I did press and hold on one of the pedestrian buttons to test it out, and it finally worked when I wanted it to say the name of the intersection.

Just a warning about these. Some municipalities have been known to revert back to the old button on one side if one of these units breaks. So on one side side of the street they might not be any sound.

If someone is Def/Blind they may not hear the button very well but at night if the area that the button is located in a dark unlit area then for someone who is legally blind but still has some vision it would be nice if there were a lighted ring that was around the button. It would be lit in one color, but once the button has been pushed, the light would change to a different color or slowly fade and get brighter over and over.

These types of signals are detestable. There are a few cities like Portland, Chicago's North Side, and others, which have the proper approach, which is to either 1) ALWAYS activate the walk signal, or 2) have a button push cause a walk signal without waiting for a red light. Imagine having a car *required to stop a at a green signal* and wait for the red before crossing on the next green. Can you imagine the furor? Yet that is what most pedestrian signals have pedestrians do. As a frequent pedestrian, I jaywalk by crossing on the green light in these situations, because it is offensive beyond belief to conform to this stupid, stupid, practice.

These are poor bandaids laid over poorly designed overcapacity roads. Places where the city and its engineers are designing for pedestrians and people, deserve safer streets. Also, accessibility is inherently linked with safety. And unsafe road like this is not accessible for anyone outside a car.
