Cropdusting- Jeremys' Story

This is a story in a small series of how Jeremy became a cropduster, or as he refers to it, an Ag-pilot.

Your story hit home with me. I’m 31 every since I was 7 I told myself I’d be a ag pilot my god father taught me to fly when I was 12 then cancer took him. Then I started farm work and ended up being a farm manager married my high school sweet heart and got back into flying when I was 24 but then life hit me hard with in fertility we battled having kids for 10 years and she ended giving up on us she left about 5 months ago she said go fly hunter you deserve it to chase your dream. So now I’m taking the chance selling everything I own to chase that dream I thought I’d never get the chance to take again. I want to thank you for sharing your story it’s very motivating for stay safe.

Just minding my business watching random Turboprop videos and suddenly there is a video about Jeremy; my neighbor!! Jeremy gave me and and some young men a tour of his working plane which was awesome. Jeremy shared so much information about what he work he does. Very humble man. Very hard working. Great video!!!

Left my public safety career as I got married, part of the reason I talked her into Idaho was the agricultural aviation opportunities. Keep seeing the air tractors here at the Jerome airport. Hoping to start a conversation when they’re not busy. They definitely run a tight show.

Nothing like the smell of plane burning avgas in the morning! My dad was an ag pilot for 40 years. He said he didn't realize how scary it was until he retired. He also said being an ag pilot was hours of boredom followed by seconds of sheer terror! I've seen him do some really awesome piloting. I loved that man. He was my hero! I have so much admiration for the people who fly ag planes. They are awesome pilots!

33 years old. 13 years now as a emt/firefighter, it was my childhood dream. Over the last 2 years i have found myself growing out of the EMS/public service world and only wanting to fly. Gonna start the PPL in December. Hopefully I can leave this childhood dream and start my adulthood dream! Thanks for the reassurance 🙏. It's never to late!

I have a very similar experience. Flew models from age 10 and at 14 cut grass for a man who let me fly his Super Cub our of a pasture. Years later was building a home built. Worked various engineering jobs in the electronics industry and at 43 packed up the wife and kids for flight school. Flight instructed to build time and at 45 hired on with a regional airline. Like Jeremy said, some days it's "you mean they pay us to do this", and some days it's "you are going to pay me." Glad I was blessed to be able to follow the dream.

Great video. When I was in A&P college, I worked as mechanic for a crop duster operator. It was a very hard, educational and pleasurable part of my career. I worked in aviation for over forty years and would not trade it for anything. The company has flew Stearmans with 1340s and metal wings. So much power!

I’ve flown a desk all my life … retired Accountant/Banker…20 yrs into retirement I got into flying…PA38. I’ve been frightened learning but now I have a brilliant and similarly aged CFI…West Wales. Passed all my exams and at long last solo last week. Had some very interesting landings. Like your anecdotes…subscribed. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

I just recently switched gears on my career path. Please if you are thinking of changing careers … do it ! Please do it. Weather its hard or might put you under financial strain. It will be the best thing you do in life. As long as its something you have always wanted to do you will never work again ! Im doing what i always dreamed of doing . Dont let your dreams expire to where you cant fly or change to your passion.

I’ve been loading for my dad since I was old enough to on -34 thrush. After high school I went and played college baseball and got out of bc of my passion for aviation and the smell of jet a in the am. I dream to be a ag pilot .Went and got my a&p and started taking flying lessons. Got a job at fort novosel working on blackhawks helicopters and lost all my free time. Hope to start back on my dream soon!

Great story, I grew up wanting to be a crop duster. I couldn’t afford the training, so I got into the fire service making it to captain. In those 25 years I always thought “what if “ your story definitely ignited that dream. It’s definitely something I’m going to move towards

Great story, I miss being around Ag flying, got my first taste of aircraft maintenance at 7 years old helping my dad rebuild a wrecked Thrush in the imperial valley in so cal. I always liked watching them spray. they would do a lot of night spraying in so cal.

This was awesome to watch! I was able to start my career transition at exactly 38 years old as well. I'm using the GI Bill to earn my ratings. I started off on the fixed wing side and have earned up to my commercial. Then I switched over to the rotary side of the house in order to pursue aerial cinematography. It's a long shot to get into major feature films, but I can't get there if I don't try. The last couple years have been VERY exciting. I've earned my heli PPL and am currently working on my instrument rating. I flew this afternoon and nailed 3 approaches under the foggles. I can't believe Uncle Sam is paying for all of this. I feel like I won the lottery!!!

It makes me so happy to hear someone who loves their job as much as I do I Wanted to fly all my life started out driving a tractor trailer truck went into poultry business got my license landed a job flying a corporate jet and worked around and got my helicopter rating and now I fly turboprops corporate jets and the County sheriffs helicopter I am a lucky man to live my dreams and still enjoy flying every day at 63 years old time goes by fast live your life with no regrets

My older brother worked very hard in construction from when he was 14. He caught the pilot bug. He bought a beautiful Navion N1102V before he was even done with his license. He had a firewall forward conversion done. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED the time we spent flying. His wife wasn't supportive so he sold his dream. He says it doesn't bother him but i know he's not being truthful.

Great story! I am 66 years old now, and I learn to fly while in high school. I loaded for a spray pilot when I was 17. I learned to fly tail wheel airplanes. The insurance company allowed me to fly the Cessna Ag Wagon C188 from our home base to the field where we sprayed out of.. For the ag pilot it was quicker for him to drive to the spray field and have me fly the airplane to him. Avgas was 67 cents a gallon back then. I was very lucky to get to fly the C188 with insurance today I doubt they would approve a 250 jour pilot to fly a C188. I would load the hoper with water and spray the runway on arrival. I was only a private Pilot so I could not spray for hire. When I earned my commercial ticket, I did spray for my uncle on his farm with his C188 airplane, his ag pilot retired. I flew one season for my uncle and then went on to flying corporate jets and then the airlines and back to corporates. Ag flying was enjoyable but also stressful it is not for everyone! 😁🛫

Loaded 3 AG Cats (2xTurbo Cats and 1xKing Cat) for 3 summers. Loved it and wanted to do it myself, but chose Naval Aviation. Always wondered about the risk of cancer from chemical exposure.

My dad sprayed for 39 years, and didn't die from cancer. Our (American) ag chemicals are the safest on the planet. What goes out of the plane, goes directly onto the food we eat. So, if exposure to the chemicals (as the pilot) causes them cancer, how come we consumers of the crops that the chems are sprayed directly on, aren't all dropping dead from cancer?

My brother did for years and years. Sprayed and dusted all over. Africa, New Zealand, Eastern and Western Canada, even the Solomon Islands. He's retired now. Like you he changed his career too. Use to drive an oil truck. I wish you the best and stay safe.

The big sprinklers that move around and cover a circle are called pivots, you can see him hopping over one in the video. Some of them have a steel cable stretched out on top like a suspension bridge, while others are nothing but a really big pipe. The wire is often hard to see if you're flying into the sun. If you skim the top of one with the landing gear, you'll bounce off. If you hit it closer to the center of the wheel, you'll likely rip the landing gear off or nose straight into the ground. Just like power lines and towers and wind generators, they're not something you want to get too close to.

@@JyClaridge You know, I was actually looking last year to relocate and find a place to take my plane where there's some work. Been flying corn runs almost exclusively now that the farming in my area is all but gone. I considered looking into the area around St. Anthony and maybe contacting someone there, but thought "nah, they probably got all of that covered, I'll look somewhere else". Now that I saw this video, it seems like all I had to do was show up 😂

Got my Private then the instrument 500 hrs then started a commercial on the GI Bill Realized I'd starve if I left my Tool and Die maker Job. Besides I'd make a lousy CFI. If you aren't 110% into Aviation (When Learning) you don't belong in my sky. It not a hobby Aviation is not to be taken Lightly, It will KILL U. GA is doing almost 4 fatels a week in the US alone. That's a Lot of Wrinkled, beyond repair, Aluminum. People are made every day not so much Planes.

A doctor wanting to be an AG pilot, ya right... that would be a dumb move. AG looks fun but it's pretty sucky work. You don't have to be much of a pilot either, it's mostly just stick a rudder (you get good at that). I became a real pilot when I started flying jets in IMC and working like a dog in an 135 operation, Ag was a piece of cake compared to that.

Thanks to AG operators bragging about their careers, I wasted several years in AG when I could have been in a well paying and professional flying career. Once you get out of AG, no one cares if you went back and forth a million times over a field. The flying does little if nothing to get a young pilot into a better flying career. The job has little to do with real world flying other that stick and rudder, which of coarse you get very good at. I tell every young pilot to stay out of it unless they love agriculture.

You're the one with the propensity to sit in fluffy sheep chairs and talk to people on radios while wearing silly uniforms, you should've realized that before you wasted years of your life attempting to enter a field where flying a plane is the most important aspect of the job.
