I’m 46 and hadn’t DJ’d in years until a friend’s wedding just for fun, using vinyl as I never really transitioned, even when digital was becoming more popular. A guy there said there’s a growing vinyl scene now and gave me his card as he booked services for events from live musicians to DJs. So now I do sporadic vinyl DJ sets (mostly soul, funk, latin grooves and golden age hip hop) for money. Barely got paid a cent in my 20s as often playing out for the love on the underground.

You said something profound in here. You were asked about the hardest obstacle you faced and you said yourself. That rings true in so many facets of life. Relationships, work, school, having a family... everything. The ultimate hack is not letting the doubts stop you from pursuing a goal.

This is one of the best explanations of the industry I've heard about the industry from a Dj/Producers perspective, The point of sending your stuff non stop to labels no matter how many get declined is the best advice.

I would only suggest doing that if you are VERY good and can produce high quality tracks very fast, like 5 a month or something, otherwise you risk ruining a future release with a label.👍

no.."sending your stuff non stop to labels no matter how many get declined is the best advice." NO its spam & its the worst advice..defected etc that he does this too are actually upset about it being spammed..most companies..anyone..dont want..dont respond to spam..but angelo ferrari who did sign his track 1st.angelo is a good dj w/ a decent self-owned label who actually listened to demos & liked the track..sending tracks to a bunch of labels who wont even hear it is a waste of time & energy

Think this is a refreshing interview and really pleased for the guy, from a fellow Yorkshireman, but as someone who has casually DJed over 25 years id make a few observations: His Journey is extremely unique, he has gone from never wanting to, or even touching a set of decks until 4 years ago, to headlining all over the world, the reason for this is because of the ARTIST aspect of him, and NOT the DJ side. For context, I used to play at the same venue as Daley Padley (Hot Since 82), technically, were of the same ability and played the same music, he was getting nowhere, what he did was start producing under that guise and he had a talent there, all of a sudden he started getting big gigs whilst DJs he played with of the same technical DJ ability were still, like me, playing bars ! The music, the EDM change is normal, americans are introduced to EDM, big commercial sounds and most music lovers of any genre over time want to search fo the more underground / hard to find sound, and they tend to move to underground sounds. Frankly, there isnt an 'underground' tech house sound, it's all fairly formulaic and quickly becomes tiresome, hence many DJs move away from it. In my opinion, you cannot learn to DJ by using a controller, some straightforward record box software and tech house, it's the lowest common denominator. Try with some 121 bPM soulful house that has actual chords, percussion and changes in key, actual songs, do it without any effects and loops and try mix that way without key clashing...then you can DJ. Tech house can be mixed by my 10 year old with a 30 minute lesson, hence his point, no one will criticise if you make a mistake. It's nigh on impossible to make it sound bad on CDJ.

It really seems like you know what you're doing and doing it well. I've been into DJing since I was 13 and into production since I was in my late teens and always wanted to make music a success for me but never managed made it happen - I think due to a lack of, direction, marketing knowledge, social media / content, productivity etc. When you're talking about people being bamboozled by the things you do on a daily basis and the legwork / donkey work / graft please could you elaborate and explain what this consists of? Maybe some 'a day in the life of' videos would cover this and be interesting? People often say there's no money in producing music and you only use production to get gigs which is where all the money is. You seem to be saying that this isn't really true. I'm curious to hear more about this.

2:53 I get it! house does sound slow! genres in that range are: (house related) speed house, speed garage, and (techno related) hardcore, psytrance, breaks, and some 2step!! Im someone who likes fast music and slow music (slow = 50-100bpm, fast= 120ish and up), i think house feels slow beause its the slowest fast genre! (under 100bpm your body will subdivide, so you dance twice as fast as the music, wherras in house-dnb etc, you can only dance as fast as the drums)

The "industry" of dance music is a joke. Marketing goons masquerading as DJs. Terms like "content", "shows", and "audience" is all consumerist bullshit. Support local talent and real local clubs, instead of lining the pockets of tour managers, agents, production companies, and "DJs" who see you as a view count or a ticket sale.
@MickMotionMusic10 ай бұрын
just because the local talent can't grind like the international DJ's doesn't mean the DJ's are "marketing goons" and doesn't deserve support. He makes his own music and works hard, the people only give artists ticket sales for as long as their music is good/ the DJ's are relevant. Why should DJ's look at them as anything other than a ticket sale when the entire thing comes from the DJ/artist themselves? they created the value not the audience/fans
