I delivered 92 aircraft overseas during the 1980s, 2/3rds of them singles. Carried the survival suit but only wore it once when the heater failed on the way to the Azores in winter in a Baron. Flying in the suit is a miserable way to live. Always just carried a 2 quart large mouth bottle with a half bar of motel soap for a urinal. Didn't get Loran until 1985 and GPS in 1989. Tanked most of them myself. Longest leg was 20.5 hours in a Cessna 182 from Majuro to Brisbane. Good times! Have fun.

I told him where I wanted to go and he said great, he was going to Pennsylvania and would be glad to stop at Gaithersburg to drop me off. Hey Matt I watched this whole sequence over the Atlantic. Your professionalism when it comes to flying matters is impressive - also how calmly you all dealt with the wing icing and instrument outage. But I'm a sailor (among other things have crossed 2700nm of Atlantic in my own boat) and I have to say I'm disappointed that your airman's safety mentality seems to cut out completely at the waterline. You for example appear to be wearing a basic 150N inshore lifejacket, with apparently no crotch strap and probably no built-in sprayhood. Unless you happened to set down in a perfect millpond, you would be dead in minutes in that rig, long before the 2-4 hours it would take to die from exposure. Open ocean waves kill with spray much more effectively. If your lifevest didn't ride up first. You should have a much more buoyant vest, minimum 190N and even better up to 275N, with a number of features yours lacks (just check out the north sea oil rig floatation device specs to see what the professionals of that region think is suitable). Then that liferaft is a joke. It's two-man, single tube, open. Junk, in anything other than a lake. You trusted three lives to a single, non-reduntant engine with safety gear no more effective than a magic pinky ring. Might make you feel better to have on, worthless in an actual emergency. That's not adventurous, it's un-airmanlike (and definitely un-seamanlike). You should really post a warning on these videos to others not to follow that particular example. Neither a proper ISO 9650 liferaft nor adequate vests are too heavy, nor are they particularly expensive in the context of a $175k+ aircraft. And they might actually keep you alive for a while. Please think about that next time you set out across ocean waters.

Hey Matt, that was cool mate thanks for sharing...! Funny watching you take a pee in the immersion suit - that's why I invested in the "personal plumbing" when we flew to Aus ;)

I love how dude asks his buddies if they want some cashews after he just picked his nose for like 10 minutes

I think he was still checking for blood as he basically knocked himself out putting on survival suit.

Matt: I don't know how you always keep so calm. IFR, no comms, icing . . . eh, no worries.

Haha I've just always felt that worrying's not going to help anything

I was impressed with that as well. I'm sure a lot of it is just experience. Fantastic video!

To panic would be to fail. Always good to keep a calm head, and be prepared

I mean, that's what a good pilot should do; stay calm and think of the reality and not count on falling out of the skies... however, also think through the proceedures, just in case something did happen.

Was that runway at Pease Tradeport long enough for your 210? Haha... I worked there on the ramp for years. That was an alternate landing facility for the Space Shuttle in case of an emergency.

Canadian here! I loved the part where they were speaking French on the radio and you were un-sure if they understand you. They totally do but they love to speak French instead ;)
