wait. 1. I'm new to this with a board on order. The sides of the disk are different? Aren't they both flat? 2. I think you covered that thumb method just so you could work in that "Attila the Thumb" pun. 3. I wonder if flicking pucks would be a better approach to playing Sjoelbak too. 4. You don't happen to have a twin brother in Great Britain that posts travel/adventure videos under the Bald and Bankrupt channel do you?

What about using your pinky finger? Lay your pinky on the board and hold it with your thumb just as you would with your index finger and release. It’s more of a sweeping action but it’s something I was trying when I first started. I now use my index finger.

Thank you Jeremy. I only got into Crokinole starting with the huge rush from the Shut Up and Sit Down review in 2019. My first board was a Mayday to see what it was like which cause my buddy to buy a much better board 15 minutes after playing on my Mayday (although there was a 3-4 month wait due to the great crokinole rush of 2019. My second board is a custom designed WoodenYouKnow with a watch face which is in my office. I'll probably get a Tracey in the coming year to replace the Mayday at home and donate the Mayday to someone for further indoctrination. Bottom line is I am very much a novice. While I am a crokinole novice I am a lifelong (50 year old) pool player and engineer so I have always approached the game from a mechanics standpoint. Like with pool it seems the greatest factor to success in crokinole is consistency in your shot mechanics. Nothing is worse in pool than an erratic stroke and bridge. If you are constantly changing it up, don't have smooth motions, and fail to have a stable bridge nothing else will help and this perfectly translates to crokinole. If your shooting hand isn't stable and your stroke consistent you can never, every improve beyond a glass ceiling. As you stated, it all comes down to a stable hand and consistent approach. After playing around I have settled on the system Jeremy Slater showed in his video last year kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJOpmXWcaNVsrck While placeing the disc as shown though I have my index finger extended so as to be aiming as I place the disc. Once the disc is down I place my index finger in the shooting position and remove my middle finger as shown in the video. Another thing I have taken from this is to never move my hand after placing the disc without completely resetting. If I place the disc and find the line is not to my liking I will remove hand and disc from the line and reset entirely. Once my hand is down it should be only a matter of extending my index finger perfectly forward exactly as I do for every single shot. This is exactly how I set up for a shot in pool. As I set down the my bridge hand and the cue I am lining up with my stance. If I do not like the line I see down the cue after entering my shooting stance I DO NOT correct while bent over the ball; I stand up and completely reset. I want every muscle to function the same as it does for every single shot save the amount of power to be applied. That is at least how this very novice and diligently practicing new crokinole player approaches the game. Thank you again for great boards and videos, I look forward to having a Tracey soon.

Justin makes great videos and clearly knows the game extremely well. I watched that video when it came out but quite intentionally did NOT rematch before recording this one. I wanted this to be my take on it and not 'borrow' content from his video if that makes sense. The goal was really to show some options. I agree with all your points about being solid and consistent. In my experience people transition well from pool to crokinole. Seeing angles is so important and comes with practice. I hope we get to sit across from one another some day :-)

As I was reviewing the rules after a different video I was surprised to see “A disc must be struck by one or more fingers.” In the rules. Have you ever played with someone who flicks/strikes the disc with more than one finger?
@TraceyBoards
@TraceyBoards 3 ай бұрын
I personally have seen a handful of people try to strike it with 2 or 3 fingers, but everyone quickly switches to 1 finger since doing it with more isn’t nearly as accurate (if there’s anyone reading this who shoots with more than 1 finger, let us know!)

In my experience, however someone starts playing is what they prefer. Anyone who grew up playing cues hates the idea of finger flicking and vice versa. I don't hate cues but for me it takes away some of the tactile-ness (is that a word?) of the game. I just love the feel of flicking the disc so much ...
