Crossing the Grand Couloir

Paul, Liz and Fabio crossing the infamous Grand Couloir. An area with frequent rockfall, this crossing was made some 30 minutes before the rocks started falling.

Despite all misleading comments saying that it is an easy route, it is very highly recommended to refer to local professionals first. It is a known fact that this hike is more difficult than some lucky people or money-making agencies say and that Mont-Blanc claims several deaths every year. Crossing without prior good technical training, sufficient endurance to long hikes, without proper equipment, without experience of mountaineering and walking with crampons poses a vital risk to the person and to the rescuers who will have to intervene later. Rocks now fall almost non-stop from the Goûter corridor of the "normal route" and this is just a beginning of ever more severe incidents ...

Almost all climbers are too late and too slow.... no ropes, no crampons - it is very easy climbing ( not even 2. degree ).... sleep in TETE ROUSSE, pass the couloir around 5 or 6 in the morning to avoid rockfall and too high temperatures..... in addition, never underestimate an easy mountain - you have to have a perfect condition, which allows you to be FAST......, to be fast means to be safe....

Try crossing it in the dark with no safety rope on the overhead cable , i did !

Can anyone enlighten me as to what seems to be the problem with this bit? It seems like an easily walkable slope, especially with crampons. Is it rock fall?

Erm, Google is good! More dangerous in Summer due to rockfall, of course. Most lethal part of MB!!

It is also steeper than it looks. Unless you stop the fall early you will accelerate into rocks below. Happens to a lot of people, presumably because they focus too much on falling rocks.

Too slow, and I wouldn't rope up in a group on that section.

How come? Because stats show that using the cable should save lives. Many people focus too much on falling rocks, they slip and accelerate into rocks below. Roping up also prevents falls due to rocks.

@@phatbengt they mean that roping team members together in that section is a bad idea, and they’re right. Imagine rocks start falling and they’re caught in a spot with no cover. If someone gets hit it could prevent the others from making it across to safety before being able to help the injured person after the rockfall has finished.
