You'd be surprised, they make good hard enduro bikes even when bone stock because they weigh nothing, have very plush suspension for motocross bikes and have great bottom end with the help of some good clutch control.

I've owned a YZ for years and I can tell you it's not an enduro bike. Even with much of the modifications listed in the vid, it's still not a match for a full enduro. For one, porting, carb size, and power valve settings are vastly different on a track bike and will never give you the smooth low end power of a woods bike.

YZ250 is the best bike. 2006 and up are all the same. Still the best suspension out there. Even stock it works great in the woods.

My neighbor is in his sixties and from Austria, he rides a CR500 as his trail weapon. He's like five and a half feet tall and can throw that bike around like a bmx bicycle. The trails in western Colorado are steep, rocky and dangerous. Even a hundred meters behind him I'm still getting roosted. I'm always amazed to see him ride

good stuff! i'm just working on a vid now for paul rodden who is turning 80 soon. he's just bought a new dirt bike, riding gear and van to go around the US and canada dirt riding some more... and he's consistently fast. i can keep up but after about five minutes start to get too tired at his pace lol.

I started out riding pretty technical single track on a kx250. I added an 11oz flywheel weight and moose racing makes an easy pull clutch lever that really helped the wrist cramping. Some guards and a skid plate for protection. The suspension was stiff and kick starting the bike in the middle of a technical uphill section was tricky. But it got me addicted to this stuff at a price I could afford. Though I have to admit the first time I went out on my 300 XCW it felt like I was floating over some of the stuff that I had struggled over on the Kawi.
@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro 8 жыл бұрын
the suspension can be one of the real killers hey scott? that moose lever sounds interesting, probably a similar concept to the midwest levers we have used sometimes....
@scottmchone4230
@scottmchone4230 8 жыл бұрын
Indeed. I am certain no matter how many years I do this I will never fully wrap my head around suspension. The Moose design is a similar concept to the midwest. Just think cable. I would say it cut pull down by 30% or more. Couldn't have paid much more that $25.00 US. I ordered the midwest clutch lever after watching one of your videos. I had bent the original pretty bad and needed a replacement anyway so figured I would give it a go. I only tried it for one ride. I never seemed to get the adjustment quite right. It seemed to either always be slipping a bit or always be dragging a bit. Hard to find the sweet spot. I beat the bent one back into submission and put it back on. I do plan on trying it again. One of the other guys I ride with is on practically the same bike as me and he swears by it. Keep the vids coming. Following some fast talented riders and these tips are the only thing keeping me out of the hospital.

That is really interesting.... Surprisingly, my Ol' 1985 YZ490 that I keep teasing about is becoming a pretty good trail/enduro bike. It's not worth anything to sell, so I've just kept modding it a little here, a little there... I put a wide ratio 5 speed in it, ported it and head mod to improve low/mid range torque, and revalved the suspension myself (Still improving to my preference) with twin closed chamber forks off an 09'YZ450F. Riding with my buddy who has a KTM 300 EXC, I seem to be able to manage easily the same obstacles... The biggest problem I have is a hypertrophied R leg and left forarm from kick starting and operating the clutch....lol
@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro 8 жыл бұрын
oh yeah, the cable clutch and no button are a tough combo lol! i wonder if a midwest lever would help? or another guy in these comments said a moose lever worked wonders for the clutch and was much cheaper than a midwest too....

I have an 86 KX500 that I put 05 forks on recently. The bike is long, the head angle is pretty slack and it goes up things off-idle that I would have my 250 singing in the powerband before. I barely give that bike any throttle, just keep it alive and it lugs all day. I love riding the old stuff, even if I do throw on some "fresh" 10 year old equipment now and again. lol

I left the shock alone, it's actually a really neat setup for a stock bike. Where the shock is on a modern bike they used a transfer bar up to a cantilever and the shock is inboard, in the engine cradle. No hanging linkage to beat up on rocks and you can adjust ride height separately of the spring preload. That means I set the spring where the shock works best and then I can tailor the seat height for my stubby legs! lol

I love the motocross bikes because of weight and affordability. These old Japanese bikes are easy to get parts for new and used. I don't think the gearing is a deal breaker either. You adapt quick after riding any bike for some time. Not sure how I feel about flywheel weights either. Have two CR250's one with, and one without--again you get used to how to ride it. Suspension though is a must no matter what you have. Get it set up for your weight and riding and you will be really surprised how all the other things are no big deal.

I converted a 1999 KX250. Worked great. Nice to beat up a used bike while learning, then get a new bike when your skills improve. I used an ultra heavy tube in the 19" tire at 9psi and never had a flat. Can't match a hydraulic clutch though. Tip: get the heaviest flywheel weight. Then if you think it's too heavy, send it back to Steahly and they'll cut it down. ($20.00 US) I went from a 13oz to an 11oz. Perfect.

First, love your vids!! I think I have watched them all at this point and most of the training videos many times. Usually right before I go riding. I took about 30 years off from riding. Yes an old fart! So I am learning to ride again and I bought a 08 YZ250 to start with.There are tons of them and parts and knowledge are amply available.Also, my plan is to never ride any other bikes, then I don't know what I am missing. Besides, my riding still sucks so bad I could be on an electric scooter and the results wouldn't change much!Thanks again!!

Hey Barry, I have a 2003 YZ250 her in the states, which my friends and I have affectionately named 'The Donkey' because when I bought it last spring, I it was in incredibly rough shape (SAE hardware where it should have been metric, suspension was all screwed up, etc). I wanted a steel framed bike over a Aluminum for trail riding and the engines are relatively the same from 2003-2016, so there are tons of parts out there. Anyhow, I ride trails, not that the fruitier equestrian dressage of motorcycle riding which is known as motocross. Here are my mods to date; 9oz flywheel weight Lectron Carburator - totally changed the power delivery to be more trail friendly, added about 10 MPG = 28.2 litres per 100 kms and is easier to tune GT216AA fatty front - really plants the bike and keeps it from washing out your typical armor products, skid plates, case saver, etc. Tall seat It came with an X-ring chain. I'll be doing some more work to it this spring, but I'll eventually hit the wall of "how much more money do I want to put into a 13 year old bike?" Future mods include head work KYB SSS suspension 18" rear wheel with GT230 Steering stabilzer Fasst Co bards I was just riding with a friend last night who picked up a YZ250FX. His bike has as follows; power generation strong enough for a radiator fan and headlight 6 gears wide ratio 18" tire electric start I said the same things to him that you mentioned; the YZ250X needs: 6 wide ratio gears Larger Tank Electric Start Lights 49 more CCs Hydraulic Clutch The issue is with the US market, most people only know Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow with Orange becoming more familiar. Only small handfuls are paying in depth attention to KTM/Husqvarana, Beta, Gas Gas, Sherco, and TM. However, we are starting to see a slight shift to off road riding due to the fact that people are waking up and realizing that their hopes, dreams, and aspirations of becoming the next Travis Pastrana are not grounded in reality. Yamaha has been doing some interesting things over the past few years. Maybe they'll pony up. Personally I'd like to see them go to a steel frame for the X model, like KTM and Beta.

yes it's a real shame the japanese have become so conservatire and mired in the past with their dirt models. i have wondered if it's the continuing sales in the US that allow them to not make changes? certainly in places like europe, australia and canada they are quite rare on the tracks now and everyone has gone euro.... i'd love to see a serious YZ300X with those mods!

Magura hydraulic clutch, 18in rear wheel, devol skid plate, yz250x kick stand, full fmf, the kyb with a pro motion spring and revalve for a 170 pound woods rider, tubliss in the rear, acerbis bark busters. May add a 11 oz flywheel weight in the future. Kept hearing stock, and it’s a ripper. I ride tight technical single track here in east tn. I have thought about throwing in the old wr426 trannys but it doesn’t really need it. This one makes woods set up yz250 number 5 for me and I have loved them all.

Barry, I've been following your channel since the Berg times! Congrats for keeping up the good work! Being a owner of a converted YZ 250, you´ve pretty much summed it up with the pros and cons Barry. The gears are the real problem. At least I change front sprockets from 13t to 15t. About the Hydro clutch, I've fixed the problem by installing these adjustable clutch levers. You can choose 3 positions for the cable end, getting more leverage. Soft as hot butter! A side stand can be really useful too!

Just bought a 2009 kx450f and I am in the progress to convert it to enduro. Around here an registered enduro bike goes for around 3500€ and up, and there isn’t an owerflow on the market. I paid 1300€ for my kx in really good condition and have spent around 7-800€ on mods like; complete lighting (original coil can handle it due to the FI), Skid plate, larger fuel tank, side stand, sprockets, chain and other maintenance stuff. Next on the list of mods to get is; *Either flywheel weight (couple 100€) or a Rekluse auto clutch (1000€) *Suspension modifications (500-1000€) *18” rear wheel, and/or supermoto wheels. So i would be around 3-4000€ into it when I’m done and would have, in my opinion, a much better and all fresh bike than if I would have bought a used enduro bike. Plus, I’ve hade fun and learned alot from tinkering and modding the bike. Only drawbacks would be the tight gearing, no electric start and the biggest; not streetlegal.

Another good video! :-) and I would like to share my experience as a beginner: I come from an enduro Husky 125 and I recently got a KTM SX-F 250 because I'm also doing some motocross riding from time to time. I've been testing a number of brands from 125, 250, 300 and 450 cc, 2 and 4 strokes cross and enduro. What I do most is enduro and almost all my mates have enduro bikes. This is obviously a personal point of view but I love my motocross 250 F. That extra aggressivity for a small 250 works great for me respect a 250 "soft enduro bike" and helps to be more accurate in throttle and clutch control. It probably won't work so well with bigger displacements. The original sprocket was a 48 and I mounted a 52 + a skip plate + strong hands guards + 90/90-21 from and 120/80-19 rear. I'll get Tubliss soon. I still use the stock springs, (I'm about 78 Kg with all the protective equipments). I just use softer compression and quicker rebound for enduro; it's still a bit stiff with mid-size rocks or rounded river stones... but lower tyres pressure, (0,6 bar or 9 PSI), works great for mid-slow riding! With that pressure, I already damaged a tube and hit the rims, so I getting into Tubliss. I'm very looking forward to test my tyres with 0 PSI and winter is on its way in Europe! Hug from Italy - Sicily!

I also ride a yz 250 with very similar mods, i have also changed the reed block to a vforce 3, power valve spring, gnarly fmf expansion chamber with stock muffler and had the barrel shaved 1mm that with some leaner jetting gives more bottom and massive midrange power but a smoother power curve than stock. With the smoother power and re valved suspension makes a very capable bike in the bush. I have also just recently converted a yz 250f for the bush with good results.

on the EnduroGP level these enduro bikes are more like MX bikes (Antoine Meo's winning 350EXCF was made on 350SXF model, not EXCF) but when its coming to amateur riding its better to get an enduro bike. I had many MX bikes and few enduro bikes and im alwys faster in woods on enduro bike than on mx bike, even after conversion. I did almost full conversion for 450 SXF MY2011 to XCF (couldn't make a gearbox conversion), the progress i made with my ride after conversion was big, but now when I got full EXCF enduro bike (350EXCF) its the whole new level of riding. it would need a lot of setup to make the SXF works like EXCF bike.

Some people find that after a converted MX, it cost as much as a dedicated enduro? Wrong. Not if you look in the right places/get the right bike. Is it worth it to convert a MX? Yes, if you get the right bike. Get an old steel-framed YZ. Like a 2000-2002. SUPER, SUPER fucking cheap. You don't gotta worry about close-ratio gearing, because it's compatible with the WR's if you swap it, same with the rear wheel, I believe. Throw in a flywheel weight, and some lights if you want them. And bam. You have a bike that can do anything any fuckin' KTM can do, and it all cost you $3000 or less. And it has the most support for woods riding, compared to all the other MX's.

I own an older YZ250 and finally converted it to a woods bike a few years ago (pipe, weight, suspension, chain, steel sprockets, and few other changes), and I have to agree that you're much better off performance-wise getting a full enduro bike. Mine does fairly well and can tractor up most technical stuff (mostly due to 13/50 sprockets), but it's not the easiest bike to ride compared to others (which, since I need the exercise, suits me). I also don't have the advantage of that lower 1st or higher 5th gear. The differences between track and enduro bike engines (especially 2-strokes) are the porting, timing of the power valve and spark, and carb size (lower rpms require smaller carbs in order to maintain intake velocity). Until those changes are made, a track bike will never equal the low-end grunt of something like your 300 Beta. Also, I think most will find that there's little weight difference by the time many of those changes are made.

a good summary mark. if i had the money and storage room i'd probably like to have one as a spare bike and just do the budget mods... but beyond that the price and weight do creep up too much.

I had a converted yz250 for a long time that was used as a trail/xtraining bike. It was a love and hate relationship. I was never entirely happy with the gearing, there was always a compromise, too short for this, too tall for that ect... Not to mention the resell value of a $2000 bike that you put $2000 into is still pretty much $2000

I'm am also really considering doing this to a 2 stroke motocross bike. I worked out a used yz250 for good price some smart mods here and there and it's already half the price of a beta but if you buy used and go the money is no option route it which includes head porting and bigbore for 298c you are 1000 dollars less than a beta 250. I am really wanting to buy a used one and use it in local enduro but I'm going the smarter route and saving the money and building a shed

Legally you are totally correct. But with LEDs and small lithium batteries these days, plus the very short tech inspections required.. you could actually get by without an actual stator/charging system. As long as you didn't run at night forcing you use use a 30w headlight, you could actually run all day with blinkers and tail light without a stator if you had a decent small battery. Just something to keep in mind.

OK, I have been waiting 18 hours questionning myself if i was going to mention it or not. But I can't keep this terrible secret anymore. The pull of my hydraulic clutch is not really lighter than all the cable clutches I had before and I sincerely hate the infinite astronomical gap between the first and second gear on my older 250 Exc (2005)... so ''hydraulic clutch'' and ''wide ratio'' are very difficult concept for me to grasp. I never had any use for my front light either, my bike is too heavy and I don't care about the rear stop light not working. I can't even intoxicate myself with 20/1 castor oil like in the good ol' days... On the other hand, I must admit that I really like my anodized oil drain plug. Am I a real enduro guy, doctor? Or simply an ex old school motocross ape fitted with a Harley pea size brain?
@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro 8 жыл бұрын
within every dirt rider lurks the motocross ape fitted with a Harley pea size brain. :) it's true there are some cable clutches that can be fairly light, but the ones i have tried have been hard to pull in and my old middle aged hands let me know about it after the ride lol. a wide first and second gear are definitely bad news, i think on enduro bikes the wider spread is meant to be in the higher gears so you can lope along on dirt roads or easy tracks at 80+kmh without sitting on the rev limiter. or i think that's the theory.... but i am just a gumby motocross ape fitted with a Harley pea size brain.
@Wide000
@Wide000 8 жыл бұрын
Welcome to the Harley pea size brain elitist club! May our divine Guru, Donald Trump, be with you. The theory I read about my 5 speed bike is that they lowered the first gear for difficult sections and made the 5 taller for cruising. While the taller fifth is a good idea, the lower first just make the bike impossible to gear properly. I have tried 3 different rear sprockets, 2 different front, and nothing will do... I don't know why they did not ask for my expert opinion on this. In the good ol'days, I experimented this theory at lenght on my Husqvarna CR 250. The second gear was broken and consequently had a gap almost as wide as my EXC between the first and the... next gear. I rode like this for two months in every conciousness state possible, helped with a wide variety of psychoactive substances, castor oil included. In this subjective schizophrenic context, I had to come to the objective conclusion that there is no way such a gap could be as good in reality as it may seems cool in an advertising campaign. This crapy theory just did not pass my foolproof reality test.

Thinking about the CRF250L, which will be better off-road than the heavy F800GS, but still good enough on the road for short trips. Would love a review of this bike if you could get your hands on one. I know it is not a hard-core bike, but for the money it seems like a good middle ground.

We see it a bit here in Oregon too. You can nab an old MXer for around $1K and then throw another grand at it and be piles of money ahead of the high end new models. There are plenty of sacrifices, gearing, E-start, hyd. clutch, 18" rear wheel, but in the end it gets people out in their hobby and saves $6K doing it.

honestly converting a 100 is great. the power is great for the woods right out of the box and all it really needs is a skid plate and handguards and you are set. obviously you could get a bigger rear sprocket as well, but the stock gearing does fine. and overall, converting a kx100 is not expensive at all seeing as though you can ride them in the woods bone stock and they still rip. also, the parts would be much cheaper than a husqvarna.

I remember a promotional video for an outboard manufacturer and they were tying boats together and having "pull-off" competitions between DI 2T and double cc 4T engines and those 2Ts would swamp the 4Ts every time. It wasn't a subtle difference, and all of this from a motor that got better fuel mileage, better throttle response, more power, and was lighter weight than even a 4T twice it's size in cc.

After swapping to a wr250F I was immediately riding better/faster and with more confidence on the first ride than I ever did with the KXF250. Should i just reference the manual and do what it says and set everything on the suspension to "SPORT" mode? wont this stiffen everything up and be better for spped while still being soft enough for the occasional rut, rock, root? has anyone setup the 300 XC-W in the "sport" mode that is referenced in the manual? any negatives or drawbacks to this setup???

Do you think it takes a more experienced rider to handle an MX conversion or is it actually better for beginners since theyre going slower anyway? The low weight is probably a lot less intimidating for a beginner, AND easier to pickup. My thought has always been you can learn shifting/throttle control. But you cant make 260lbs falling over feel any lighter, so why not make it 210lbs (and probably a little lower center of gravity too).
