I follow a woman on Facebook, she keeps her land as a refuge for the wild horse bands in northern NM. Well this past week a mama and calf bison showed up. Then yesterday a big male showed up. Not sure if owned and let loose or if they are re-emerging but I thought it was amazing. She got pictures and made my heart swell to see. I would love to see bison roaming the plains again. We live in Colorado and that would be so amazing.

Have you thought about planting a few Engish wallnut trees (Juglans regia)? Their leaves have a smell that humans barely notice but flies and musquitoes hate it. I don't know if they grow in the climate and soil where you live but if it works its a great passive way to lessen the amount of flies in the area.

Diesel has benzene. Maybe vegetable oil, used from a deep fryer(free). DIY, a vertical log wrapped in natural fibre rope ~1" (like a cat scratch post), soak the rope. Bison get a rub and repellant treatment. Help from birds and fly traps. Quail eat a lot of bugs.

Have you thought about setting up bird houses around your pastures to encourage birds to live around the bison? They are said to eat lots of flies.
@juliebaker69694 жыл бұрын
I don't know if are Purple Martins in Oklahoma, but if there are, they are about the best birds for eating bugs. Not only will a Martin eat it's weight in bugs every day, but they tend to live in large colonies. If you can get a Martin colony to make it's home on your farm, your bug worries are pretty much over. I remember very well the big apartment building like Martin houses my great grandma had on her farm, but what I DON'T remember is ever getting bit or stung when I was there. Not even in wet summers when I was eaten alive at home.

Many years ago, my Dad took me fishing and hunting at a place south of Partridge, Kansas. There were several ponds that were fed from natural springs. These ponds were in the middle of a native prairie. In this pasture, there were many buffalo wallows. This would have been an ideal place for a large herd of buffalo. The Ninnescah River was nearby, there were natural springs on the prairie, and the prairie with its tallgrass would have been a good food supply for the buffalo. I enjoy your videos.

Another way to combat biting horse flies, is to put up three or four Purple Martin gourds for them to nest in. Purple martins eat a tremendous amount of flying insects, including horse flies and dragonflies, catching them in mid-air. They are also an endangered species, because of invasive species of birds out-competing them for their natural nesting sites. You can find out more about them on the “Purple Martin Conservation” KZbin channel. Once Brooks gets old enough, she could take care of the Purple Martin nest site. They are nice birds, with a beautiful-sounding song, and very used to people.
@edmartin8757 ай бұрын
I've never seen them nesting in gourds. Probably because most people that provide nesting sites put up those Apartment style of birdhouses.

garlic is one of those things that can cause serious stomach bleeding in farm animals in the daily amounts suggested to reduce flies. how about ear tags that cows wear? Donkeys also make and use dust baths, my mammoths love them. We don’t treat them since we have an organic farm,but we have used fly predators on the areas where they leave most of their manure, and that did work but you have to commit to using it yearly, the longer you use them the better they work since some manage to overwinter. We almost lost a horse to Potomac Fever from mosquitos, the immunization doesn’t work for that particular disease. Reducing pests is a full time job in itself.

When I was a young man about 22 years old. I had only been married around two years. I had a new baby girl. And I was working for a farmer that didn’t pay very well. So I didn’t have the money to invest in anything expensive. I got the crazy idea to put a valve stem in the top part of an old 3 gallon sprayer. The hand pump was broken but it held pressure, and the sprayer still worked fine. I had a portable air tank that I would keep near by. When the pressure in the sprayer got low, I could pressurize it again in less than five seconds. It actually worked great. I don’t know what became of that sprayer, but I used it a lot.

When Colony Collapse hit a few years ago, the experts went looking. They found so many things out there that were affecting the bees they couldn't say which was the major cause. I think they finally decided on the host of bug poisons being the major cause. While the problems are less these days, Beekeepers continue to lose a few colonies every year all across the country. I follow a Beekeeper that has about 40 hives and he loses a couple each year.
