Hi
I am Rahul Welcome to my youtube channel Civil Notebook.
About this video-
Dosto is video me app logo ko batayunga cross section of railway track ke bare me.
Ummeed Hai Aapko Ye Video Bahut Pasand Aayegi.
Here we will discuss about typical cross section of railway
1. Rail
2. Sleeper
3. Ballast
4. Formation or subgrade
As the main part of railway track, steel rail always act as two parallel lines. In general, steel rail is used to provide a surface for train and guide the train forward. Steel rail also transmits the pressure from locomotive to railway sleepers.
Function of Rails :
Rails are similar to steel girders.
(a) Rails provide a continuous and level surface for the movement of trains.
(b) Rails provide a pathway that is smooth and has very little friction. The friction between the steel wheel and the steel rail is about one-fifth of the friction between the pneumatic tire and a metalled road.
(c) Rails serve as a lateral guide for the wheels.
(d) Rails bear the stresses developed due to vertical loads transmitted to them through axles and wheels of rolling stock as well as due to braking and thermal forces.
(e) Rails carry out the function of transmitting the load to a large area of the formation through sleepers and the ballast.
What is a Railway Sleeper?
Railway sleepers are the components on which the rails are arranged with proper gauge. These sleepers generally rest on ballast and is also called as ties in some regions. The load from rails when the train passes is taken by these sleepers and is distributed it to the ballast.
Functions of Railway Sleepers :
hold the rails strongly and to maintain uniform gauge.
transfer the load from rails to the ballast or ground.
reduce the vibrations coming from rails.
offer longitudinal and lateral stability.
Classification of Railway Sleepers :
Wooden sleepers
Concrete sleepers
Steel sleepers
Cast iron sleepers
Composite sleepers
Ballast is a granular material which is placed and packed below and around the railway sleepers. Different types of ballast materials used are broken stone, sand, gravel, moorum, brickbats etc.
Functions of Ballast :
It provides leveled bed or support for the railway sleepers.
It transfers the load from sleepers to subgrade and distributes the load uniformly on the subgrade.
It holds the sleepers in a firm position while the trains pass by.
It prevents the longitudinal and lateral movement of sleepers.
The subgrade is the naturally occurring soil that is prepared to receive the ballast. The prepared flat surface, which is ready to receive the ballast, sleepers, and rails, is called the formation. The formation is an important constituent of the track, as it supports the entire track structure. It has the following functions.
(a) To provide a smooth and uniform bed for laying the track.
(b) To bear the load transmitted to it from the moving load through the ballast.
(c) To facilitate drainage.
(d) To provide stability to the track.
Thanks for reading.

Sir, I am developing railway track analysis software. I want to show the pressures on the track layers. Can I use the picture of your model's cross-section?
