My boy got his first horse at weaning. It was on his 13th birthday. he sold two hogs he raised to buy her. He was able to go to the breeders and work the horse on halter breaking and getting him ready to come home. he slept in the barn outside his stall the whole weaning time. we are talkin October in Alaska. He read books and worked with his horse. It was so good to see the learning and growing for the two years till he could ride that horse. That horse would do anything for that boy. When He sold that horse it was almost the hardest day in his life. The buyer bought him as a professional trail horse and could not believe he was trained by the boy now a man. . She really wanted the name of our trainer but it was just the boy and a love to make his horse the best he could be. Good luck on your journey your doing great.

Hey Dusty! It’s Troy and Lesa. Cora is looking great!! One thing that I noticed that may help you (and you may already know this) is that after you tighten the girth belt you may want to walk her in a circle, then tighten the belt one or two notches. I learned early that they will let some air out of their lungs when you walk them for a minute, then you can make sure that the saddle is tight. Like I said, you may have already heard or know this, I just thought I’d pass on some of my knowledge! I’ve always noticed that Cora is really attached to you and there is definitely a bond and she trusts you. I love the way she follows you around and wants your attention. You and her will be a great team for many years!

I watch the fancy kings horses in London when the corporal in charge comes out to inspect he always tightens the belt !😊

Couple small suggestions. Work equally on both sides of Cora. What you do on one side, do also on the other. Also, when you put the saddle on, take your hand and "tuck" the saddle pad up into the arc below the horn(aka gullet). This relieves pressure on the withers.(pressure much like a too tight shirt across our shoulder blades). Doing a great job. Happy Trails.

Its all up hill but once you think you know it all something will show up that you have been missing. Just never let it discourage you. Cora will be well worth every moment you invest in her care. 🫢😢😮🫶🏻❤️

I do watch several horse trainers, and what you were doing is what I have seen them do over and over again. You are on the right track there Dusty, so keep up the great work! And those Bison look so happy! Thanks so much for sharing this update with us. This has been a great video!

Well you didn't end up with you and the saddle under her, so that makes you better than some people I've seen. You're doing great! And she has grown into a beautiful mare. Very trusting of you, that means everything. Marissa is right, she does look different with a saddle on. ❤
@GreyfyreShelties3 ай бұрын
You did extremely well in saddling her and getting her used to you getting up. 2 points though..I didn't see how you placed the saddle pad.I used to lay the pad 1/2 up the neck, lift the pommel area and slide the pad into place. This allowed the pad to settle above the horses withers. When climbing into the saddle, your weight can spread the saddle bars a bit and cause the pad to press down on the withers. By starting with the pad lifted up off the withers, you protect that vunerable place and ensure the hair is not ruffled under the saddle. Most important-when you set your foot into the stirrup, you shoved it all the way to the boots arch. When getting on a young horse you place just the ball of your foot in the stirrup so if you have a bronc you can easily slide your foot free from the stirrup. Several times you had to move the stirrup to free your boot. Overall, I see someone has trained you well thus far.
@karenweir73103 ай бұрын
Those were the things I observed too! Especially the full boot in stirup… I was holding my breath. Otherwise great progress!! Good job!

Hi dusty I like your bison and chickens and horses 🐎
@afm19483 ай бұрын
Dusty, a couple of things I noticed. When you do your saddling, ensure the blanket is pulled up into the fork and pull the front legs forward to ensure that no hairs are caught in the cinch. When doing up the latigo, toss your stirrup up over the saddle seat or drop the stirrup over the horn. This gives you an easier way to do it up. The biggest thing is a safety issue. When you were dismounting your boot was getting hung up. Go get a wider set and put them on.

I'm going to give you the best advice you will ever get here so pay strict attention. DO NOT PAY ATTENTION TO THE PEOPLE ON KZbin, if you know a professional trainer in your area, do some extensive research on them even if you know them and if you are comfortable with him/her then ask your questions to them and don't think your questions dumb, if you don't know, you don't know, don't put you and that young horse into dangerous circumstances because you don't want to feel dumb. Hoss and females look so happy. I love to see them running and looking so healthy. And what a view. I would not mind living in Colorado. I hope the send us videos of the bison when it snows. I have been wondering if there have been more or fewer flies this summer after the flooding in late spring. Did the floods wash some of the larvae away. Is there any difference in the fly population in the burn unit? Does providing more habitate for certain bird species or birds in general reduce the fly population? For example,do Martins eat a lot of flies? If so, can you install nesting boxes to increase the population? I am guessing that your pond and creek areas are great bird habitats for lots of birds. Any changes in bird populations since burning the burn unit ir burning the raspberry brush? What are the birds that like to sit on the bison and eat the insets that bother them? And I can hardly wait for the net episode about the turkey chicks. If you fenced off the persimmon grove, would that be a good bird habitat for fly-eating birds? Everything about regenerative ranching is so facinating!!!!! Any updates on adding fish to the ponds? Also interested in the world of small family ranches. Are bison ranchers better suited to smaller scale operations than cattle ranchers? And animal processing and product packaging is facinating too. I am intrigued by your pemican ideas. Is that something you could produce at the Ponderosa? How many freeze dryers would it take? Could you process batches and then have your bison sticks packager produce the final products? I can't think of anyone else producing pemican. That's such a unique idea that eould set you apart from other meat stick manufacturers. Bison and persimmon... YUMMY!!!! 🦬❤🦬❤🦬❤🦬❤🦬❤🦬❤

I so love what you and Marissa are doing for the American Bison! I have loved Bison for as long as I remember and I will be 70 in November, so that's a very, very long time. The Bison is an American treasure and should be treated as such. I have always loved horses, too, but I only got to ride in my teenage years and had to pay for the opportunity to ride. I learned on an English saddle, but preferred a Western saddle. I tried riding bareback, which I loved. But as I got sicker, my legs got to weak for bareback. When we got married in our early 20's and bought a condo, riding horses was too much of a luxury. But ooooooo the wonderful memories I was blessed to make on horseback were priceless! I love how you were getting her used to your weight on the saddle. You were so calm and she mirrored your calmness. She is a member of your family unit, and I think she is starting to realize it. Have a delightful life together! With loads of prayers, love and gentle hugs for y'all and all your critters, too, Donna Gulyas in Spring Hill, Florida. 🥰🙏
