Crooked Creek Road, Pryor Mountains. A Jeep ride from the Wild Horse Range to the Arid Red Desert

Join me for a Jeep journey down from the Wild Horse Range in the Pryor Mountains. I will start at the entrance to the Range and drive down Pryor Mountain road towards the Big Ice Cave. I am trying to outrun the Thunderstorm so some of the images are pretty dark, Once I pass the Ice cave I stop to enjoy the beauty of the wildflowers before continuing down.
I will make a left turn at the Crooked Creek intersection. The first part of Crooked Creek is covered in Pine trees but it opens up to show a very deep stunning canyon, with awesome colors and many caves that can be seen from the road. The road winds precariously close to the edge at times but the scenery is worth it. After winding through the canyons the road opens up to a vast landscape one has to see to appreciate. I make a right turn onto Helt Road where the red rocks a vistas are worth a few raindrops on the Jeep. A field of Cactus keeps me occupied for awhile and I find myself just listening to the birds and the wind. Not a soul in sight.
The road is pretty rough but some of it has been improved so it gives you a bump break for awhile.
In the lower flats the meadowlarks are singing and I can hear thunder in the distance.
I never do get out of the rain but it was a great day non the less.
Remember to leave an offering for the Nirumbee when visiting the Pryor Mountains.

Beautiful spot, I've spent many hours exploring this area. If you follow the two track down from the BLM/Forest Service boundary to the rim of Crooked Creek above the Tillett Ranch, you'll find numerous teepee rings. You can also walk down the trail to the creek below. I've also hiked/climbed into Crooked Creek at two other locations. Challenging to find a route but not impossible.
