Railroading and laying tools are two different ways to get your stitches laying straight and even every time. These methods increase coverage with fewer strands, by letting each stitch cover more area than it might want to naturally.

Hey there! This video presents ideas and methods intended to help new and experienced stitchers find new methods of doing their craft. There is no right or wrong way to be creative or make art. If this works for you, I'm glad it helped! If you have questions, please ask! If you don't like this method, please move on. These comments are not a place to tell others what the "correct" way may or may not be.

I had never seen the laying tool idea. I will try that because railroading is going slow for me. I am glad I found this, thank you!

Love your videos. I've been stitching for 50 some years and never heard of railroading before. I tried it and love it! Thank you. I do have a problem I need help with. White floss. I tried every brand I know of and every color I can find, but my white stitches look awful. I'd love to stitch more snow and sheep etc. but ugh! It doesn't nice. Can you help? Thanks.

Thank you for this I start off ok with 2 strands but then you see the twisting in the fabric. It’s hard for me to see the holes so I’m going to try the grid method with pen, I was going to use threads but got confused when they say don’t go over or through the threads. This method is brilliant thanks for sharing

Thanks for your videos, I’m a beginner I just found this site I’ve asked other experienced stitchers but they either don’t get back to me or they tell me they don’t know...even though I’ve seen the things I’ve asked about on their work. The group seems pretty exclusive

Your video has helped me a lot. I use the sewing method and i do a lot of railroading in 14 ct aida. However, when i tried it on 18 ct, my stitches were not looking neat. Your technique solved my problem. Thank you very much!

I came upon your channel because I was looking for information about railroading and laying tools. Thanks for the explanation! Does it matter which way you put your needle through the thread when you railroad? Or should the thread go through from a certain side? Thanks! I subscribed but noticed you aren't doing videos anymore. Hope all is well.

Hi do you have a video doing railroad or laying tools for a 2-hand stitcher (i mean 1 hand on top and one hand on the under the cloth doing stitch and the hand on top assisting the needle from the other hand) i would like to know if there is a way to do railroad or laying tools for 2 hand stitcher like me

I bet you can also use a double pointed knitting needle as a laying tool. I'm cheap like you and already have those!
@MadXStitcher
@MadXStitcher 7 жыл бұрын
+pennylane1084 totally! A size 1 or 2 would probably work best.

Too much pressure an your double ended needle will snap in half. Still cheaper to go to Walmart and buy something. Try lookin in the kitchen house wares. Or Chinese restaurant has chop sticks.

Need Help. When I stitch with 3 strands on 14 count Aida one of the three strands gets progressively shorter. I separate my three strands so they are all parallel when starting a new strand. Does anyone else have this problem or have you puzzled this out and found a solution?

Is it possible to use a laying tool if you're stitching in a hoop? I don't stitch two-handed with a frame setup (no room!).

Yeah, but you might have to practise a bit to find a way that works.

Sure can tell you are left handed. So with the tool you do not need to split the thread

I’m new to cross stitching. When you railroad does the floss get tangled?
@MadXStitcher
@MadXStitcher 5 жыл бұрын
Sorry i missed this comment. Things can get buried by KZbin and shoved in weird places sometimes. No. Railroading actually prevents your floss from getting tangled and twisted. It's a good method to use, but it does make the project take longer because there's more faffing about with each stitch. Same with laying tools.
