Matt, you have to understand. Your government will never be happy if their subjects have even the smallest ability to defy their will. Long guns, handguns, swords, machetes, crossbows, longbows, slingshots, pocket knives. They want you docile and harmless, because all you are to them are sheep to be fleeced by the taxman.

Matt I know you are trying to keep your commentary non devisive and apolitical. I am a conservative and american and I am that way not because of politics but because of my values but in this case with crossbows I really think all of us can be on the same side! As you have said it makes 0 sense based on how few people are injured or killed for more regulation to make sense here. The government has a vested interest in its citizens being allowed to live out their lives in peace without interference.

As always. Instead of trying to address the root cause of an issue politicians like to turn to bans because it makes them look like they're doing something and because it's quicker and easier than really trying to solve whatever problem they're trying to address. Looking into the root cause and trying to address that doesn't look or sound as good, esp. during an election cycle and likely won't yield results until they're long out of office.

@@narusawa74I'd say the general idea of background checking and registering firearms and other dangerous materials (e.g. pyrotechnic and explosives licensing) has reduced the misuse of them when compared to other countries with similar ownership rates. I'm imagining target shooting sportspeople are a pretty peaceful bunch, and I get that licensing/registering the arms of the vast majority is unnecessary, but it does deter impulsive misuse of something potentially lethal by a dangerous minority of owners. I'd say they should only be a form to say you have it, and a statement that you'll ensure secure storage and responsible use of the articles, but it shouldn't stop the vast majority from pursuing those sports.

I am reminded of something the great CS Lewis said, "Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience."

@@thelegendaryklobb2879Honestly, what other conclusion is to draw from this if thought through to the end? Is an authority asserting restrictions due to the certainty that these will improve the well-being of others not by definition morally superior to someone consciously exploiting others for selfish reasons? The entire functionality of this quote and the underlying idea seems to hinge on the quality of 'tyranny' and its connotation of ignorance regarding the emotional connection of the authority to its subjects.
@Cavouku
@Cavouku Ай бұрын
@@robinrehlinghaus1944If "being morally assertive" is the same as "enacting tyrannical oppression for the greater good of the people", then yes, that's more reprehensible than someone who's merely selfish. It's also much harder to combat, ideologically. This is a common theme in fiction. There's the old utilitarianist villain who believes in slaughtering hundreds to save thousands or millions. I was just watching Invincible yesterday, that's the reasoning that the Viltrumites claim to be employing for their galactic empire. There's I, Robot, where the AI tries to confine everyone to minimize their chance of injury or death. There's the anime Puella Magi Madoka Magica, where turning young girls into sailor scouts and then gradually corrupting them to become monsters works as a unique sort of energy that staves of entropic forces that threaten the lives of lifeforms in deep space. Maybe you agree with all these positions, but to me and many others they're sinister in a way plain selfish greed and sadism doesn't quite match.

So every small machinist and model engineer is just a criminal waiting to be arrested, how dare you build a model steam engine or you a psychopath or something??? I have a lathe and a mill and 3D printers etc etc... So making something legal and yet deadly would be easy. Arrested well I would have been at the sports club but I was not going to buy a licence to practice my sport and with plenty of free time on my hands I thought why not make really nasty but legal weapons and sell them to villains... There were fewer than 10 homicides by crossbow from 2011 to 2021 [...]" So only like 10 people have died to a crossbow in the last 14 years. I am an experienced "club level" field crossbow archer who has also trained people in the safe use of crossbows. Attempts / lobbying the Gov about "licencing" and "banning" crossbows has been going on for as long as I can remember, but this current "review" is by far the most concerning as I get the impression the Gov have already decided to impose restrictions, and they are simply testing the population to see how Draconian the restrictions can be without significant push back. It never ceases to amaze me how many anti crossbow types there are, often spouting nonsense such as "there is no use for a crossbow in the UK", or that "crossbows should be banned", whilst bring clueless of the massive crossbow use by club archers and recreational shooters in the UK. I shoot a crossbow in the woods at 3D foam animal targets (it's called "Field Archery"). It is one of the fastest growing types of crossbow shooting in the UK, something I point out at every opportunity. Crossbow field archery is therefore a recognised national sport, with The National Field Archery Society being the greatest supporter of crossbow field archery. I would like to know if the National Field Archery Society has been consulted by the Gov, or even asked to submit a positional statement. I doubt it. I will write to them and ask. As with other shooting sports it is the law abiding and often highly disciplined club shooter / recreational shooter that is punished and made to suffer with the legal imposition of often ill conceived or Draconian restrictions. Going after the low hanging fruit for political purposes only seems to be a sport in itself, but one that only Gov can play). PS, Thanks for making this video, as a crossbow archer, who would like to continue being a crossbow archer, I am grateful to you.

“That the Subjects which are Protestants may have Arms for their Defence suitable to their Conditions and as allowed by Law.” The last part of the law makes it not an automatic right. @@zebatov willam blackstone commented on such, saying the right to keep an bear weapons is a extension to the natural right to self defence and protection. ' allowed by law' i believe relates to the common law, not inferior legalities. Rights can only be added to, not detracted from. Gov: "Great point- let me amend that last question... Should there be further controls around the sale and ownership of blunt objects, dogs, and crossbows?" 😑 When it comes to safety and protectionism, there is always a "next thing" on the list it seems. If the 1.7 or whatever deaths per year from crossbow crime require permitting and restrictions on ownership, then anything becomes fair game because the bar is never too low. The perceived risk by the public or government is always relative to the status quo- so there will never be a point where there isn't a next thing to worry about.

The problem isn't about the existence of crossbows, machetes or even kitchen knives. The problem is about demographics. Unpopular to say, and impolite to talk about in front of strangers, but unfortunately it's the the truth. You won't hear that from the mouth of a career politician, but it's topic which I hear more and more normal, every-day people talking about. This wasn't the case just 5 years ago.

@@liamvickerman4745 mentioning any specific groups, in this political climate, would a foolish thing to do - and quite unnecessary. The overrepresentation of certain groups committing certain types of crime (violent crime using weapons in this case) is well documented.

@@Rynewulf I would imagine my own grandfather, and his brothers, who joined up in '39 would not have taken two steps down the docks towards Europe if he had been given a glimpse into the future. Churchill told them they needed to go off and fight, or else German, not English, would be spoken on the streets of London. After one brief look at the British cities in 2024, they would have said "Nah, you're alright, mate. We'll settle for German. This sauerkraut's not half bad actually if you knock it back with beer."

@@liamvickerman4745 The people coming into your country with no intention of ever assimilating. The people who don't follow your laws, respect your culture, or your country. Immigration is fine when you move to a country, respect their laws and culture, and become a functioning member of their society. That isn't what's happening in most of these cases.

My brother was shot at by someone with a crossbow. He wasn't hit and managed to beat the assailant into submission and flee before the shooter could do anything useful with it. If the attacker had had a hammer or knife it could have been far worse. Signed

Responded. Quite a long and detailed response - like yourself, Matt, I have made crossbows, bows, arrows, broadheads, flint arrowheads etc. This legislation is purely to appease the tabloids and give the appearance of doing something by banning items used by a small percentage of the population, who will hopefully not kick up enough of a fuss to make any difference.

Response posted "As with the "samurai sword" ban before it, this this is a solution in search of a problem The items in question are used in a miniscule amount of crime; banning them will make no difference to public safety (not least because the justice system is unable to deal with the far greater volume of crime committed with far more easily-available items); the justification for a ban seems to be based on no more than "no one needs these"; and the only effect will be to inconvenience those who were not causing any harm, and to divert time and resources away from dealing with far more prevalent crimes."

Filled in the online form. It amazes me in a cost of living crisis where the government thinks it would find the money to do something which is likely to return something which, I suspect, would have a statistically insignificant impact at best. 🤷🏻‍♂️

From the U.S. what odds should we give in Vegas that they won't pay any attention to your comments. Also making flint arrowheads (broadheads) isn't that hard with a bit of practice. So is the making of primitive (Medieval) crossbows.
