My reservation for this just came through from the library so this is perfectly timed. I read a book by Jorge Amado from the 1950s recently and a Brazilian booktuber said this author is one of the contemporary Brazilian writers that matches up to him in quality.

Ooo - I’ve not read Amado, I’ll have to check him out! I hope you love Crooked Plow as much as I did 🧡

This sounds so good. I'll have to wait until it gets an audiobook but I'm excited to read it. Especially with Steinbeck vibes. Also I loved that you color-matched the cover!

It’s so awesome, I hope you love it when you get to it! The colour matching was accident rather than design 😂😂

This sounds like you need to be able to move beyond the tongue bit and you’ll be rewarded. I remember you saying you weren’t impressed at first so very glad to turned out so well, great review Gemma!

100%! Once I saw the bigger picture my whole perspective on the book changed, definitely worth pushing through imho. 🤩

This sounds so strange! Accidently cuts her tongue out?!? A mash between Steinbeck and Marlon James?!? I'm in! Adding to my TBR! Great review.

Yeah, you have to move past the weird opening, but then it’s so worth it!

Good that you liked it! I've always wanted to take a cruise down the Amazon. Does that count for an interest in Brazil? 😄 I just watched the plod. Interesting that you loved 8 Lives. The first 4 chapters were brutal! The Maiden was my other choice from the longlist. Now I'm even more determined to read it after learning that it reads like a historical mystery! 😂 Soldier Sailor does not appeal to me at all... Thank you for the review!!

Who wouldn’t want to take a cruise down the Amazon?! 😂 8 Lives is definitely brutal. I’m just loving the exploration of life as a North Korean citizen. The Maiden is crowd pleaser in my opinion, one that will appeal to a lot of people and is super easy to read.

Your review actually really made me want to read this. And made me want to read Marlon James as well. So much FOMO. 😈 Wasn’t planning on looking at any of the International Booker books but I might give it a try at some point.

I DNF’d your video after reading another person’s comment about cutting. Sorry Gemma. Too icky for me.

😂😂 no probs. I can see that it wouldn’t be a book for everyone. The cutting is quite a minor part of the story though.

@@GemofBooksok so I watched your whole video. The references to Steinbeck troubled me because although I’ve only read Grapes of Wrath in high school I remember it as a dreary book. However, I’m putting this on my “maybe” list now because of your description. Lordy. Cutting the tongue out.

@glendaw5221 oh Grapes of Wrath was awful!! You picked the worst one!! You need to try Of mice and Men and East of Eden!! And thanks for coming back 😘
