Todd in the Shadows sent me here. Maybe it's not their best album, but even during his review I could hear how incredibly catchy this song is. Can't stop listening to it.

Yeah I think this is a solid track and at least sounds like what you'd expect out of CSNY, doesn't have overblown harmonies or anything. The rest of it just sounds half-baked or mishandled at best though just off what I heard in the review.

@@thetruthfornow6045 Yeah, I heard live versions before American Dream. I did like NY’s contributions to the album, but I still don’t think they were his best. Just like on the next CSNY record, Looking Forward, Neil’s song were much better then the others. So much so, that his Silver & Gold Live came out rather quickly with the solo versions of the CSNY songs. Very beautiful renditions. Always felt that CSN was more of a distraction towards Neil’s creative momentum than a benefit. Need proof? Look at their output solo or together the past 50 years. Props to Croz, he’s been on a roll lately.

It’s nice watching David Crosby in this video looking sober and healthy, and looking like he has a new lease on life. It’s a shame he fell out with Neil, because Neil Young told him that if he sobered up, he would get the band together again, and he incentivized him to get sober. He did just that.

It must be nice to have talent, fame, millions of dollars, and millions of fans, but life is short. As these old boys move on to the next plane of existence, I pray for their salvation. Eternal life and salvation thru Jesus Christ. Soon, nothing else will matter to them. May God bless David, and Stephen, Graham, and Neil for the immeasurable joy and wonder of their music, which they have given to this world.

I really like the tranquil transition at 2:23 (of 2:05 - 2:42 segment), going from chaotic to serenity. I think it’s that one chime that catches me. The chime chorus at 1:58 and 3:18 is mellifluous, when you plus/minus a couple seconds. Also, such a powerful statement “Don’t know where things went wrong. Might have been when you, were young and strong.” Can’t recall where I first heard this, may have been on one of those VH1 specials about past music or about the 80s. Great video too, I like the revolutionary soldier uniforms.

RIP David Crosby. Died in January of this year (2023). Lived to the ripe old age of 81, which is incredible given his lifestyle and years of drug addiction. He genuinely has a strength that went faaaaar beyond how strong most people are. Being addicted to drugs like heroin, cocaine and alcohol, and managing to get himself off these drugs and break the addiction, was truly herculean feat, he was a superman to manage to do that. Most people can't. Neil Young only agreed to do another CSNY album, this one called American Dream, if Crosby could get off drugs. It wasn't a particularly good album (apart from this title track), but that doesn't matter. Ultimately, this album was the reason Crosby got off drugs, and so it doesn't really matter how good the music is, it saved his life and probably added decades to his eventual lifespan.

In the 1970's, Nixon was the first US President to take a bribe of over $ 1 million U.S. dollars while in office. Nixon resigned and left the White House after Watergate penniless.

I heard this song on the radio today for the first time in 20 yrs. I remember it when I was a kid. I had NO idea Neil Young was part of this collaboration!

Neil Young has a VERY distinctive voice ..... So who did you think was singing the lead vocal ???

I believe Young phased in and out of the Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young partnership throughout the decades. When this record came out, it was abit of a reunion And yea...Neil Young's voice is very distinctive. For many years, I couldn't find it, because i thought it was Young solo...

Great song, great album..awesome bandmates. "American Dream' album includes a lovely bunch of wonderful songs. I don't care about the bad reviews.. this is a masterpiece! Guterman and O'Donnell are ignorant!!

This song is so relevant. This album was criminally underrated. Critics usually are wrong when albums like this are trashed by them when first released, and then with the passage of time, it ends up being "ahead of its time" and underrated. This album (and the song) has gotten more favorable reviews 30+ years later considering what's happening now with COVID, politicians, world events, etc.

Many have bashed this song. But reminds me of all the vets that have been screwed over by politicians right and left. Buncha cowards.

The only time I called a radio station was to complain . When this was released, our local ‘ ILR , Ocean Sound Portsmouth/Southampton , Amazingly amidst it’s constant Michell Jackson & Billy Ocean usual tunes , played this - but the DJ crashed the final third to fade ...having just smoked one my bliss was turned to fury and immediately called the number given out by the Cheesey sod ( I reached the switchboard only ) . After the next record had been allowed to finish , the DJ - with all the Sarcasm and Ire he could muster announced through gritted teeth “ The next time I play American Dream by CSN&Y, I promise to play it all...EVERY LAST NOTE ....” - Victory over the station previously known as ‘ Radio Victory ‘ , which played The Tubes rather than Wham or ABBA. Love from wessexshire 🏴😇🍄 Footnote - Ocean Sound was swallowed up by even cheesier super - wankers , Capital ....
