After doing some research people have reconstructed this design to include pressure gauges, check valves, and isolation valves. Sadly nothing on KZbin yet. The solar heater concept would be a great addition to revisit their upgraded version of the icy ball. Maybe even automate the cooling with a geo thermal recirculating loop to minimize the cooling tank size with an additional heating tank to run the system continuously when the other is down.

I wonder if we can make solar thermal to cooling campervan. Maybe it s like a glass tube with parabolic inside to gain heat from sun light then the cooling system is able to cool inside car.

@@aanplg I've heard that without the chiller box the temperature of the cold side dissipates rather quickly compared to the 8 hours it claims to cool for. The chiller box is maybe a 2.5 cubic feet. compared to a much larger van with inferior insulation I'd imagine you'd need multiple of them to even have an affect. However adding a manifold with multiple reaction tanks would seem possible.

absolutely love that you presented this, i have been meaning to look into ammonia boil off cooling thing and now here it is. THIS and the 'zeer pot' are the only 2 off-grid cooling methods i am aware of. again thank you filling in this piece of missing info for me.

If you're looking to use this off grid, be mindful of the fact that ammonia will eat copper in the presence of air and oxidation. (it forms Tollen's reagent for the chem savvy.) Other things can be used, but ammonia is prefered in vintage systems because it forms a mixture with water that can get very cold before freezing and was one of the first chemical compounds known. The youtube channel "Applied Science" has a method for doing this that involves rubber bands, if you're interested.

If a Stirling motor is rotated by an external energy source (windmill?), one side will warm and the other will cool; that might qualify as an "off-grid" method to provide actual refrigeration.

There’s a whistle on the cold ball that sounds off when the pressure reaches 250 PSI during the recharge cycle that tells you when the recharge (heating) is complete.

This is appallingly dangerous, to be leaking- and by design no less! Ammonia was not as known back then as it is now, to be so poisonous. It killed many families and workers, and so had to be regulated. Requires a licence now.

I never knew Absorbtion Fridges could work that way. Without the regenerator loop. I have wanted to make one that runs on Ammonia distilled from urine for a while now and this way would be a lot simpler to construct. As well as more practical for a simple concentrated solar rig. No need to use heat transfer fluids of have the focal point aimed at the fridge.... Thanks for sharing! Imagine how cool a fridge that uses sunlight and pee would be!

I love it! My grandparents, then parents, and now I, have the one pictured in your video. They said they always heated it on the wood cook stove. I tried to get it to work, but never got the ball to frost. I have heard the chest freezer type was a more commonly sold.

You can also use parabolic mirrors to cool things on clear nights, using the sky as an Infra-red heat sink by channelling heat outwards into space.

Hey about the RV fridge, why not doing a thermal pannel the size of the fridge, giving all its heat true a heat tube to the flame heating point ? You've got almost all the material !!

pretty much how I made my solar absorption chiller solar lense superheats oil drum that has ammonia filled coils with a return that goes into my water tank , great for our aussie summers and costs nothing to keep my rooms at 25 C ( 38-45 deg without it ..)

You can actually use different working fluids for this besides ammonia, but, for vintage purposes, ammonia is alright. That ball looks like steel. Is it stainless or just cast iron?

50 years ago we had a refrigerator that ran on natural gas. Is this the same RV Refrigeration that you mention in the video? When it finally broke we bought an electric one. Love your videos, going to build a Solar heater for my Green house using your ideas and methods. Thinking about installing a black granite slab inside the collector so it will store and release heat at night. What do you think?

Hi Meno, If it used gas then it was absorption process. We had one in an RV when I was a 3 years old. The slabs are a great idea. Anything with mass works great. We have used 50 gallon drums of water and flat mirrors on the north side to add surface area to the interior. No need for concentrated light with a big area like a greenhouse.

Hi Brian, Just the cold side was placed inside. The heating process usually took place in a water bucket and small burner outside.

They are an antique, no one makes them anymore. I am selling this one for $1,200 (about the cost because it is an antique). A better option would be an RV refrigerator that runs on propane. You just need to know where to focus the light and use extreme caution. More of a novelty as a small fridge + some solar panels and an inverter (120v only) work great.

It does not have the full volatile ammonia needed. This mirror is more than enough equalling 1000 watt equivalent of an electric burner and 9x what the kerosene burner can do. There was no safety valve so I do not like boiling things in sealed containers for obvious reasons. This is an antique and just a test.

Use an electromagnet to rotate a magnetic field and use Gadolinium to generate ultra cold temperature's that can pull Argon gas from a solid state sponge fuel cell and turn the Argon gas into a super cold liquid that fill's an insulated tank with the stirling cold gas cylinders inside the tank. Now design a V-6 stirling cold gas engine with two fly wheel's. Attach automatic transmission to each fly wheel. Rewire two large drum motor's into a electrical power generation configuration replace bearing's with magnetic bearing's and attach generator's to automatic transmission's. Use an organic carbon power cell to start the electrical power generator then have a circuit that flip's on to generate more liquid Argon gas powered off one of the electrical power generator's. Incorporate antivibrstion technology currently being used in Skill saw recipercating saws and add in magnetic bearing's to all moving part's on cold gas engine. Gadolinium magnetic bearing's on all moving part's. You should have an electrical power generator that power itself run for hour's that requires no fossil fuels or lubercant's. This concept can be modified to provide electrical power air conditioning water chilling water pumps for a hydroponic green house. 😊

DAN I see hobo videos not real true hobo they are more scenery tramps than actual hobo. They have cell phone, headlamp,cameras, and worse they encounter freezing literally below freezing temps high winds and just what they can carry to keep warm. I suggested they get an alternator C clamp and make it where the rubber wheel on the alternator can contact the wheel of the train that or the axle maybe a wind generator any of these could work or if they wanted to they could lower a belt in front the axle the belt would be blown back by the wind and they could then lower a magnet pull the belt up to the top and screw the belt on and hold on to their alternator this way. The alternator would recharge a lithium ion battery pack that has 110V AC out and can be used to jump start a car but you really want it for the power source to recharge cell phone lights and camera. I know a lightweight system can be made they are already putting out rechargeable lights that are the size of a AAA battery have portable way to recharge and are over 150 lumens. Dan should decide to take this mission you would have to set up a train hop situation and demonstrate how this can be done maybe some field work of getting near trains and finding the dimensions of a train. The way that would probably work best is the belt around the axle way it would be the safest in that you are lowering the belt in front the axle then use a stick and magnet to catch the belt that belt will sit there and not engage until you used your stick with alternator to get it to spin the moment it starts to spin you can collect power. A cane can serve as the mount for the alternator. You would not be recommending freight train hopping but you would show how people that are already doing this can have more power than they can use enough power to actually dump the extra power into a heating pad strapped to the back to warm core. Sure a train hopper can carry a solar panel but panels have very limited time to be used if you are in the snow and cold you are not going to get a panel to charge your stuff but if you are on a moving train you will have power as long as that train moves and if you watch the video these puppies really move.
