i saw ryan's fancy many many evenings in the strand lounge in st. john's when both they and i were in our prime....1970-74....impossible to describe those songs sung on the elysian fields of youth, health and strength......no recording or video does justice to those wild irish nights filled with lungbursting emotion and fire...the entire crowd sang along with evbery song refrain, love, joy, good cheer and respect all around.

Beyond doubt the most beautiful version of this song. its so lyrical, sad and longing - it gives you the chills. Good job as ever...

Fergus does an excellent job of this song, best version that is close to the original lyrics

i remember going 4 nights a week for 3 years 1971-74 to the Strand Lounge in St. John's to drink Blue Star beer and sing along with Ryan's Fancy in a packed house during the long cold Nfld winter nights. Dennis wasn't singing this particular song then but they sang all the old regulars before they became nationally famous. My only mistake was not going 6 nights a week.

It's fantastic to see Ryan's Fancy performing songs lots of other Irish singers also play, in a different, but simply awesome way.

Hi - One performer of the song attributed the song to Martin Monaghan but, when I looked it up, it looks like the author was actually Michael Considine, born 1850, emigrated to California at about age 20 and died a few years later.. It is said that all of the people named in the song were real. Mary

It's Fergus O'Byrne who is singing here -- there are many versions of this song with lyrics that vary widely.

Denis Ryan's voice is and has always been a a joy to me, me being a displaced Maritimer. He seems to have changed a few of Martin Monaghan's original lyrics, not to disadvantage to them. Mary Redmond
