Todd in the Shadows sent me here. Maybe it's not their best album, but even during his review I could hear how incredibly catchy this song is. Can't stop listening to it.
@gamerguy4252 жыл бұрын
Yeah I think this is a solid track and at least sounds like what you'd expect out of CSNY, doesn't have overblown harmonies or anything. The rest of it just sounds half-baked or mishandled at best though just off what I heard in the review.

Neil also quickly disowned the record too. He called it, “songs for balding baseheads”! His songs were the best thing on it. Aside from the title track, they weren’t his top shelf songs either.

@@thetruthfornow6045 Yeah, I heard live versions before American Dream. I did like NY’s contributions to the album, but I still don’t think they were his best. Just like on the next CSNY record, Looking Forward, Neil’s song were much better then the others. So much so, that his Silver & Gold Live came out rather quickly with the solo versions of the CSNY songs. Very beautiful renditions. Always felt that CSN was more of a distraction towards Neil’s creative momentum than a benefit. Need proof? Look at their output solo or together the past 50 years. Props to Croz, he’s been on a roll lately.

It’s nice watching David Crosby in this video looking sober and healthy, and looking like he has a new lease on life. It’s a shame he fell out with Neil, because Neil Young told him that if he sobered up, he would get the band together again, and he incentivized him to get sober. He did just that.

I really like the tranquil transition at 2:23 (of 2:05 - 2:42 segment), going from chaotic to serenity. I think it’s that one chime that catches me. The chime chorus at 1:58 and 3:18 is mellifluous, when you plus/minus a couple seconds. Also, such a powerful statement “Don’t know where things went wrong. Might have been when you, were young and strong.” Can’t recall where I first heard this, may have been on one of those VH1 specials about past music or about the 80s. RIP David Crosby. Died in January of this year (2023). Lived to the ripe old age of 81, which is incredible given his lifestyle and years of drug addiction. He genuinely has a strength that went faaaaar beyond how strong most people are. Being addicted to drugs like heroin, cocaine and alcohol, and managing to get himself off these drugs and break the addiction, was truly herculean feat, he was a superman to manage to do that. Most people can't. Neil Young only agreed to do another CSNY album, this one called American Dream, if Crosby could get off drugs. It wasn't a particularly good album (apart from this title track), but that doesn't matter. Ultimately, this album was the reason Crosby got off drugs, and so it doesn't really matter how good the music is, it saved his life and probably added decades to his eventual lifespan.

This song is so relevant. This album was criminally underrated. Critics usually are wrong when albums like this are trashed by them when first released, and then with the passage of time, it ends up being "ahead of its time" and underrated. This album (and the song) has gotten more favorable reviews 30+ years later considering what's happening now with COVID, politicians, world events, etc.

When this was released, our local ‘ ILR , Ocean Sound Portsmouth/Southampton , Amazingly amidst it’s constant Michell Jackson & Billy Ocean usual tunes , played this - but the DJ crashed the final third to fade ...having just smoked one my bliss was turned to fury and immediately called the number given out by the Cheesey sod ( I reached the switchboard only ) . After the next record had been allowed to finish , the DJ - with all the Sarcasm and Ire he could muster announced through gritted teeth “ The next time I play American Dream by CSN&Y, I promise to play it all...EVERY LAST NOTE ....” - Victory over the station previously known as ‘ Radio Victory ‘ , which played The Tubes rather than Wham or ABBA.
