These videos are from a September 11 1970 half hour television performance Graham and David did for the BBC.
It was right after CSNY had finished their famous...or infamous... four way street summer tour. with stories of epic melt downs and cosmic feedings between them all, the all star endeavor which had only began two years prior had all but imploded on itself.
Fortunately, all of the guys didn't abandon their relationships all together. Neil recruited Stephen, David, and Graham for backing vocals on After the Gold Rush and Harvest. Crosby invited, among other amazing musicians, Nash, and Young to sing and play on his consummate album If I Could Only Remember My Name.
(Interestingly, of all the musicians David invited to play on his album: Nash, Young, Jerry Garcia,Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart,Bill Kreutzmann, Jorma Kaukonen, Joni Mitchell, Grace Slick, David Freiberg, Paul Kantner, Jack Casady, Gregg Rolie, and Michael Shrieve...missing was Stephen Stills)
Of all the members of CSNY David and Graham's relationship seemed to be the one that stayed most friendly. In these videos you can really see how jovial and genuinely humorous they were with each other and with their audience. not to mention their majestic vocal blending. (the two part harmonies, which sound like five part, on Guinnevere and Song With no Words are particularly mind blowing)
If you dig this flavor of Crosby and Nash i would recommend finding a copy of their 10/10/1971 live recording Another Stoney Evening if you haven't already.
------------------------------------------------
David and Graham play Guinnevere from the first CSN album; it's amazing to hear how well their voice blend. obviously the three part harmony on the album is out of this world, but it's almost another thing to hear just the two of them. voices dancing around like footprints on the beaches.
------------------------------------------------
"[Following the break up] Crosby and Nash embarked on a successful acoustic tour accompanied only by their own guitars and piano, captured for the document Another Stoney Evening.
On tour, Nash and Crosby rediscovered the joy they had felt with CSN at first, minus the egotistic in-fighting that had made the last CSNY shows so difficult. That enthusiasm led to the studio for their first album as a duo, a mix of abstract introspection from Crosby and concise pop tunes from Nash prosaically entitled Graham Nash David Crosby, which peaked at #4 on the pop album chart."

@3Nomens I met him in 1973. We were on the same plane from SF to Santa Barbara. I was a twenty year old folk singer and loved CSN and Joni Mitchell. Got out of my coach seat went up to his first class seat and said "you probably get sick of hearing this but I love your music" He said "I never get tired of hearing that" and invited me to sit in the empty seat next to him. We talked until the plane landed. He was gracious and kind to a star struck young fan. One of my best memories.

I agree with all you say, except respectfully , one thing. Happily, another group did have harmonies this good, maybe even better, before CN. They were the original Byrds, with that same David Crosby usually taking the high notes of the three vocal parts. I recommend the Chimes of Freedom, Bells of Rhyney and Eight Miles High in particular for heavenly harmonies.

This is arguably my favorite song Crosby ever wrote. It's just so beautiful and the images his lyrics spark are fantastic. The man did A LOT of drugs, but his genius remained,...and remains, in tact. I'll take Crosby over the other guys, even though they are brilliant too. His songs have this "thing" about them that I can't put into words.

Stephen Stills is definitely the most talented musician of the three, however the harmony of the three (CSN) together gave them the magic of their music. When NASH was with CSN he and Stills were the gasoline powering their music. Sad that Crosby could never control his drug habits and tore them apart. Together they truly had a magic about them.

As a old time musician myself, I am always in awe of this performance. Notice how "fat" their sound is, just two part harmony and two acoustic guitars- but they make a sound so full and lush it could fill a concert hall to the rafters. Mormon Tabernacle Choir, take notes... this is greatness.

I am always amazed by the quality of the audio on these BBC recordings. I've heard performances by Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Crosby and Nash, and others, and the clarity, purity, and richness of sound is incredible--especially when you consider that this intended for broadcast on a television signal and for playback on 1970s t.v. sets that had terrible speakers.

Came here as a result of reading Graham's interview after David's death. He said he now only wanted to focus on the good things about their relationship, referring to this performance and this song as an example. My goodness, this is an amazing duet. Everything about it is stellar. And those early 70s BBC productions were top notch in every regard.

I just have to say, that in all it's simplicity, this is by far the best live performance of any song I've heard, EVER. There are no fireworks, yet none are needed. There is simply something about the timing, control, musical inflection, nuance and above all, feeling. Somehow all of the elements in this just came together in such perfect harmony and concentration, without being too stiff or contrived. You can tell that they were both just "in the zone" on this one. This is pure music.

Besides being lucky enough to catch the 4 Way Street tour in Portland, OR, David also played at a free concert for an environmental cause in Portland in Waterfront Park in the 90s, that also had Jackson Browne, the Wilson sisters from Heart and Neil Young on the bill. David played solo and early in the line up with just an acoustic guitar and sounded as good as he does here. He was really an excellent acoustic fingerpicker too. Last saw him with Stephen and Graham at The Doheny Blues Festival in SoCal in an all electric show. The performance of Deja Vu at that show was exceptional and the best performance by the band at that show IMHO. Forty+ year span for those three shows. Each had some of the best live music I have ever heard. David burned some bridges over the years, but I'm glad his music survives in both analog and digital formats, and in my memory. Hope you are enjoying eternity Croz.
