Crossing the Atlantic in a 19' home made boat - The first Class Globe 5.80 Transat race, 2021.

In 2021 I built a 19' boat from a kit. The boat is a Class Globe 5.80, designed for home building, but with ocean racing credentials.
I kind of accidentally entered the first race ever for these boats, the Transat. I never intended to race the boat, but things seemed to fall into place so I ended up in Portugal in November 2021 with a boat that I'd only sailed for about 24 hours before rocking up on the start line of the qualifier to Lanzarote. The main event was the Lanzarote to Antigua leg, which this video is about.
I'm not really a racer, let alone an ocean crosser, but I learnt a few things on the way and, apart from this video being epically nerdy and probably quite boring, I hope it helps my fellow 5.80 builders with lessons learned from my mistakes, but maybe also help inspire others to get their boats in the water.
Take what i say in the video with a pinch of salt, at the time it made sense, and may not now. I'm not a very experienced boat builder or even a great sailor, so a good proportion of what is in the video may well be complete rubbish... :)
For other random boaty stuff (including a build blog for the boat) my site is here: northcardinal....
For more info on the event or the boats, the official Class Globe 5.80 site is here www.classglobe...

That really is the dream, isn't it Tony? That is such a decent boat as well, looking for all the world like a craftsman-built factory boatin every way. I had just stumbled across this video and thought the boat this chap had was especially nicely-made, with a gorgeous finish to it, so when he said he'd built it I was stunned. I love that boat.

Mate I thought all these KZbinrs where pretty rad for crossing oceans in a 30-40’ boat alone, then you come alone with a home made boat, only 19’ long and you ace it. That is truly amazing. All the best mate, John from Canada

Great job and great video, don’t need to apologize for it at all in the description. Congratulations on your first transatlantic. I like these boats, the a cabin looks quite spacious considering the length. A lot of people seem to use jetboil stoves. How long does a cylinder last on a trip like this? Can you share how much you spent on the dried meals… what else did you eat? I can imagine getting tired of them quite quickly.

Not sure it's worth the weight or even advisable in a race but often figured and average trolling motor with dedicated battery and panel should at least be good for 20 or 40 miles a day at best when a person gets becalmed days on end. I'm liking the boat seriously. For the size her cockpit and even below looks roomy enough. I know enough about building boats to envy anyone who's completed one. Way more folks have started a build and never lived to see one finished. One last thing, not sure if I've seen you with any sun glasses but with light colored eyes if I want a horrendous headache all I need to do is be WO glasses and squint an hour or so. Dehydration and sun in my eyes is about the only headache triggers I've had.

In 9th Century AD the Romans gave an ultimatum to the Mauritanians to surrender all the king's treasury and submit to their tyranny. They were freedom loving people and chose to take all the $ they had and build ships. They knew the Romans called the high seas "the pasture of fools", so they know Rome wouldn't pursue them. They crossed the Atlantic, went up the Misssissippi River and settled. Roman coins and Mauritanian artifacts were found there.

I didn't hear anything that sounded like "complete rubbish" (as you warn us in the description). But, as someone who has been at sea in quite a lot of bad weather over my lifetime, I think it's a shame that people new to ocean sailing (along with many who should know better) often misunderstand what the term "breaking sea" or "breaker" implies when used in relation to bad seastates. I have only ever seen true breaking seas in mid-ocean a handful of times, despite having (as one example) had to heave to at least three times during different trips on maxi-sized sailboats across the Southern Ocean. What almost everyone these days describes as a "breaking sea" is just a larger instance of what starts to happen when (what used to be called) "white horses" appear (which can happen in as little as 10 knots), where the peaks of the wave lose their integrity and collapse, spilling down the BACK of the wave. This is an entirely different process from a sea breaking, which is where the crest plunges forward, and crashes down the FRONT of the wave. I think people get quite demoralised when they see large spilling waves, if they think of them as breakers, because we all know the latter are inherently dangerous. Spilling waves pose no additional risk to a vessel, in comparison with their counterparts of the same dimensions which are not spilling. They might be a cause for concern if you happen to be contemplating falling overboard....

@thenorthcardinal
@thenorthcardinal 2 жыл бұрын
I think it was likely more user error on my part. I was trailing just some line to try to make the boat track straighter. If I really wanted/needed to slow down I'd use a small drogue, but can't really tell you how this would make the boat react as I never tried it. If it got really bad and i had plenty of room from any dangers, I'd be letting the boat drift relatively fast downwind (a few knots maybe) on small drogue without any self steering input, which would probably help a lot. I was trying to hold a certain course with the self steering as well as trailing a warp which might have been the problem. Needs more experimenting! :)
