From recently discovered tapes in Neil Young's archive comes a new CSNY concert recorded just a month after their debut performance at Woodstock. Contained on a great sounded double album, the gig from September 1969 features the group at their most harmonious and optimistic has just been been released by Rhino and I now have the a chance to review it.

CSNY did down by the river live on a short-lived American TV show called the music scene in 1969. It could be easily found on KZbin. It is so good it makes you wish that they had gone through with recording a studio version of the song.

4 Way Street for having a live version of the Hollies classic “King Midas, in reverse”, it’s worth the price of admission… I got to meet Graham Nash a few years ago, and I told him that King Midas was my favorite song by the hollies and he told me, “I wrote that song you know!”

I believe the recording of Sea Of Madness from the Fillmore is the one used on the Woodstock soundtrack. Neil Young wasn't happy with the actual Woodstock performance so it was replaced.

While this is primarily a Beatles focused channel, the rest of the music world adds layers of flavor, like the icing on a cake. So much of it is interconnected and worth exploring. This album is such an enjoyable listen. I've always been a fan of 4 Way Street, which this shares a similar vibe to. I like this era because the acrimony was still in front of them, which just highlights how amazing the music and vocal blend was. Thanks for the "Beatles breather", Andrew. I listened to the acoustic sides without distraction on my plane ride home yesterday. I thought it was fantastic! I am indeed a discerning die-hard CSN(Y) fan, and Stephen & Neil truly delivered the goods on this release. I've decided to order the LP after seeing this video. I don't really understand the complaints about sound quality and tape hiss. It lives in the music! This is 55 years old! It's incredible we even get to hear this in 2024! I enjoy the musical detours you've had lately on your channel.

I’m a huge fan of Neil Young and I love the CSNY phase of his career. The Fillmore East, while short lived, is the site of so many amazing shows by huge artists of the period. This was indeed a happy period by this group of extraordinarily talented musicians with very, shall we say, difficult personalities. All great songwriters, but their harmonies on songs like Helplessly Hoping rise to the level of The Beatles and The Beach Boys. Wonderful to think that those problematic personalities could find their unity in songs composed for disparate voices coming together so beautifully. Thanks for these forays into “beyond the Beatles” music. They show your love of music and your wonderful articulation of that love in these videos.

Loving this, CSNY are superb their harmonies are amazing and the guitar work off the scale. Re rumours I will say right up front something I have always said that despite being a huge diehard Beatles fan rumours is my favourite album of all time and for me the highest compliment I can give it is that it is as good as any Beatles album, the only album of theirs to do this but there I have said it. If I had to take 10 albums on a desert island there would be rumours and 9 Beatles albums lol. Another great upload, you are spoiling us this week sir!

Seems a little pointless to me, especially considering the ridiculous price. I did buy the American CD set, but that was just a dumb nostalgia thing. I made a display of them for my office wall. I only listened to, "Beatles '65." Once.

CSN&Y is one of my favorite bands. Naturally I ordered it and received it on day 1. It's a must buy!! I was blown away by the quality of the mastering and production of the vinyl. It's just outstanding. It took me back to the old days of live rock and roll venues of the day. The day when tickets were $3.00 or cheaper. My brother and I have sought the best Deja Vu album pressing and believe we have agreed which one it is, but I'll allow you, Andrew, to address that issue another time. 😊

I’m not the biggest fan of CSNY - however, “Country Girl” is stunning. Neil compiled it from 3 unreleased songs from the Buffalo Springfield era and it’s one of the best things they ever did. Neil doesn’t like CG that much himself as he never performed it ever again after 1970 - what does Neil know? It’s only the last 15 years or so that Neil finally realized what his fans really want. I will check this out, they all hated Crosby before he died - and they sadly all had their reasons for that hatred. Now that Crosby is gone it must be a bittersweet moment for them to release this album, but I’m glad they did, because when CSNY were good they were great, it just didn’t happen as often as it should have done.

I picked this up when it came out, and every time I listen to it, I like it more. It sounds great and the performance is very good. I have quite a few recordings from the fillmore east, and they all sound great. Whenever a band would play there, they gave it their all.

Excellent review Andrew. This looks like something I definitely need to pick up. I am unsure if all four shows were recorded, but the two full band tracks that appear on the Woodstock soundtrack LP were taken from this set of shows. In any case, when they were on (having a good night) and together, they were amazing.

I'm going to seek this out and give it a listen! For my part, I really like when you cover non-Beatles stuff, it's always interesting. Branching out is good for the channel, and I must think it makes it at least a bit more interesting for you too. While I understand this is a Beatles' based channel - the Beatles virtually invented the music scene in the '60's and influenced everything that happened during their time as an active band, and a great deal of the music that came later - even music decades down the line. So why not cover other music? Without the Beatles, none of the other stuff would have happened at all - or if it did, it would have sounded very, very different. I find what you guys do to be very entertaining and informative. Keep up the excellent work! I'm looking forward to the "Living in the Material World" review.

What's great is CSN&Y was formed at Peter Tork's house. All of them, except for Graham Nash, appeared on Monkee recordings. Steve Stills went to the Audition for the Monkees. After being turned down, because of his teeth, he went back to his apartment and his roommate thought that it was funny. Stills told him to audition to see how he does. And that's what Peter Torkelson did. When Peter got the call, he left "Buffalo Phish" and they got Nail Young to replace him. Neil Young had auditioned for Motown as he was in a band with Rick James. Rick James was AWOL from the Navy, he was told to turn himself in. Not sure, but David Crosby, in the Byrds in June of 1967 was on a bill with Buffalo Springfield that was introduced by Peter Tork.

Hi Andrew - thanks for the great review. I am a massive CSN&Y fan. Of interest is the "red" Woodstock poster, with the list of bands. The right hand column states the Jeff Beck Group ?? What poster is that? Hmmm - They didnt actually appear at Woodstock, but WOW wouldnt it have been great. That would have been around the Truth album period - that would have been great. I guess the CD is equally great sound?. I recently bought a RED vinyl copy of the Yardbirds "Roger The Engineer" 50th anniversary edition. I also have the 2CD release of the exact same album. The vinyl blew me away, just how great it sounded, I then put the CD on and WOW - that was equally amazing, I just couldnt tell the difference. I don't know what it is about the rock music industry that they continue to fail to release complete editions of an album or event. Four songs left out! (One for each band member? :-) I wonder if there'll be a deluxe version a couple of years from now with one or two more tracks, and then another one with the remaining numbers. That seems to be the industry pattern, and I'd really like them to BREAK that pattern already. They could take a leaf from the jazz industry, especially Mosaic Records, which tend to release complete sets. But then, they couldn't double-dip, and triple-dip, and... I bought the CD version of this album - a single CD with the same 17 tracks as the vinyl. I've only listened to a couple of numbers so far, because I was hoping this would be the concert from which the version of "Wooden Ships" came that appears on the "Woodstock" 3-LP set. It's not, though the arrangement is close, but the version on "Woodstock" is superior, containing better guitar solos and Stephen Stills' scat singing over one of them. (The version they performed at Woodstock, which appears on the "Back To The Garden" deluxe box, is inferior to both, probably because they were still figuring out the precise aspects of the arrangement.) The real reason I haven't listened to the whole album is that there are just so many discs clamoring for my attention right now - old AND new! It's nice that you brought up "4-Way Street", but a fuller comparison might have been useful. There are more songs from "Deja Vu" on "4-Way", and Neil's selections are different ones. The real surprise is that there's not that much duplication between the two sets. There's more political content on "4-Way", specifically "Chicago" from Nash and "Ohio" from Young, along with "Find The Cost Of Freedom". But the version of "Carry On" on "4-Way" is going to be hard to top. It's long, and it's rocking all the way through. I don't mind the occasional deviation from Beatles content on this channel, but it seems that lately, it's been almost one-to-one. I understand that sometimes it's tough to say something new about the 60-plus year career of the greatest band of all time. But it sounds like you've got some real good Beatles content coming, so I'll look forward to that - as well as another request to cover Cream when you do decide to deviate. Good point about the difference in material coved by this and "4-Way." Considering that they came together so quickly as a band, they sure came up with a lot of material fast. I guess having four writers in a four-piece band helps. And I don't mind Andrew's deviations at all. As long as he doesn't stray beyond the '70s, I'm in!

Four Way Street was a very formative album for me as I had just started listening to music as a lifestyle/statement etc. Memorable quote from it by Neil Young - "This song starts out slow and then fizzles out all together." Describes a couple of his best songs!

Andrew, I never saw CSN&Y live but I did see Neil Young with the Stray Gators in 1972 when they were touring the newly-released Harvest album. Fantastic! Hard to believe there was a time when we had never heard Heart of Gold... I have read that there was some trickery involved in the production of the Woodstock soundtrack album, and that the version of Sea of Madness included on Woodstock was in reality recorded at the Fillmore East several weeks later. I have to say, after looking through my collection, I have everything that Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young ever released. Solo and group, from Buffalo Springfield, the Byrds and some of the early Hollies’s material. Graham Nash is the one who held the band together, he was the glue. When the Beatles broke up this was a great group to transition to. Great harmonies and great songs. Neil Young was an added bonus, but not a necessary one. Neil being a pretty selfish person was better as a solo artist, as you can hear from the CSN ‘77 release. Rumor has it that Neil was seen roaming outside the recording studio during the 1977 sessions and wisely the band did not invite him to participate. Possibly due to telling Stephen Stills during the 1976 Still-Young tour to “eat a peach” and promptly quitting the tour, leaving Stephen to finish the tour solo. Hands down this is their best live album, recorded before the rot set in. Great video and review Andrew, totally agree with everything you stated.

I refused delivery of my copy. Many negative reviews prior to yours. And it took two weeks to be delivered from within California - totally unacceptable. I have the CSN four disc box set from the 1990s and it has all the best released, live and unreleased tracks that I believe are superior in quality to this live release.

Andrew sounds like a great live album! One quick fact believe it or not our Beatle George turned down Crosby Stills Nash on Apple Corp. That was a mistake for sure David Crosby came to Apple offices in 1969 to get a record deal a contract but our sweet Beatle George said No what was He thinking!!!! This would have helped Apple as a company!!! The Beatles sure missed Brian Epstein!!! That is the only reason why The Beatles broke up besides Not touring the second and only two reasons!! Those 2 things sped up the decline of The Beatles and Apple because in my opinion if Brian Epstein would have been there who knows Apple would have had a stable of acts including CSN. I love CSN &Y The Beatles made some dumb business decisions!!! I know we're talking about the live album CSN&Y but The Beatles have a connection here! CSN&Y ARE a classic band in the Rock'n'roll hall of fame !! What was George Harrison thinking!!! Thanks Andrew great live album and review!

It was a blessing in disguise. Apple was on shaky ground, to begin with, and considering how the Beatles were robbed of their music catalog, CSN would have never owned their music if they had signed on to Apple. Allen Klein would have gotten a hold of their music, and that would not have sat well with Stephen Stills, who once gave one of his songs away early in his career (the song "Sit Down, I Think I Love You," which was recorded by the Mojo Men, but his version appeared on Buffalo Springfield's debut album). That experience prompted Stills to maintain creative control of his songs in his other bands and as a solo artist, and it was partly the reason why he was rejected for the Monkees besides his "bad teeth." Considering what the Monkees, especially Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork (who got the role instead of Stills), went through with Don Kirshner, it was also a blessing in disguise. As we all know, infighting among the Beatles resulted in their personal lives spilling onto the professional; other artists, such as David Bowie, were also rejected by Apple. James Taylor had the good sense to leave Apple when things were rough and wanted Peter Asher to continue producing his albums after Asher went to WB, though it took Paul to get JT out of his Apple contract. From what I read, one of the reasons that George turned them down was his beef with Graham Nash. Nash had been a member of the Hollies, which rivaled the Beatles musically in the UK, so there was some competition. George wrote the song "If I Needed Someone" for the Rubber Soul (UK)/Beatles Yesterday and Today (US) albums. Unfortunately, the Hollies released their version before George, which caused hard feelings between George and Nash's band. Another reason mentioned was that CSN played Paul's "Blackbird" for their audition, which didn't sit well with John (who was in la-la land with Yoko, to put it mildly, at the time) since it was Paul's song they were playing. The Beatles had 4 strong personalities while CSN, sometimes CSNY, also had 3 to 4 strong personalities, and yes, they all fought; maybe the Beatles saw CSN as a threat to them and rejected them. If Brian Epstein had lived, would he have run Apple?? He would have, except that NEMS would have morphed into Apple and perhaps managed other bands, especially Badfinger, and possibly spared them of the tragedies the band went through. He would have continued to keep the Beatles' egos in check and perhaps kept Yoko out of the studio.

Four way street is a fantastic album but the box set of 1974 live is not so hot. I am really looking forward to hearing this from a golden era for these guys. I was never a fan of their 'electric' live performances, for me it just did not work. As David Crosby once said of their friends in the Grateful Dead - 'They could not sing like us and we could not play like them'. If you want a great live album then it is worth checking out 'Another stoney evening' by Nash and Crosby.

I had 4 way street and On The Way home sounded way better than the Buffalo Springfield version. I am listening to the Filmore on Spotify and all the acoustic stuff is near mono, which is disappointing. The electric stuff is in visual stereo. If you compare 4 way to Filmore, 4 way's stereo is wide on all tracks and has a crisper cleaner sound and the audience is well miked. Listen to 4 Way Street and I think you'll like it better than Filmore

I don't know, maybe I'll have to give it another go, but when I received a promo copy of this a while ago, I couldn't believe how bad the sound quality was. Tape hiss all over the place.I know this was recorded in 1969, but, modern technology should have been able to take it out. And frankly, except for the few live "electric" songs performed at the end, the rest of the performances seem really flat and lifeless.
