USSR was the most dominant force during the 80s and seemed almost invincible at that era. They claimed gold in eurobasket 1981 and 1985, World champions in 1982 and Olympic Gold medalists in 1988. Also they were second in Worldbasket 1986 (behind USA), third in Eurobasket 1983 and didn't participate in the Olympics of 1984. This team as you said trully bowed down to Galis. No other player during the 80s made them bow down like Galis did in 1987 and 1989.

There would have been another Celtics dynasty (this is a very old conclusion of Greek basketball fans). Galis wasn't playing defence in Europe but it would have been different with the Celtics. The man was an amateur boxer before taking seriously on basketball and he's still training. In fact, boxing pretty much explains his amazing footwork. An amazing athlete.

Don't forget the context! That USSR team was the team that only 9 months earlier had claimed the Gold in the Olympics of Seoul. They were a true superpower. On top of that Galis beat them practically on his own and he did that NOT on Greek soil. I am just saying that because I often come across ridiculous comments about Galis dominating in only one tournament in his career and because he was playing at home. Its like people don't know anything about him. It's like Galis didn't have 40 or 50 points games literally in every tough court in Europe (Yad Eliyahu, Palau Blaugrana, Split, Milan, Limoges etc). It is like for them he was not 8 times fisrt scorer in Euroleague, 4 times in Eurobasket and 1 in Worldbasket. They are so ignorant that they think Galis dominated only in 1987 when in reality he was dominating up to 37 years old in 1994 when he essentialy retired.
