It was interesting to see you check the steering, after a rough crossing past entrance island through Dodd Narrow, The bolts came loose on my steering rocker arm. It was a rather stressful situation, as it was only our third time out with our new (to us) boat. We got through it with the help of another boater who was travelling with us. I now have locking nuts! I think it’s great you guys take the time to show some of these safety checks as it’s a great reminder of all the systems which need to be in good working order to ensure safe boating.

I used to work on a paddle boat/cruise ship out of Portland in 1999, went from Portland on Saturday clear up to Lewiston by Wednesday, then all the way back down to Astoria by Friday and finally back to Portland Saturday morning, making stops almost daily for trips to different sights and land marks along the way. Such as the Pendleton Roundup grounds, Snake River Jet boat tour, etc, If im can remember correctly there was a total of 7 locks from Lewiston to Astoria...twas long long ago and theres a lot of malted hops and bong resin built up since so I could be mistaken...but definitely more than one. One of the best years of my life, many great memories, could almost write a book about all of the things i saw and experiences i had on that boat. 1999 was a very good year specially after surviving 2020!! This video was special since we moved to Astoria in 1999 with a river view and moored at the West Mooring Basin with a Golden Star 38 and a 26' custom built Arch Davis designed Jack Tar. We sold our house in 2006 to buy our Nordhavn 40 "Midora". After we sold that boat it eventually became "Cassidy", who you have met. BTW did you know that that boat sank in Alaska waters in 2004. Talk about challenges of maintenance and repairs, but totally worth it and a credit to Nordhavn construction.

Heeled over and down she went with only a scratch to the hull.

Tony Fleming has a video out called "Venture to Idaho". I think you guys will like the trip when you make it. I also think you'll be surprised at how ruff the Columbia gets when the wind starts blowing. There's an old wooden salmon trawler that's been tied up at Arlington for at least one lustrum. The wood in the hull isn't gonna like the fresh water. Seeing the old Columbia River light ship brought back memories. I've got 8mm film that dad took of it anchored off the Columbia back in the 1950's. I was going to tell you to check fuel prices in Oregon before you headed back to Washington but you guys snuck out of port on me!!!(;>)..........................Jim & Rosy(Sea Venture) put me onto you two. How do you determine the timing of your crossings? Are the tides and river tides all on your equipment? And WHY is it the most dangerous one in the world? "perfectly flat" lol
@mvfreedom4 жыл бұрын
We look at wind and tidal changes to determine the time. And this river entrance is the most dangerous because of the high seas typical in the North Pacific, a mighty river flowing into it and the shallow shifting sand bars in this area which all create treacherous conditions if you don’t come at the right time. Over 2,000 vessels have sunk trying to cross it!
@j-maxfromor18954 жыл бұрын
Some call it the graveyard of the Pacific with over 200 shipwrecks. Winter storms occasionally cause 40 foot waves, and even nice days can have sudden 10-15 foot waves, which is why Coastguard has its National Motor Lifeboat School at Ilwaco, just north of Astoria. Checkout Columbia River Maritime Museum and manywebsites for info on dangerous bar.
